What are the best makes of pop up tents and which one would you say is the best for a 4 man highly waterproof tent. I do not want anything but a pop up/quick pitch tent, and it's need to be easy to buy online from the uk

Answer
Millets have some good deals on at the moment. Eurohike have a corny name but they are pretty good for the price.
Buy online or in your local shop....link below.
You want highly waterproof pop-up 4-person tent for £70 though.
Ok. I'd like a Mercedes Sl35 but pay for a Ford Fiesta. We can dream.
The waterproofing is still OK though even on budget tents as long as you're not going to the Highlands or the Hebridean islands on a wet blowy day or expecting it to let in absolutely no rain during a four day rainy festival.
I use one to save wear and tear on my good tents for fishing off the rocks and beaches and for local walks in the hills where it can blow pretty bad and chuck it down, but that's close to home.
Nothing too bad if the tent fails. So far it's been OK but I pitch tighly and in as much shelter as I can find on our windswept hills with the tent orientated for the best wind protection.
To get the best performance you need to pitch it tight with no loose bits anywhere. Water runs off tight fabrics instead of collecting in puddles or making little rivers.
If it's got guy lines (some pop-up's don't) then get them well placed and tightened up all round to keep even pressures on the tent in wind. Pop-up's are not made for rough conditions-
If you buy a tunnel tent, as the pop-up's mostly are, you can use a sheet of polythene or a big lightweight groundsheet from B&Q, Aldi, Homebase etc as an extra cover. They have eyelets already fitted and you can use plastic coated washing line for guy lines.
It also gives more wind protection by helping to keep the tent stable in wind and aids the pegs in keeping the tent fixed to the ground if it's pegged out well enough, and it saves wear on the tent.
When you pitch the tent it's best to put a groundsheet down first and pitch the tent over it. Then tuck in the groundsheet all round and water flowing off the tent will stay outside and not soak in under the floor. It also keeps the base of the tent clean and dry and again saves wear and tear.
Like this groundsheet for a small one. It looks like Glencoe but it's in Peru.

It's best to buy some strong pegs. The pegs supplied with budget tents are never much good and for a pop-up tent in a wind you could be saying bye-bye to the tent as happened at Glastonbury this year.

Baby beach tents: Has anyone used one before and do you think it's a good investment?

Double the

Since summer time is coming around and my second child is due in June I was thinking of getting a baby beach tent or some other UV tent for the family when going to the beach. My husband thinks it's ridiculous to buy one but my son and I burn easily (and so does my husband even though he doesn't like to admit it).

Have you used a baby beach tent and do you think it's a good investment? Why or why not?

Answer
I got a really good one from onestepahead.com. It springs up on it's own and the front and back open wide so that it stays well ventilated and doesn't get so hot (you can close them too for napping kids or nursing). It's fairly roomy too. The whole thing folds down and packs into a little bag that is much easier to carry than an umbrella. I think it's a good investment, I use mine at the beach all the time. The kids get changed in it too so we can avoid the restrooms.

I was wondering if it is ok to take a 12 week old baby to the beach?

mikowensmo

My son will be 12 weeks old and i have the opportunity to take my children, one of which is 12 weeks old to the beach. We will be there for one week, private beach, air conditioned condo. I have a UV tent and a few umbrellas. I am worried about the heat and the sand. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer
of course or there will not be any people staying at coastal houses and fishing villages.

Just be wary of too much sun and be careful of hygenie & cleaniness.

What beach do you recommend on Maui for snorkeling?

beach at shelter island
 on Shelter Island
beach at shelter island image

cookie

the ideal setting is easily accessible from the road and not too tough of a hike. looking for something on the north west side of the island, but will travel south. we're also very open to suggestions if there's just something awesome in another area or that might require a little more work to get to. thanks!

Answer
Definitely try snorkeling Molokini. A chartered boat will take you out to the crater. More experienced snorkelers/scuba divers can go on the outer side (current is stronger, sea life is different from the sheltered area so you'll see dolphins and honu on the outer wall).

Big beach (Makena) supposedly has good snorkeling too.. but my brother in law's friend caught a shark there.. so now I feel kinda sketchy about going out too far, haha.

Kapalua (around Ka'anapali, Lahaina area) near Black Rock is a good snorkel spot too. Early morning, and in the winter is when the water has the best visibility. Even if you just go swimming out and about at Ka'anapali around all the hotels you'll see fish in the water not that far out. =)

What is your favorite Hawaiian Island to live at and why?

Nani Girl

Personally, I love Maui. Not only because it is my home, but because it is the right size and has a lot of diverse landscapes. We have the rainforest, volcanoe crater, wetlands, valleys, and mountains, and white sand and black sand beaches. And it only takes 2 &1/2 hours at the most to get to places. I wouldn't say it is too overcrowded yet. And we have just enough tourists for locals to live on a comfortable income.

Answer
I live on all the islands but I do love Maui I only like Hana that is the magic area. I really didnât like the rest of the island well north shore of Maui is alright it was way to humid and dry for me, I live there for like 4 months but the cost of gas prices and groceries wow. I am very lucky and fortunate to live in Oahu now, There is so much to do, Am lucky enough to live on the tropical side of Oahu. And the reason why I like Oahu so much is,
If I feel like city life and the mood to go shopping I go down south. If I feel like dessert side and want to motorcross I go west, if I want tropical and surf I go north. I love pipeline. If I feel like mountainside go east and there is shopping there to. I can go to the movie theater for a $1.00 at restaurant row, I know where are all the best hidden local spots and snorkel spots are and there is a best buy here I have access to any electronic CD or DVD I want. If my car breaks down they have the best bus transportation. There are plenty of jobs here and if I need to get away from the crowds I can always go see any island I want for 20.00 and I get free shelter cuz I have friends all over the islands. When I get bored of the islands I go to California and go to magic mountain and Disneyland. And sometimes to Colorado to snowboard. But every island does have there own beauty. I am going to move away from the islands one day I am planning on moving to Cape Town South Africa.

What are some things to do on summer days?

beach tent go outdoors
on ... outside at approximately 1:00 in the morning of All Hallows to look
beach tent go outdoors image
Q. My friend and I love the outdoors, and we live right outside a small forest. We've explored all of it, and now we're getting a bit bored of the woods. Now when he comes over, he just texts or plays his iPod Touch. What is a list of things we can do over the summer when we have the woods with us?

Answer
1 Hold a Skee-Ball tournament with your pals at the arcade. At 25 cents a pop, the fun 'n' games won't break the bank. The champ gets all the prize tickets!

2 Make a summer scrapbook. Include everything--even the little stuff. The price tag from your fave sundress, amusement park ticket stubs, photo booth pics of you and the crew and vacation postcards are all awesome additions to your book. It'll be a summer you'll never forget.

3 Grow a green thumb! Purchase some packets of flower seeds--cosmo, poppy, sunflower (unsalted, of course!)--and plant them in your own garden patch. Tending to your sprouts will keep you super-busy, and it's oh-so satisfying to watch as your blooms blossom.

4 Rent a tandem bike for a day. It's a bicycle built for-two. Grab a pal, hop on and pedal off for some good laughs: Yeah, it's goofy.... So what?

5 Get a cool deck of cards, and enjoy tons of fun playing Butthead, Blitz and Blackout with your pals. Don't know how? Check out www.pagat.com to learn these and other games--and a few you can play by yourself, too.

6 Do some flower projects. Pluck a few wildflowers from a field, and press them between the pages of a phone book for about two weeks until dry. Then, use them to decorate stationery, picture frames, bookmarks, whatever. Surprise friends and family with your flower creations--just as nice as a bouquet!

7 Head for the nearest gumball machine. Now, get four gumballs for a buck for you and each of your girls, and have a contest to see who blows the biggest bubble.

8 Speaking of bubbles... Hit the kiddie section of the dollar store, and buy a few bottles of soapy bubbles. You're never too old to blow bubbles!

9 Buy some zany sunglasses, and wear them in public. They can be ultra-glam, ultra-goofy, ultra-big, ultra-anything! The trick is to find a pair that really attracts attention. You're guaranteed to have an ultra-hilarious day!

10 Play the claw machine two times for a buck. You knaw--the one in which you try to pluck prizes with a mechanical crane. Yeah, it's usually a waste of money... but it's sooo irresistible!

11 Fly a kite on a windy day. Haven't flown a kite since you were a tot? You're missing out! It's not easy to keep that thing gracefully floating up there--but that's what makes it challenging! Fly your kite on the beach or in an open field, where the wind is often at its strongest mph.

12 Turn into an expert. Pick a topic you're really interested in (like surfing, Linkin Park, Paris, butterflies... whatever) and spend a little time each week researching it online. By the end of the summer, you'll practically be an expert on the subject.

13 Go backyard camping. Call your pals, pitch a tent, grab some sleeping bags, and head out your back door. OK, you'll have to forget about the campfire, but that's no reason to forgo the traditional campfire songs and tales. Have a blast sleeping under the stars-while enjoying the indoor plumbing just steps away!

14 Become a bookworm. Make it a goal to finish off a certain number of books this summer. Pick a genre you've never tried before--biographies, sci-fl, historical fiction--and then stake out a few reading spots. Climb a tree, stretch out on the porch swing, or even curl up on the couch on a rainy day.

15 Decorate your tank top. Start with a solid-color tank, and then go all-out with glitter, beads, crystals, markers, you name it. Personalize your shirt to reflect your unique style. Think of it as a summer souvenir!

16 Have a water fight. Get all your pals together, and designate teams. Then grab your water guns, water balloons, buckets, hoses and whatever else you've got...and ATTACK

17 Catch fireflies in a jar. Make yourself an all-natural lightning-bug strobe-light lantern for the evening. Don't forget to throw in a few blades of grass and poke holes in the lid. Just be sure to let them go after a few hours!

18 Become a volunteer at your local nursing home. Your electric smile and enthusiastic personality will have folks at the local home uplifted in no time. Spending even an hour a week playing board games or just talking with residents whose families can't (or don't) visit makes a big difference in their lives. Oh, and the stories they tell!

19 Start a cool collection. It doesn't matter what you collect--just pick something you like, and go for it! Sea glass, shells and bottle caps are popular summer collectibles. Or be a collector of something totally unique, like ceramic cats, funky bandannas or vintage buttons. To get into the collecting groove, visit a local museum and check out its collections for inspiration.

20 Play tag--in the rain. Why stay indoors just because the sun's not shining? Nothing screams summer like a game of soggy tag. Running around in the rain (um, as long as there's no thunder and lightning!!!) is a great way to cool down.

You could also have a lemonade stand!

Do I need a sleeping bag when camping in Indonesia?

I'm traveling to Indonesia this January and planning on doing some camping. I'm taking my tent with me but do I also need a sleeping bag? I already have one but it would be easier to not carry it around backpacking.
Thanks

Answer
When I've traveled in tropical areas I use a sleep-sheet rather than a sleeping bag. This is like a double sheet (mine is a poly/cotton blend) that is folded ove and stiched across the bottom and halfway up one side, with a pocket at the top to insert a pillow. CampMor's online catalog has about a dozen different models, most under $30

http://www.campmor.com

I also carry a very lightweight polyester fleece sleeping bag of the same design (also available at Campmor for around $20 to $30). This is handy for traveling because you can open it out flat to use as a regular bed blanket or a beach mat, even as a bath towel in a pinch.

Both of these roll up very small. The sleep-sheet is less than the size of a can of soda and I can carry it in my purse or daypack. The fleece blanket/sleeping bag rolls up about the size of a loaf of bread. The sleep-sheet is handy when you sleep in a hotel, too -- I don't trust the cleanliness of the beds in a lot of cheap places so I use the sleep-sheet and my travel blanket on top of the hotel bed so I don't have to contact their bedding.

On hot nights camping I lie on top of the fleece bag with my body inside the sleep-sheet. If I wake up cold in the middle of the night I crawl inside the fleece bag or pull it up over me and I'm fine.

Much easier to carry and to keep clean than a sleeping bag and more versatile in a range of temperature conditions.

Campmor also sells nylon or Goretex bivouac sacks that go over your bag, including some that have light tent poles and mosquito netting over the head area. One of those would be a good idea for traveling in Indonesia if you plan on sleeping outdoors without a tent.

Answer
Since you are from Hyderabad ,you need not go further ..Visit Pappikondalu from Rajmundri .I have seen this wonderfull place on earth by steamer service on Godavari river from Rajmundri .Its one of the rarest cruize journey in India far far better than those lousy ,boring boat cruize in Goa .

We will see many panoramic views of nature while traveling in a boat in the Stream of Godavari River (one of the largest rivers in India, and dominant in South of India), Papikondalu are situated in Eastern Ghats. The river Godavari flows through Papikondalu. This is the place from where Alluri Sitharama Raju has fought the Britishers. He fought Britishers with the help of Koya tribal people and by raiding police stations for weapons.
As the mighty Godavari River races past the hills taking the course that resembles a narrow gorge, it appears to be in hurry. The launch ride from Kunavaram to to Papikondalu- the confluence Point of Shabari River with Godavari where from the river turns brown and turbid- is a pleasant experience. As the launch gets closer to the jungles which cover the river route all along, it would be a visual delight and feast of colors for a naked eye. The jungles are inhabited by colorful tribal people. Papikondalu is believed to be a place where all the sins are cleansed.
During the Boat journey from the width of Godavari in between the two banks will be less than one km thereby getting narrowed up to the nearest minimum at Papikondalu. A kind of sweetest experience that journey goes on in a way in between the two towers will be enjoyed at the spot.
During the journey, one can have the darshan of Lord Yoga Rama at the pilgrimage center Sri Rama giri. A legend about Papi Kondalu is the Lord Rama and goddess sita dwelled here during the vanavasa. People believe that Lord Rama used to be under Yoga Samadhi while he was spending the days in Dandakaranya. The bird âJathayavuâ (A Bird in Ramayana epic) was stated to have fought against Ravana nearer to Sri Ramagiri and fell tired getting its wings broken While Seetha was being taken away. Hence this place was used to be termed as Sokkanapalli at first and later as Rekhapalli.
The Shiva temple, located atop a hill of Perantalapalli, is sacred to the resident tribalâs and one needs to follow their traditions strictly. For an hour or so, we dropped anchor here to discover the gushing waterfalls and lush greenery that surrounded the place. The downstream journey from Parantalapalli was all about refreshing the hours gone by. By taking a both in the water fall (Small water streams) will be cool one, thick rain forest and other flora and fauna adds to scenic beauty of PapiKondalu.
The journey is expected to take about 7 hours along the downward stream. One of the challenges parts of the journey is the negotiation with the drifting sand which makes the path of the boat extremely dynamic. It is the skill and experience of the local sailors that makes the journey look easy while in reality it is very tough. Clean river water with the reflection of lush green hills, gentle breeze flowing across the river, can be your picture perfect setting for sure. Papikondalu range is especially popular due to their co-existence with the river. Except during summer, the river is full of life with people. However, several tribal communities fill the hills with life from ages in search for their livelihood by agriculture, fishing and handicrafts. One of the interesting things that can happen in the journey is a possibility to camp on the river side in tents in Kolluru village.
Staying in the Bamboo Hut Cottages at the bank of river Godavari in Kolluru village is a very fantastic experience. Camp fire on the bank of the river Godavari, Seeing the fishermen fishing in the river in the nights, playing the beach volleyball, Kabaddi in the sand of the river, Fishing, Trekking the Pap hills, spending with the tribal peoples and going deep in to the forest will be mind blowing. Star gazing while sleeping on the banks of the river Godavari will surely bring out poet in you.
Many tribal communities infuse life in the hills, which are their homes and the only source of livelihood by agriculture, fishing and handicraft. The journey to Papikondalu is dotted with temples and scenic points. There are tribal areas around Papikondalu. So many tribes are living in this forest. The tribal sells the handicraft made by bamboo wood will available Munivatam, Perantalapalli. Papikondalu is the one of the finest representative forests of the Eastern Ghats known for the big cats like Tiger, Leopard, wild pigs, deer and the large herbivores is also a treasure trove of the birds.
The Papikondalu are a place apart, we will find acres of green fields, white smooth sand, Green color water in the river, panoramic view of sun raise and sun set, occasional toddy toppers, smiling villagers, beauty and honest tribal. It has become the favorite destination for hundreds of nature lovers. Pilgrims and to

What are some nice beach campgrounds near central Florida?

I would like to go camping this summer in a tent somewhere where there is a beach. I don't want to drive too far though. I live right in the middle of Florida, so somewhere around there.

Answer
My favorite is the Canaveral National Seashore, just south of New Smyrna. To get there, go east on SR 44 to New Smyrna. 44 will turn into A1A at the beachfront - go south on A1A until you get to the park entrance. You will need a permit to hike down past the public part of the beach, and there aren't any facilities (bring your own water, etc.), but it's a great place to go to get away from everything.

What is a Good place to start a family close to Haulover Beach In Florida?

Q. My fiance and i are getting married next year and we are nudists and we want to raise a family as nudists and we want to live by haulover beach but right qround haulover is expensive so i was wondering if anybody knew of any resonabley priced neighborhoods close to Haulover Thanks.

Answer
Anywhere around there is going to be expensive. You might consider taking up residence at Sunsport Gardens naturist resort. It is about 15 miles west of the city of West Palm Beach and about 1:15 north of Haulover. You can try it out by camping there in a decent tent for a month to get used to the place. If you like it you could buy an inexpensive mobile home and have it placed there or buy one from somebody moving out. There are several families living there and they seem to like it, it's a close-knit community. They are big on healthy living and eating.

Upside is that once you enter the gate you never have to wear clothes and there are some younger people there so you won't feel alone.

Downsides are the mosquitos, but that's everywhere in Florida. To get to the store is a 2 mile drive down dirt roads maintained by the county (it's ranch and farm land until the developers make it that far west to pave it over). In the heat of summer you get pretty much daily afternoon thunderstorms blowing through, but they only last 10-20 minutes on average. The rest of the year it's nice and can even get too cool to be nude in winter.

What do you think of this book storyline I came up with?

beach dream shelter
on Victorian style seaside shelter on the cliffs above Southbourne near ...
beach dream shelter image

Sierra

ok so a while ago my friend had a dream with a plot like this.
n a distant future there is some sort of worldwide catastrophy that wipes out most of man kind. in my friends dream it was a zombie apocalypse somehow mixed in with post nuclear war, but it could be anything (if anyone has any ideas for the world wide catastrophy please let me know) all over the world though the people that have survived have gathered into groups or clans. (im still not sure how many people should be in each clan but I think there should be many clans) we are focusing on one clan that is in the pacific northwest around the remains of what used to be either Seattle or Portland. the clan will mostly consist of people 50 and under because the older people couldn't handle nuclear war and weren't strong enough to escape zombies, but there will be some older people. the story starts out with the main characters being two girls who are about 15 years old. one of the girls names is Rose and ones name is Gail. Rose has no biological family left because they where all killed at the beginning of the catastrophy which started (im not sure if it should be 4 or 8) years ago. The closest thing shes had to family since then is her "uncle' mike. he was the person that took her in and also her dads best friend. her dad, 2 siblings and grandparents where all killed from radiation poisoning when she was (11 or 7) and she has lived with her uncle mike ever since. her family was very poor and lived in a trailer park and her grand parents where in a nursing home. she is described as being of average height and weight but muscular. she has blonde/red (more blonde so I guess strawberry blonde) hair that is curly and goes down a 7 inches past her shoulders, her eyes are a blue grey color. her personality has to be strong because shes been through so much but there is also another side to her. a very depressed and suicidal side that she dosent show but is still there. she is also quiet at first but when you get to know her she is very fun to be around and has a good sense or humor her best friend is Gail, and a boyfriend named J. she also has a dog (mastiff) she is very fond of named Bo. Our other character Gail was much more fortionate then Rose. All her family is still living and she comes from a great home, a mom a dad and two older brothers. the family is very rich, so when the war started they where able to afford safety and shelter when the catastrophy happened
while Roses family could not. Gail is tall, about 5'11 she is also very pale and thin. her hair is jet black and her eyes seem to be black to but are just very dark brown, she has a sprinkle or freckles on her nose. The story starts out with the girls and the clan living as they have. a quite but on edge life in the forrest close to the remains of a city. I don't have an exact idea in detail of what I want to happen up until this next part. lots of people die. many people fall ill to some weird deseise that gaurentees death so group of members (the only ones lueft that are not ill or dead0 of the clan decide to go to the mountians instead of living in the city rubble. there more of the clan dies until it is just 5 people left that are not dead or ill. (two of these people being Gail and Rose. the other 3 are boys of around the same age, and they also have Bo the dog. they decide to leave the mountians and go find a safe cabin where one of the boys gramas used to live at the beach. Mike was murdered back when they where living in the city and J fell ill While they where in the mountians. he was not yet dead when they left but close enough to it. when they get the the house they stay for a while something happens in the house. two of the boys where killed right then and there in the house and the others decide to run out of the house. they run for two miles until the remaining boy is killed. next it is just gail and rose they are supposedly the only people left on earth. (earliar in the story it had been confirmed that 90% of all clans where whipped out and all the people of the other clans where ill. later confirming that they are the last people left one earth. they start to cry and sleep through the night up in a tree. they get through the day but at night gail is somehow killed. leaving Rose as the last remaining human on earth. Her depressed and suicidal nature brings here to a cliff on the ocean. she stares of into the sunset and starts to lean over the cliff (trying to commit suicide) but suddenly a hand grabs her from behind and yanks her back. that is where im planning to end the story the rest will be saved for the next book. Please any feedback at all positive or constructive criticism. Also I would like any ideas for
the plot line or characters. I NEED ideas for the catastrophy too. so pretty much any ideas and feedback at all please :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH

AGAIN THANK YOU

What are some main differences between australian and american cultures?

Answer
The difference's are huge, In Australia they make us all here very focused on education and active involvement in sport.

Also we are very career and business minded and all have had further higher education training.

There is very low to no crime or guns and children still play out doors and most people here prefer to be mainly all out doors socializing with there mates. The school curriculum system here is the highest in the world and it's a good place to raise children.

At 18 in Australia your a legal adult and can drink in bars and go to night clubs, vote, buy a house or business etc

People in Australia don't care or are opinionated by religion or politics or what someone on TV said. So you don't ever see religious people accosting people in public places or have people begging for money.

I live in Sydney in the CBD it's a very 24/7 lifestyle here with a very large range of things to see and do, being a world class city and there is no city on Earth like it, with worldwide known restaurants and cafe's, think of any country in the world there is a restaurant or cafe that caters for any countries cuisine.

Americans who come here really get blown away and migrate here like I did. The economy is very strong and the standard of living is very high there is very low unemployment heaps of business opportunity's. The minimum wages here are triple times more than the US minimum wage plus the benefits of paid superannuation, shift penalties and loading plus 10 days paid sick leave and five weeks paid holidays a year.

Women get paid maternity leave also a $5,000 baby bonus if having a child. It doesn't cost a cent to see a doctor or go into hospital or dentist they are free. Just like a 24/7 emergency doctor coming to your home.

We have many more freedoms here than in the United States also anti discrimination laws and same rights for all people and a very good legal system. Police here are friendly and helpful they don't point guns at people.

Australian fashion is world known we do dress up very classy and smart casual ,so you never see cargo pants or polo shirts or tented tee shirts unless they are tourists. Most every well known American actor, actress or singer all comes here to clothes shop as well many other known high profile overseas entertainers. So you see people like Paris Hilton, Ricki Lake, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Dianna Ross, Janet Jackson etc shopping here. They love it here because were no one ever bothers them, most are here now for Australian fashion week.

There are no ghettos or people living in trailer parks here or in low standard housing. There are a lot of weekend getaway's or family holiday resorts. You can go to the beaches or to the mountains, camping, or pack the car to go skiing or jump on a plane for a weekend interstate or to New Zealand. No where is crowded here. People are more laid back and everyone looks healthy, tanned and fit and speaks English.

The only Americanisms here would be fast food outlets like Mc Donald's, Hungry Jacks, Pizza Hut, KFC, Gloria Jeans, but there not really popular as the cafe's also the American shows on TV.

Otherwise you notice the big difference here in culture's as Australians aren't stressed out and don't act or think or ever materialistic brag of our wealth or stereotype people we use our freedoms of speech to improve and make life better in our country. Also we have a very good Prime Minister and Government in our free society.

Most American's don't realize how big Australia is it's just a little bigger than the USA and the state I live in NSW is twice the size the state of Texas and there are just only 20 million people living in all of Australia. There is 303 million people all living on the same land mass in the USA.

For a country with such a small population we have many well world know actors, actress's, music artist, artists, building and clothes designers, doctors, scientists, inventors, sports people as well as known world wide companies and financial businesses.

Should I go to Dubai?

15fsg546rg

I am an American traveling to Sydney, Australia soon. The flight I have is with Etihad Airways, and stops in Abu Dhabi. I was thinking of getting a day or two layover there and checking out Dubai. I would have to take some form of public transportation between the two cities. Is this advisable? What is the mood like over there? Sucks that I have to ask this question, but...

Answer
Hi, I live in Abu Dhabi and I go to Dubai about every other weekend.. although, I haven't yet taken the public transporation but it should be fine. I also know of taxis that run from AD to Dubai too.

There are great places in Abu Dhabi & Dubai to visit, and it's definitely worth a stay, even if it's a short one.

The shopping in the UAE is great, you can shop in one of the very large, beautiful malls or you can shop in a souk for some atmosphere!

Malls in Abu Dhabi:
Marina Mall (I love this mall, it's on the Marina, and there's a huge fountain in the middle of the mall, and people just sit and watch it, haha)
Abu Dhabi Mall (the biggest mall in Abu Dhabi: Marina Mall is second biggest)
Al Wahda Mall (a little smaller, but the shopping is still good)

Malls in Dubai:
Mall of the Emirates (largest mall in all of the UAE, has Ski Dubai, the world's first indoor ski hill)
Ibn Battuta Mall (is split into 6 main courts, beautiful mall)

Then, other than the malls, there are always the souks to visit. Souk is the arabic word for market. There are the gold souks, which are worth a visit, and also the carpet souk & textile souks are great. You can visit the gold souk in Abu Dhabi in Madinet Zayed.

Both Abu Dhabi have impressive hotels:
In Abu Dhabi there is the Emirates Palace, and it is just amazing. The grounds are so beautiful, and there are all these fountains & the inside's walls are made of gold, oh it's just beautiful. And inside there are little cafes for a light lunch, or an all you can eat buffet (which is expensive, & be careful, on friday's the prices double). Also, there is an exhibit inside about upcoming projects for Abu Dhabi.

Then in Dubai, there is the Burj Al Arab, the 7 star hotel. This one is beautiful too, and worth a visit!

Also, both Abu Dhabi & Dubai have beautiful beaches and it's really nice this time of year.

In Dubai there is the Hatta Heritage Village set in an oasis. There is also a Heritage Village in Abu Dhabi.

Both Dubai & Abu Dhabi offer desert safaris, you can take camel rides & go on the dune buggys on the sand dunes. & then there are the tents with shisha ^.~

Also, if you go to Dubai you have to visit Madinet Jumierah, the restaurants are great, and the scenery is lovely.

Abu Dhabi & Dubai have a lot of projects underway, like the Guggenheim, Le Louvre, the underwater hotel, etc. There are lots of places to see in both emirates, and it's a great experience.

Have fun to your visit in the UAE ~

Answer
not everyone reacts to that but when you think about it
when its sunny people are happy, its beach time. go out with your friends, shopping. basically your outdoors.

when its raining your trapped in shelter and you dont feel happy, because theres not much to do, they hate hearing the pitta patta it makes then depressed.

but then some people like the sound of thunder and like seeing the lightning . its totally up to the person.

and also the lighting(sun vitamin D gives you more energy), and the temperature.

I hate going to bed, because that's when I am alone with my horrible thoughts & it's agonizing - What do I do?

There's no distractions like tv, siblings, etc.. It just me and my thoughts of how much a pathetic loser I am and how screwed up my life is. How do I suppress these thoughts and look forward to going to bed?

Answer
Unfortunately, I have to admit my mom is right..being when she said, to take advantage of it, and use it to work for me..that's what she said when I was complaining about things I just dread doing.Mom is right on every count to. Blah. Another thing mom said is, you are what you think and if you aren't but you keep thinking it, soon you really will be what you are calling yourself in your mind. YOU ARE NOT A LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's just very easy to think negative rather than think positive. Life may be messed up, but that is life. Life is about all things, the good, the bad, the ugly, the beautiful, the prize, the win, the loss, the gold star and the demerit. Bedtime has become a dumping ground for you. For some reason its like the pile up of trash busts out the trash bag at bedtime and in your brain you are running around trying to clean, fix, or fast tidy the mess. You need to make some rules about bedtime and practice them until your mind obeys you. Re-do your bedroom so that it is clean, with an updated look to it. Move the furniture around or whatever you can do. Next I want you to not lay on the sheets, or have a top sheet touching your skin. I want only blankets touching your skin. I want you to use soft, fuzzy blankets, one to lay on and one to substitute your top sheet. Sense and touch are extremely important in training the mind. I want you to go through some magazines, old calenders ect..and find pictures of places you like. I enjoy pictures of camping in the outdoors, wild cats and nature. My daughter loves beaches and pictures of castles. Most thrift stores resale magazines. Put your pictures on your bedroom wall, insight so you can see them while you lay down. When you can't go to sleep because the trash is looming at you, look at your collection of pictures and imagine stepping into one of those pictures. What would you do, how would you live. How would you eat and build a story that applies to each picture. It is really important that you get away, take a break from the negative thinking. Unless it is a temporary problem like you are mad because training the dog to use the litter box is going so slow....the problem is still going to be there. Taking a break won't hurt or change the problem. The problem won't get worse nor disappear just because you took a ten minute break, so no worries. The first few times you do this, try to last at least one minute. I want you to find a picture of the woods solely. Instead of telling yourself all the usual, I;m a loser stuff, and especially when these thoughts are really intense, I want you to focus even more on the picture of the woods. I want you to build a fort in the wooded picture because you are going to need some sort of shelter, as you are homeless in this scene, due to agrree-ing to a weekend hike trip and getting lost. You only have a back pack with essentials in it. The group you were with has the trail map, so you are really stuck, and worse, you are at least at 14,000 foot elevation. Better google that, so you know what 14,000 feet feels like. In your back pack you have basics that all smart hikers have, water proof matches, a candle, a lighter, a knife, fishing line with a hook, a flashlight, heat in a can, and your sleeping bag, clothes and various other essentials. You do have some food, but you will need to procure more, somehow. Instead of being lonely, turn that into solitude. People pay top dollar for solitude. Instead of depending on siblings to distract you, turn it into a mind refreshing, mind building experience. Supress nothing, take control, you are the boss here, not a bunch of negative feelings. If your feelings need free reign to come out and play, then they will have to do so in the confines of the rules, which is no hashing and replaying during sleep hours, they must vent during the day when you are rested and better equipped to deal with and focus on them. At bed time, a person is just to tired to fully focus on problems and deal with negative thoughts, which may be why at bed time you are haunted with a pile of crap to deal with....you are tired, don't pay full attention to them, so they keep replaying trying to force out of you your full attention. It ain't working, so it's time to apply something new to the problems. I wish you well my non loser friend.

Hey moms, help make my beach trip easier, please!?

Aggie

Hey moms! Going to the beach this August with my daughter who will be 1 yr old. I'm fretting about the 4 hr ride, the sun, the water, the bugs and of course her eating the sand! Do you have any tips to share on how to make our trip to the beach easier? Thanks in advance!
I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice... all great. I wrote down a bunch of tips, went to walmart, and feel better all ready!

Answer
Take plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and some good beach clothes (light, cotton outfits are good). Pack some swimmer nappies (diapers) if you plan on going in the water.

Some beach toys are a good idea, they don't need to be huge or expensive. A small plastic bucket and spade set, some little plastic cups, a ball ... just simple things she can use to play with in the sand.

A good sized beach towel and some changes of clothing are a must! You won't believe how much sand gets everywhere.

A really good tip I learned is to pack a bottle of talcum powder. Sand sticks to skin and your baby will very likely be coated in it if she's anything like my little boy! Rubbing that sand off can be harsh on delicate baby skin and they wiggle and get upset and cry. This is where talcum powder comes in. For whatever reason, talcum powder particles stick to sand particles. Dust talc on the sandy areas and then gently wipe away, the sand comes away with no rubbing or brushing and - most importantly - no tears. I always have talc in my bag now when we go to the beach.

If you're taking your pushchair then have a sunshade for it to shade it when baby goes to sleep or pack a small play tent (you can get special UV-safe ones) that she can play in or sleep in.

Don't worry about her eating sand, some kids do. My son was eating double handfuls of the stuff on purpose and then accidentally ate more when he face-planted into it. It passes through with no ill effects, I promise. Just take plenty of drinks for her to wash it down lol.

Have a great trip!

please guys help me, I want to bring my girlfriend somewhere that is going to really knock her socks off! I really cant afford to pay to much money, or travel out of Suffolk county, anyone know of a good place?

Answer
Sunset Beach in shelter island is nice and romantic, I also like Ruth's Chris steakhouse, that is if you can get out to Garden City. I know its not Suffolk but its not far and its really good.

what is there to do on shelter island, long island, ny?

stargazeng

I would be taking the ferry..what is there to do there? I hear you can look at houses and that there is a museum and lots of restuarants. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
There is basicly not much to do there. If you are staying the night i would check out the bar at Sunset Beach, it is the only large bar and scene on Shelter Island. There are a few art gallery's and a small musem or two. Othe rtahn that you can rent a bike and go on a bike ride around the island or goto crescent beach which is across the street from the Sunset Beach Resort and hang in the beach, i think they have volley ball nets up too. The best reason to go to Shelter Island is Commander Cody's Ribs and fried chciken,. I have traveled the entire countyr and have not had ribs and fried chciken as good as he makes it . He is crazy and you may need to call ahead to make sure he is cooking but it is worth the 2+hr trip from NYC. there is no good shopping and only 1 or 2 other restaraunts worth going to(vVne St., French very good) hope that helps.

Is there a car camping tent that is thick enough to stay warm in wind and cold weather?

Daniel

I want a tent that doesn't have paper thin walls that has windows you can look out of or have zipped up so that you can stay warm. weight isn't really important. I have a Coleman tent now which is great for beach camping but I took it to around 6,000 feet in Yosemite last summer and we ended up having to go stay in a motel the next night because we were so cold. I don't need a three pound backpacking tent. I know I could just get a really nice sleeping bag or something but I wish they had a tent that you could actually hang out in or fall asleep next to your significant other without being mummified. any advice?

Answer
Tents aren't made to insulate, they're really just meant to keep the rain and wind off. What you need is a warmer sleeping bag. They make ones that will keep you warm in a blizzard on top of a mountain, but don't get one of those because you will be way too hot.

http://www.rei.com/category/4500001_Sleeping+Bags
See on the left where it has categories and near the middle you can choose by temperature ratings? You probably want one in the zone of 15-29 or 30-39.

But if weight is no problem, like if you're car camping, you can just take a few extra blankets. :) A foam sleeping pad also helps, because it will insulate you from the cold ground.

Is there a particular brand/type of camping tent that is more sturdy in high winds?

porkstar3

My wife and I go beach camping a lot during the summer. We have a very nice Coleman tent, but it doesn't handle wind very well. I usually sleep with the side of the tent whacking me in the face most of the night.

Answer
A "mountaineering" tent is designed for high mountains and high winds which works OK in freezing temperatures, but may be a bit too stuffy (and damp) in moderate climes. Mountain Hardware makes a few excellent models: http://www.rei.com/product/732212

Stephenson's Warmlite tents with optional stabilizers can survive in winds up to 160 MPH, according to them. http://www.warmlite.com/tents.htm

Here are some tips for setting up any tent in high winds: http://www.bicycletouring101.com/CampTentHighWinds.htm

Baby beach tents: Has anyone used one before and do you think it's a good investment?

beach tents for family image

What do you need for a family beach outing?

Josie

I have to keep me, kids and dog entertained - Everything and anything to take to the beach will be a help!!! I already have a picnic, bucket and spade and one of those beach tents.

Thanks
:)

Answer
You need:
- sun-tan lotion so you don't get burnt
- toys (e.g. bucket, spades, ball) to keep the kids and dog entertained.
- swimming costumes/ inflatables etc.
- food to eat and lots of water
- towels/ blankets to sit on

please put me as best answer!

What is the weather like in Aussie?

What is the weather like in Australia and New Zealand right now?

Answer
Australia is a large island continent in the southern hemisphere with a diverse range of climate zones. These vary from tropical regions in the north through the arid expanses of the interior to temperate regions in the south.

Seasonal fluctuations can be great with temperatures ranging from above 50 ° Celsius to well below zero. Minimum temperatures are moderated by the lack of mountains and the influence of surrounding oceans.

Australia is relatively arid, with 80% of the land having a rainfall less than 600 millimetres per year and 50% having even less than 300 millimetres.

Most Australians live near the wetter more moderate south eastern coasts primarily in major cities.

Australia is bisected by the tropic of Capricorn; much of Australia is closer to the equator than any part of the USA. Accordingly, the northern Australia enjoys a tropical climate, and southern Australia a temperate one.

The tropical states Queensland and the Northern Territory have highly predictable weather. In ``winter'', typical daily maximums are from 20 to 24 degrees Celsius (68 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit) and rain is rare. The beaches and tropical islands of Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef are perhaps at their most pleasant at this time of year. Further south, the weather is less dependable; in Melbourne in August maximums as low as 13 (56F) degrees are possible, but can reach as high as 23 (72F) degrees.

In summer, the northern states are hotter and wetter, while the southern states are simply hotter, with temperatures up to 41 (105F) in Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne but generally between 25 and 33 - very pleasant indeed.

Snow is rare in the southernmost capitals Melbourne and Hobart, falling less than once every ten years, and in the other capitals it is unknown. However, there are extensive, well-developed ski fields in the Great Dividing Range, a few hours drive from Melbourne and Sydney. Late August marks the peak of the snow season, and the ski resorts are a popular destination; perhaps too popular for some tastes. An alternative skiing destination is New Zealand, which provides skiers with excellent snow and facilities at lower cost.

As for New Zealand, its climate is complex and varies from warm subtropical in the far north to cool temperate climates in the far south, with severe alpine conditions in the mountainous areas.

Mountain chains extending the length of New Zealand provide a barrier for the prevailing westerly winds, dividing the country into dramatically different climate regions. The West Coast of the South Island is the wettest area of New Zealand, whereas the area to the east of the mountains, just over 100 km away, is the driest.

Most areas of New Zealand have between 600 and 1600 mm of rainfall, spread throughout the year with a dry period during the summer. Over the northern and central areas of New Zealand more rainfall falls in winter than in summer, whereas for much of the southern part of New Zealand, winter is the season of least rainfall.

Mean annual temperatures range from 10°C in the south to 16°C in the north of New Zealand. The coldest month is usually July and the warmest month is usually January or February. In New Zealand generally there are relatively small variations between summer and winter temperatures, although inland and to the east of the ranges the variation is greater (up to 14°C). Temperatures also drop about 0.7°C for every 100 m of altitude.

Sunshine hours are relatively high in areas that are sheltered from the west and most of New Zealand would have at least 2000 hours annually. The midday summer solar radiation index (UVI) is often very high in most places and can be extreme in northern New Zealand and in mountainous areas. Autumn and spring UVI values can be high in most areas.

Most snow in New Zealand falls in the mountain areas. Snow rarely falls in the coastal areas of the North Island and west of the South Island, although the east and south of the South Island may experience some snow in winter. Frosts can occur anywhere in New Zealand and usually form on cold nights with clear skies and little wind.

In S4 of Lost, how did the world react when they found out the Oceanic Six were alive even though they...?

Five o'clo

even though they "found" the plane with all passengers and crew.

Remember the episode whhen submerine divers found Oceanic 815 in the sea and the news said that all bodies were there. What did they have to say about 5 (plus baby Aaron) being found alive.

Answer
The 6 said they survived the impact with the water and floated to some unnamed island near Indonesia I think. The world think Kate's Aaron's so that isn't a big deal, Jack's a doctor. It's not a big stretch that the submarine miscounted or couldn't get to the whole plane.

In the Season 4 DVD there's an extra (no impact on the show) called the Oceanic Six: A Conspiracy of Lies, that looks at all the holes in there story. Same actress that talks to Clare at the airport. Some things are way off, like suggesting the 6 were cannibals and ate Boone, Libby and Charlie so that's why they haven't lost any weight.

Here's the conclusion from Lostpedia:
1. Oceanic flight 815 takes off from Sydney to Los Angeles
Six hours into the flight radio problems occur and all contact with flight 815 is lost

2.Five passengers and a possible sixth passenger (pregnant with Aaron) got off the plane a few hours later

3.Since the plane did not crash, it was diverted, landed and passengers were evacuated (the fate of the aircraft and passengers is said to be still unknown)

4.For 108 days, the Oceanic Six had access to shelter, food, grooming supplies and clothes, during which time Aaron was born 2 months later, staged wreckage was discovered by the Christiane I

5. In January 2005 the Oceanic Six paddled ashore on the beaches of Sumba island

The documentary comes to an end by posing the question of who was behind the staging of the wreckage. It says that the operation must have had: huge financial backing and cooperation at the highest levels--either United States federal government, the UN or another "unknown organization with unparalleled reach". The documentary then goes on to mention the recent tragedies of the Oceanic Six (including the death of Nadia) and states that previously the six have been motivated by money and reward, but without that in the equation now, they must be driven by fear, finally questioning "fear of what... or whom?"

I'm planning to buy a bearded dragon, and i want to have the tank set up before i buy the dragon. So, my questions are:
1. How do I obtain a license? (I live in Victoria, Australia)

2. What do I need for it to be healthy? (As in diet, shelter, heat)

3. Are there any special items needed for lizards? (Calcium or something like that)

4. If so, what do i do with them? And how often do I need to use them?

Answer
Necessities

Vivarium
UVA/UVB Lighting
Day Heat Globe
Substrate
Water Bowl
Thermostat
Dragons can live for up to 25 years.
*NOTE â Dragons are social animals and we recommend at least 2 together.

Requirements
You require a licence issued by C.A.L.M. See above for the Category of licence.

Housing
Enclosures should be at least 100cm long and 50cm wide with top ventilation. Dragons are arboreal and require enough height in the enclosure to place branches for climbing. Enclosures must be secure and escape proof.

Substrate
Commercially cleaned and packaged sand is available. Bleached beach sand and red pindan sand are preferred as a base with a range of coloured sand also available including Reptilite calcium sand that can be used on top. Keep sand moist but not wet, this will help prevent shedding problems and compaction from injesting the sand during feeding. Dragons love to dig too! This will also help prevent cave ins.

Humidity and Water
Provide a water bowl with clean water at all times. It should be large enough to bathe in (but shallow for very young dragons). Waterfalls can also be used. Spray your dragons cage furnishings daily in the mornings in the summertime, watch your dragons lick up the droplets, to help prevent dehydration and problems with shedding.

Temperature and Lighting
Place a basking lamp at one end of the enclosure so there is a warm end and a cool end (thermal gradient) allowing the dragons to heat up and cool off, as they require. The hot spot should be approximately 30-35°C. The size of the enclosure will determine the wattage of the heat lamp used.
A definite daylight cycle of lighting should be provided, either manually or automatically using an electrical timer. Use a full spectrum UVA/UVB globe for 8-10 hours during winters and 12-14 hours during summer each day to provide the UV light they require to make vitamin D3 (essential for healthy bone structure).

Food
Dragons eat mostly insects but also some vegetation such as dandelion flowers and some finely chopped fruit and veg ie grated apple, carrot, peas, berries. Adult beardies tend to enjoy their fruit and veg, whereas hatchling and juvenile dragons are mainly insectivorous. Commercial insects are available live such as crickets, woodies and mealworms (mealworms should not be used as a staple as the chitin (skin) is hard for the dragons to digest and may cause compaction) and so are canned insects (canned mealworms are ok). Dusting food with calcium/vitamin powder helps provide full nutritional value. Feed adults every 2 or 3 days and babies daily. Dragons are easily handfed.

You may supplement from the garden, earwigs, any beetles, moths, dragonflys, huntsmen spiders, but be sure that no pesticides or chemicals have been used, if supplementing from garden, worming is essential every 3 months as many insects are hosts for parasites ie Moths.

Before feeding your dragon, lift up cage furnishings and water bowl to reveal any hidden insects, you may not have to add more food. Always leave a piece of fresh carrot in the enclosure for the insects to nibble on, or they will nibble on your dragon or eat faeces left in the enclosure. Clean faeces daily to prevent potential diseases and contaminating food.

Handling
Dragons quickly get used to being handled and may sit on your shoulder or hand happily. However they are quick and can jump. Please donât allow them to wander around a room even if you think itâs safe. They are small and quick and can easily get stuck, hurt, lost or even escape. Wash your hands before and after handling your dragon.

Recommended Extras

Thermometer â to help monitor ideal heat requirements.
Reptihand - hand cleaner that removes bacteria and other contaminants from your skin. Use before handling your pet.
Hide Rock â to sleep and feel secure.
Hide Log â to sleep and feel secure.
Multivitamins & Calcium â mixed in with fresh food or dusted on live food as a dietary supplement.
Worm Rid â in liquid form can be fed to your reptile using a dropper, especially if providing furniture from the bush.
Reptile Essentials Pack â contains cage cleaner, vitamin spray, skin shed spray, tick and mite spray and worming solution.
You should also add branches for climbing ideally arranged to reach the basking lamp.
Accessories
Feeding Bowl, Plastic Plants, Hide Logs, Heat Cave, Heat Rock, Cricket Feeder, Termite Mound, Water Well, Mealworm Bowl, Rock Walls, Rock Ledges, Waterfall, Basking Rock, Little Dripper, Roach Off, Jungle Vines and plastic plants for decoration.

Clean any accessories on a regular basis with bleach and soapy water, leave to dry in the sun and place back in the enclosure, changing the position of accessories will also make it more interesting for your dragons.

Make sure any heavy objects are icebergs in the sand so that your dragon does not become stuck by digging underneath it.

Need a volleyball-proof infant shelter?

DW

My friends host a weekly volleyball game and would like to set their baby next to the court while they play, but they're worried about him getting hit by the ball. So they're looking for a protective shelter they can put near the court.

It has 2 requirements:
1) It must protect the baby from the ball, even if it's hit hard right at him.
2) The baby must be visible to the parents while they're on the court.

This is an indoor game, so the shelter doesn't need UV protection or sand anchors, but if you find something designed for the beach that's OK too. They can adapt or modify it if needed.

Any suggestions?
David: A hard-hit volleyball has a lot of momentum, a plastic sheet wouldn't stop it. It could topple the stroller if it hits at exactly the right/wrong angle.

Answer
Keep the baby in a nearby facility

Ever taken a newborn to the beach?

Juka

I am going to Florida Sunday. I will be there 3 nights and 4 days. I have a 2 1/2 month old as well as other children. I bought a beach tent with spf 50 and earth's best organic all natural chemical free sunscreen for him. Has anyone done this? What was your experience?
I understand people saying "too hot" or "sandy."

So I'm wondering, people who live near the beach, do they move inland when they have newborn's?

It's hot where I live... just as hot as Florida, I live in Georgia.
note: baby is healthy.... and i won't be on beach b/w hours of 11am and 4pm

Answer
JUST TAKE AN UMBRELLA AND HAT, AND LIKE YOU SAID... MAKE SURE BABY IS NOT TOO HOT. YOU MIGHT WANT TO AVOID PUTTING SUNBLOCK ON BABY THOUGH...EVEN IF IT'S ORGANIC, IT MAY BE TOO HARSH FOR NEW SKIN. I'VE DONE IT, NO PROBLEM. YOU ARE RIGHT...JUST THINK OF ALL THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE BABIES IN DESSERT AREAS, THEY DON'T MOVE TO THE TROPICS JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE A BABY! JUST BE CAREFUL, AS IT SOUNDS YOU ARE.

What venomous creatures live in New Zealand?

petepi3

I am thinking of emigrating to New Zealand for many reasons such as how damn beautiful the place is, but I have fount out that New Zealand has the same giant centipede as Australia. I thought New Zealand had no venomous animals? That's the impression you always get when the place is on travel shows.

Answer
New Zealand has no harmful animals like poisonous snakes, scorpions or venomous insects, so its sole poisonous native spider â the rare katipÅ â has almost mythical status. Since the late 19th century there have been accidental introductions of the poisonous redback and white-tailed spiders from Australia.

KatipÅ

MÄori knew of a poisonous spider that lived on or near some of the warmer North Island beaches. They called it the katipÅ, which means ânight-stingerâ. The scientific name is Latrodectus katipo.
Only the adult female katipÅ bites. A fully-grown female is about the size of a garden pea. It is black, with a bright red stripe on its back.
KatipÅ are naturally shy, and would probably only bite if accidentally squashed. Few New Zealanders have ever seen one, let alone been bitten. Despite their reputation, there is no solid evidence that anyone has died from a katipÅ bite in the last 100 years.
A closely related spider, the so-called black katipÅ (Latrodectus atritus), lives in sand dunes further back from the beach, in the northern North Island. Lacking the red stripe, it is a similar but distinct species that is not poisonous.

KatipŠspiders are now classified as a threatened species. It is illegal to collect or deliberately kill them. The decline is probably because of changes in the beach habitat, especially the replacement of native pīngao with marram grass.

Redback spider
In recent years small numbers of the Australian redback spider (Latrodectus hasselti) have been recorded in different parts of New Zealand. Because it prefers dry sheltered places, it is often found in outbuildings. There appear to be only small, localised populations, and because the climate is cooler and damper than that of Australia, it is unlikely to increase greatly.

White-tailed spider
Two species of the Australian white-tailed spider, Lampona cyclindrata and Lampona murina, have been recorded in New Zealand, and appear to have been present for at least 100 years. Both live in cracks and crevices, sometimes on the outside of houses.

The bite of the white-tailed spider is not poisonous to humans. There has been considerable publicity about serious skin infections, called necrotic lesions, that may develop near bites. In a recent Australian study of 130 confirmed white-tailed spider bites, 75% of people said the bite was less painful than a bee sting, and nobody developed lesions.

She'll be 7-8 months and I would like to bring her to the beach with me. Any tips for bringing an infant to the beach? What should I bring to make the trip easier? Other than the obvious things like baby sun screen and a blanket and umbrella? I want her to have a good time and I want to not spend the afternoon feeling frazzled.

Answer
they have them little tents that are mostly screened in that seem pretty convenient to me. the baby can sit in them out of the sun but still see out and feel the sea breeze!

Any thoughts on taking an almost 5-year old to Alaska (Brooks Camp)?

Tina T.

I need a vacation and have always wanted to go to Alaska. After a little research I decided on Brooks Camp in Katmai National Park to observe brown bears. I'm debating on whether my daughter might be too young for this kind of experience (she'll be almost 5 then). I plan on tent camping for at least 4-5 days. I was just curious to see if anyone has had a similar experience or any tips on camping/backpacking/travel with kids. Thanks!

Answer
We went there with our 5-month old, 9 years ago and I have a number of thoughts.

The reservation agent seemed to think we were crazy, as if we were going leave him on the beach by himself. But made the reservation.

The only problem we had was when our luggage didn't arrive on the jet. We continued on from King Salmon to Brook's Camp and borrowed tents and sleeping bags from the park. Everyone in the campground was very helpful to a fmaily with a infant and no gear. Somehow we stretched the 3 diapers we had until out gear arrived the next day.

The campgrounds themselves have spots for tents and 3-sided, roofed shelters over picnic tables for eating. There is a food cache surrounded by an eletric fence (really) for all your food.

There is a snack bar, a cafeteria for lodging guests, piped water, etc in the central area. Trails lead to the bear viewing areas and groups rotate on to and off of the bear viewing platforms. You're with 10-20 other people when you're watching bears and having a baby along is no risk to any one or any critter. Sure, it sounds exciting, but the riskiest part of the trip will be driving to the airport.

Our 9-year old doesn't remember that trip, of course. But he does remember other trips we took when he was 4 and 5. The first family vacation I remember well from my childhood was when I was 5.

Tricks or traveling with kids? Mmy 4 year old has been to 20 states and 6 countries, my 9 year old to 45 and 13, so I've got a few. Airplane time should have new books and new small games along. A favorite stuffed animal and blanket. Overnight flights are really tough unless they are very experienced and easy travellers.

For us, hotels with breakfast on site are so much easier than mobilizing to a restaurant. Pools are a big hit and good way to burn off some energy. Let them make some of the decisions, like where to eat in the airport.

Aim to do things in 2 hour chunks at that age. It will limit what you do, but keep everyone happy. Accept that part of your "Alaskan" vacation will be playgrounds, swimming pools, and even museums, etc that aren't much different than at home. But when your child says, "we live in a beautiful place" at age 6, maybe going to the trouble to show them around is worth it.

Editted to add: Someone posted about guns, guns, guns. There's a lot of that perspective up here. But if you base your decisions on the numbers: Brook's Camp has never had a fatality or serious injury. You can't say the same for black bears in Yosemite, bison in Yellowstone or even elk in Banff.

And while Alaska has more bear attacks than any other state, it is still only one fatality every other year, compared to 43 drunk driving deaths each year. You're at 86 greater risk from drunk drivers than bears. So skip the guns and bring a breath-a-lyzer! And you've got a 5-year-old! We vastly far more kids to guns around the house than all people in all critter interactions.

The rangers are law enforcement. As such, they have sidearms at all times. If there's a possibility of interacting with a bear (one sleeping along the trail, etc), they come "loaded for bear" with shotguns with rifled slugs. Which, unlike you or I, they know how to use.

Oh, and when academics compare survival rates without an agenda? Pepper spray has a better outcome (for the humans and very much for the bears) on average than firearms.

Come up, enjoy the scenery and the wildlife. Be careful but not fearful. If you want to avoid bears on typical trails, make a lot of noise. If you want to see bears behaving naturally and ignoring humans, go to Brooks Camp or McNeil River State Park.
