waterproofing a tent?

Jason M

I got a tent from walmart and have only used it a handful of times well this weekend dew came through the tent pretty bad we did have the rain guard on also. Would scotchguard work or is there anything else u recamend or should i just get a new tent ?
does Camp Dry work good , do i use the hole can at one time or do i need to put it on the tent everytime i go camping or what

Answer
Save the tent. Look for a product called Camp Dry. It's a spray for treating tents, clothing, shoes, etc. Make sure the tent is dry, then spray the outside of the tent and rainfly completely. Spray it outdoors though, the stuff really stinks, until it is dry.

Reviews on tents?

Drew32

I just bought a Quest eagles peak 4 (9x9) dome tent for 59.99 from Dick's sporting goods. They also had a coleman around that was a little bit bigger on sale for 79.99. Has anyone used either tents, and what is your opinion on which one is better? I really appreciate your help. It's my first tent purchase and I dont want to be surprised when I go to \use it. I dont want to ruin a nice weekend camping with a junky tent. Thanks.....Drew
This is for camping @ a campground in RI. Just for the weekend nothing heavy duty. Just for me and my girlfriend to get away from it all!

Answer
First of all a 9x9 is a huge tent for two people that like each other.Go to one of the smaller and better made Eureka tents and rather than have the disposable item you have now you can have tent that will give some service for a while
http://www.eurekatent.com/filterTool.aspx?cID=6
Then there's the guys over at campmor who everybody that does this long enough will eventually do business with
http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=40000000226&storeId=226&categoryId=45760&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=250
Then there's the nice folks over at EMS who I have been doing business witth for the past 35 years or so and have never had a bad thing to say about them Theres one in Cranston RI
Regardless of what you will ultimatley buy , you will need to pitch at least 10 -15 times in your backyard in order to familairize yourself with how it all works
Take the time to have somebody hose it down while you're inside of it and see where and if it leaks and and then either return the tent or solve the problem if it does leak
Good luck

What are the best tent camping sites in Florida?

panthy2000

I'm considering Highlands Hammock and Ocala for tent camping for a group of us for my birthday. Assuming we don't want primitive sites, which site #'s are the best for tent camping (privacy/location) for these parks or others in central or south florida?

Answer
If you REALLY want something nice, you might want to consider Fort DeSoto County Park in southern Pinellas County (Tampa Bay area).

Fort DeSoto's North Beach was named the #1 Beach in the U.S. (Hawaii included) in 2005! It sits on the Gulf, at the mouth of Tampa Bay!

You can go to http://www.fortdesoto.com/servlets/Page/camping for more info and to make reservations.

How reliable is the surf at Bournemouth, United Kingdom?

Q. If I were to go down there on a random day, how likely am I of being able to surf?
I live in North Dorset, where would you recommend that is local, Abe? I must add, i'd describe myself as a beginner, i'm 16 and not a strong swimmer? Many thanks!

Answer
What surf ???? None to be had on that coast, the best places to head if its surf you want would be Cornwall or the Western coast of Ireland. To get any reliable surf in Britain you need a force 4 or more wind The South Western area of Britain is most likely to receive that as between there and America there is only the North Atlantic Rollers. That whole coastline from Lands End up to about Weymouth can get very entertaining in over force 4 conditions.
But it also contains many dangerous waters ie The Portland races where sometimes small sailing craft have been sucked under. If you were to be caught in the Portland races on a surfboard there would be little help as you would not live long enough to receive help.
Do not expect to find Ca quality surf in the U.k. our weather is not reliable enough to maintain such surf, hope you have fun though because if you are careful and do it right theres a lot of fun to be had. Brit surfing counties are Dorset, Devon, & Cornwall,
Somerset you can forget as most of its coastline lays in the sheltered waters of the Bristol Channel. The Water quality in the Bristol channel and its approaches are none too clean either due to several large cities along its banks Bristol & Cardiff etc etc.
South Dorset, Devon, & Cornwall all have cleaner Gulf Stream water.
In Western Ireland North to South you can almost always find good surf Again conditions can get real dangerous real fast so inform folks where you are going and when to expect you back. Hope that helped , and answers your question. See link re dangerous waters
.... Abe.... In Dorset theres Chesil Beach near Weymouth lots of native American artifacts wash up there after a storm, However there you must be very careful of tide changes they are drastic and fast also the beach Is made up of large pebbles so is capable of seriously injuring you as the surf rolls them not a good place to land, til you are a very strong swimmer i'd forget it.
If you intend learning to surf well go to Hale/ Bude or Loo in Cornwall there are plenty of surfers in those areas as they are some of Britains best surfing beaches. Also you will find local surfing clubs all along the Hale Bude area of the coastline. From North Dorset they are easily reachable in car bus or train, In Western Ireland at present you will find it very expensive due to the recession however the coast is dotted with surfing clubs over there particularly around the Galway Bay area. The Bantry area Co Cork is also a haven for Irish surfers meanwhile if you are serious then id Swim swim swim because unlike American coasts Britain is an Island nation we are situated in the middle of the Gulf Stream therefore we have many undertows eddies whirlpools and currents close to our shores( eg the Portland races) in a nutshell we have extremely dangerous waters. Before surfing here you should be therefore a very strong swimmer. Good luck .... Abe

Taking our 2 month old to the beach and need advise?

* <3 Fianc

This friday we're bringing our 2 month old to atlantic city, any tips or recommendations on how to help him to not get burnt? We have a beach tent we're setting up, having a hat on at all times... What else? How old was ur little one when u first brought them to the beach?

Answer
My middle child was 6mos when she first went to the beach, and I think that was the youngest any of my kids were when they went.

Doctors don't recommend much sunblock for babies under 6mos, but they DO recommend using it if the baby has to be in the sun. You might want to get a sunblock stick for his face and hands, and then I would try finding a lightweight pair of pants and long-sleeved shirt or hooded coverup that will provide him some coverage. Sites like One Step Ahead sell beachwear that has SPF built in.

Definitely use a hat, and it may also be a good idea to buy or rent a beach umbrella. It can be positioned near the tent to keep any extra sun out, and can help if you keep him out of the tent for some of the time.

What are good beaches for camping at in CA?

Maxxwell H

I live in CA and I am planning a camping trip to a beach however I would like to be able to actually setup a tent on the sand and maybe even start a fire pit. I would also like to have a good deal of privacy so probably a beach further away from a city. (I don't like the constant foot traffic, freeway noises and children screaming). What are some good beaches for this?
It would be best if it was in southern CA, however anywhere helps.
The fire is not a big deal, mainly the tenting on the sand closer to the shoreline.

Answer
There is plenty of beach camping in SoCal, but most of it is close to roads and other people. In my experience the sound of the ocean will drown out the traffic noises.

I stayed at Thornhill Broome Beach, and you can set up your tent 10 feet from the water.

Where can I buy extra long tent stakes for beach camping?

Glenn Beck

Some friends and I are camping at on the beach this summer. Every guide I've read about beach camping says that we must get extra long stakes because of the sand. I'm having a hard time finding these - does anyone know a good store to buy them at, or what terminology I should use to search for them online?

Thanks!

Answer
You need curved or v section pegs, not the straight rod type unless they are very long ....and then you find a rock buried eight inches down just where you're knocking the peg in. Beaches do that deliberate..
If you can find some pegs with a saw-tooth edge, even better.
You can get thick plastic ones like that or straight-edged, quite cheaply, or wide alloy pegs fairly cheap or stainless steel, even titanium...very expensive for those..
Wide pegs can be shorter than thin ones and then you get still more grip in the sand without having to go very deep.
Another trick is to put heavy rocks over the pegs. Bang or push the pegs right in to the sand so they're flush, and use big hopefully flattish rocks so they don't tip or roll, to put some weight on them. Same on snow. Pile some rocks over the pegs and build a bank of snow along the sides and back of the tent for better stability. Some tents have snow valances for doing that...very handy.
You can also use boulders to tie onto, scooping sand out from the base to get low. Sometimes handy for one peg at least to get a good fix in one corner and use the boulder for shelter or privacy. Put the cord through the peg loop and right round the boulder, then tighten up and tie it off. Put the sand over again and you've got a low fixing without using a peg.
Of course sands vary like soils vary. On the west coast of Denmark we drove a convoy of big Army trucks right along the beach for twenty miles on the hard sand ....as good as a road.
Even cycling on it on holiday later was a dream....not hard going at all..
Normal pegs were fine in it too.
Here are some sand and snow stakes...a lot of companies make similar ones.

What are the different types of tents?

Q. There is something to consider before deciding to buy a tent for there are large variety of tents. Can any experienced one intro. the styles and your favorite style or creative style ones?

Answer
ââDome Tent
The dome tent: These tents owing to their shape are most spacious and can be divided into rooms as well. Can fit a single person or a family as they come in both individual and family sizes. Easy to carry by backpackers, it is very popular in camping. Its shape makes it more heat efficient. The tents have a ârainflyâ which is water proof and helps in keeping the interior dry. So depending on what type of group you have Dome tents have various options. Even the windows come in clear or mesh options. Dividers are available if you need more privacy in the family dome tents. The family tents also have the option of tafetta walls to make it more sturdy. Dome tents are very easy to move if you decide to shift to any other location close by. The most important thing is it is very stable in windy conditions.
ââcabin tent
The cabin tent: Well, if you plan to go car camping and need room to stand then the cabin tent is your best bet. The cabin tents are big enough that you can actually park your car inside it. It is a huge tent that was designed for camping with your car. Some of them stand as tall as 8 ft giving it the room to have a party as well. . These tents are made with heavy material which helps for long durable. These are also exclusively used for hosting backyard parties, or for bigger family groups that go on camping.
ââgeodesic tents
The geodesic tent: These tents were introduced by the Buckminster Fuller. He was an engineer, author, inventor. Mr. Fuller was the one who introduced the geodesic dome in buildings. The geodesic dome is based on âtensegrityâ structures such as tetrahedron, octahedron which are a net of continuous structures that do not touch each other but form closely bound spheres which is just enough to not make them touch each other but also have enough tension in them to make them separate spatially to form a sphere.
The geodesic tents have become popular because of its design as it requires minimum material and provides a large space. This concept is specially useful in tents as there is a central pole which gives it additional strength in high wind conditions as there are no weak points and is easy for one person to set it up. Geodesic tents are heat efficient and spacious like the other tents but their main selling point is the high strength and stability they provide.
ââTunnel tents
Tunnel tents: Tunnel tents or Mutli-hoop tents as they are also called are tents used both in camping, as a kids play area, even as tents for pets. Due to the ring structure in these tents they can give a good height. These are similar to A-frame tents but slightly heavier. A good tunnel tents must be at least 3 lbs in weight including the poles, guy lines and canopy panels This type of camping tent is a large standing free room tent. The tent is waterproof and is very easy to assemble. Another benefit of this tent is it has the capable of shedding heavy snow.
ââFolding tents
Folding tents: Folding tents are also known as popup canopies or instant gazebos are incredibly handy for events, festivals, promotions. Being a lightweight spacious and easy to setup as well as fold up is an ideal choice for moving around and quick set up. These tends usually do not need to be staked down but can sometimes require skylines attached to tress or stakes. Folding tent is easy to move to other places when it needs to be shifted within a short frame of time. It is ideal for hunting or camping.
ââ Umbrella Style tents
Umbrella style tents: They are like umbrella because they have only one supporting pole in the Centre of the tent. They are simple and light, but not the type of tent you want to be in during camping or hunting. Mostly ideal for sitting under on a beach or in the backyard for a party to have shade while you are in the sun.

Any news re Cyclone Yasi and what's happening in Queensland?

Mujer Alta

With all the news re Tunisia and Egypt, the flooding in Queensland, Au has gotten lost. I heard just a little blurb re Cyclone Yasi on the radio news yesterday. And found this little article on the BBC site. It sounds dreadful.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-12322154
The poor people of Queensland. Are evacuations being called for? Etc.

Answer
This is indeed a very large and very destructive cyclone approaching the North Queensland coast. I spent many years in Cairns and Mission Beach and feel very much for the people living in the path of this cyclone. All hospitals and nursing homes in Cairns have had the patients flown out to Brisbane in eleven air force planes. Many low lying suburbs, caravan parks, etc. have also been evacuated with many kind samaritans offering shelter in their own homes. I have a brother and neice staying in Cairns, both unable to leave. I believe some people have been paying exorbitant prices to travel on the last available flights. The cyclone is expected to make the coast 10pm - midnight Wednesday. Flooding and cyclones are very much a way of life in the tropical north and people do tend to band together and help one another out. Cairns has a very efficient network all set up and an organised contingency plan in operation. The best link to find out what is happening with the cyclone is :

I wish everyone well in the path of this cyclone. I know just how scary it can be. Stay strong and help one another through this.

Distance between Sunshine Coast to The Gold Coast, Australia?

Sam

Hi,
Please could anyone tell me th driving distance from The Sunshine Coast to The Gold Coast and what is the closest import docks to these areas. My husband loves his speed boat so are any of the above coastlines any good for boating or are they for just surfing?
I look forward to hearing from you and thank you very much for taking the trouble in answering my questions.

Answer
From Caloundra at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, to Southport at the northern end of the Gold Coast, it's about 170 km by road and would take a good 2 1/2 to 3 hours on most occasions.

The northern end of Pumicestone Passage which is between Bribie Island and the mainland is at Caloundra and the southern end has access to Moreton Bay. North of Caloundra is unsheltered surf beach.

Southport is on the Broadwater which is good for boating and has direct access to Moreton Bay. It is the the outlet of the Nerang River which winds through the Gold Coast keys, . South of the Broadwater is unsheltered surf beach.

That may all be a bit confusing.
Put simply, you can take a boat in sheltered waters from Caloundra at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast to the Southport Broadwater and the Nerang River on the northern end of the Gold Coast. North of Caloundra and south of the Broadwater are unsheltered surf beaches.

I'm not sure what you mean by an 'import dock' but if it means somewhere you can put your boat into the water, there are many access points. If you mean where a boat would arrive from overseas, that would probably be at Fishermans Island which is at the mouth of the Brisbane River (which flows into Moreton Bay).

Where should i go surfing that is near shelter island, San Diego?

Clayton M

I am going to be staying at Shelter island, San Diego and I would like to know where would be a good and close place to surf. Preferably with small to medium sized waves.

Answer
I would take a quick drive to Ocean beach, Mission Beach, or Pacific Beach, or anything north of there. Any of the beaches, instead of the harbor, which is where shelter Island is. The further north you go, the better the neighborhoods get. I would not go to OB or Mission beach at night; too many gangs. They are fun spots and very pretty, but go during the day, as there are too many party kids there. Locals call Pacific beach "PB" Ocean beach "OB" and Imperial beach "IB" etc. But don't go to imperial beach; too far and too close to mexico, so you get the sewer releases in their waters-- too close to home here in the US. Have fun, and good luck.

New Year's in San Diego?

A. Amazin

does anyone know if there are going to be fireworks at any of these beaches;
Corolado
Mission Beach
or any beach in San Diego

Answer
There are fireworks on San Diego Bay. You can view anywhere along the Embarcadero. The beaches only have displays on the 4th of July. Other than Escondido this is the only display I can locate. It is free to the public. Seaport Village is always a nice place to watch from but parking is at a minimum. Shelter Island might be a better bet for parking but you need to leave...like....NOW! Have fun.

Are there any places in San Diego to do at-large tent camping on a beach?

AppleCard!

I am going on a road trip this summer and San Diego is one of my destinations. I'd like to spend a night tent camping on or next to the beach, but not at a campground really, especially since reservations are hard to come by last minute. I'm looking for a place where I can just pick any spot on the beach and set up my tent.

Answer
When I was in high school my buddies and I would camp out at Black's Beach so that we can surf really early the next day. Although, we wouldn't set up any tents, build any bon fires, or drink any beers in hopes that we wouldn't get caught. See... We weren't so sure if this was actually legal to be there overnight. But we did it anyway. Also, please be advised that Black's Beach has a reputation for being a nude beach. Not like that's what my buddies and I did! Heck we just wanted to surf! But, it did give us a tad bit of security in hoping the authorities would turn a blind eye to that beach. Seeing that being nude in public is essentially illegal as well! Anyway, you will need to hike some to get to the beach. I would say find street (public) parking up near Torrey Pines Gliderport and look for the trail down to the beach.

OR just get a reservation at the San Onofre State Beach. I recommend a weekday as your best bet. Then you don't have to worry about nudist, if your car is safe overnight, or the police.

Either way...Have fun.

tent camping in long beach?

chuy

me and a couple of friend are planing on going to San Pedro this weekend and we wanted to camp out at the beach but i cant really find a spot to camp out at . any ideas or a really cheap hotel or motel just to spend the night

Answer
Try Motel 6, the closest camping is down or up the coast, south is Bolsa Chica north is Malibu, however these are booked through summer as are all the other coastal campgrounds from San Francisco south to Mexico. Go to an inland route to state parks and national forests you may still find a few places with weekends open still but they are going fast.

Please suggest me a place(s) to Wild Camp!?

Maribel

First of all im fully aware that wild camping is illegal but me and my mates are up to some adventure soo yh. please suggest me some places that is easy to access, near london and safe enough for us to be noisy at night and please if possible explain to me how to get to the forest where we can actually set the camp and everything =]

Thanks in advance

Answer
Haha Mountain Man...that's a great deal. Both ways....great deal, lots of it.

Are you in a car or by public transport?
Where are you? North London? South? West? East? I'll suggest places your side of London.
Bit short of people on here. Most are the other side of the pond...the big Atlantic.
To get driving directions anywhere you can use Google Maps.
It opens on USA, scroll over to UK, zoom up to required scale , see "Get directions" at top left of the screen
Put home and destination in and in a few seconds it lists all the turns, junctions, distances, average driving time, all the way there. Print it for the journey.
http://maps.google.com/ . . . .
Alternative idea for a party with noise and as quick as driving or buses into deepest Essex is the train to Brighton.
What? Brighton beach gets quite a few all-nighters.....I've slept a few under Brighton pier.
Tents on the beach too. Fires...not too big, but they get fires going. A few cans, bottle of vodka, and the party's on the way.
Sometimes the biggest really basic difference between night and day on Brighton beach is that it gets dark at night. Not for long at this time of year though...about 6 hours. Sometimes people go home when the Sun comes up. Some zonk out where they are or crawl into a tent or a beach shelter to go bye-byes... or,err.....not go bye-byes.
Cheap fare from London. An hour on the train. Ten minute walk to the beach or live a bit of Bohemia in the Lanes first. Or the clubs. Hot, is Brighton.
Student country...Brighton is buzzing with it....anything. *-* . . anything o0_00

Stuff to watch out for while traveling in the following countries?

Declan

We are planning a holiday for the summer of this year, and we, as a family, love nature, and seeing all the wonders the world has to offer through hiking trips and the occasional wildlife spotting tour. However, my 68 year old mum is going on holiday with us this year and she is deathly afraid of any animals. She squirms when she sees a rabbit, and she went into a fit of hysterics when a wild fox walked by us once. Therefore, I was wondering about a few countries we were thinking of traveling to, and how naturally dangerous, flora, fauna, and climate wise these countries are considered to be:

1)Africa (most likely South Africa):
I'm worried about this continent/country more than the others. Of course, I was wondering if there was any need for a vaccination to protect from malaria before we go there. And what is the wild population of animals like, if we decided to do something similar to a back country hike or walk. These are the animals of concern:
Lions
Nile crocodiles
Black mambas and other poisonous snakes
Hippopotamus
Any other potentially dangerous large animals (big cats, rhinoceros, elephants, etc...)

What are the chances of us coming within close proximity to these animals, and how much of a threat could they pose to us?

2) Australia:
Australia is known for its content of deadly flora and fauna. I'm a little less concerned about Australia, because it is much more civilized, but again, any vaccinations needed before we go? The animals of concern here would be:

The inland taipan and any other venomous snakes
deadly sea life (sea snakes, cone snails, and sharks)
Deadly insectivores (please list some)
Potentially dangerous mammals (Kangaroos, etc...)

What are the chances of meeting such creatures and what kind of precautions do we need to take if we meet one?

3) USA:
This country is a slightly more complex issue, because not only does it have a large number of dangerous and venomous animals, like Australia, but it has large amounts of climactic extremes that I am rather uneasy about, it is a substantially large country, and it has a lot of open space with almost no civilization to get lost in. Please list any vaccinations. Can anyone tell me the likelihood of running into things such as tornadoes and hurricanes during late spring/early summer in certain areas of the country? What other natural disasters occur in the United States? If I choose to go some place like Death Valley, Denali, Hawaii Volcanoes, or The Everglades, what are some precautions that need to be taken in terms of dangerous natural situations? In the event of a breakdown in, say, the Southwestern deserts, what precautions should I take? Some animals of concern are:
Large cats (pumas and jaguars)
Venomous snakes and other reptiles (Gila Monsters, Crocodilians, Rattlesnakes, and Coral snakes)
Dangerous insectivores (please list any to watch out for)
Invasive species like Burmese Pythons
Dangerous aquatic wildlife (great whites, cone snails, sea snakes, etc...)
Potentially dangerous large animals (polar and grizzly bears, pronghorn antelope, sharks, etc...)

If we meet such animals, what precautions should we take to avoid them or treat any injuries caused?
I may seem melodramatic to some, but I am just trying to be as cautious as I can should a naturally dangerous situation arise. Any response is greatly appreciated.

Answer
It sounds like Hawai'i would be great for your entire family. It doesn't have poisonous insects or snakes. And the only mammal in the islands are mongooses. The hiking is some of the best in the world (like to waterfalls) and you don't have to worry about severe weather. It can flood in places in the winter, though. There are beaches that are really sheltered from the open ocean where sharks don't go. Have fun!

Most interesting fish choices for at home?

Q. I would like to buy a fish tank and shelter some aquatic life, but I just don't want to watch a couple of fish swim all the time and do nothing but eat.

Do you know any interesting combination of sea creatures to house in a large fish tank and seen the most activity? (like your housing a small chunk of the beach, but instead it lives inside that tank.)

Any answers?
NOTE: Thank you everyone for replying. All your answers are good. =]

Answer
Well if you want "sea" creatures i assume you mean saltwater? then the most interesting thing you can do in my opinion is a reef tank. The limitations are endless but it requires a lot of research and work. You can get some beautiful wrasses, tangs angels ect. There are endless amounts of inverts just be prepared for some effort that needs to be put in on your behalf to maintain such a tank. Otherwise id reccomend sticking with freshwater and still there are many beautiful fish you can do some of my favorites would be the african cichlids and discus fish. A little less work is involved in maintaining that type of tank but still need to do a lot of research and work. Keeping fish isnt easy but if you enjoy doing it than it is very calming and extremely rewarding. Do research and find what type of tank best suits you befor jumping into something and not want to put the time into keeping the fish happy and healthy. If youi have any ideas as far as marine tanks go id be happy to help. when it comes to keeping freshwater id reccomend asking magicman he really knows his stuff as well as a few others on this site. Hope this helps and good luck on your future tank.

can i use any kayak in the surf to drop my fishing line?

sneakerfre

I dont know much about the whole kayak thing... can i use any kayak? are there certain types just for waves? is it better when its smaller or bigger? any help would be nice... thanks

Answer
a sit on top style is the preferred one for fishing. mine has a hatch that l can slip my rod into in case l'm concerned about losing my rod in the surf. which, by the way, l only fish areas in the ocean with as little surf as possible. l use mine mostly in f/w or sheltered beaches. near the malibu pier is nice most of the time as is off of santa barbara county beaches.
mine is a 12 1/2 foot "fish n dive" model by "cobra". has a 600lb capacity. it is wide and a stable fishing platform.
and there are other shorter ones for playing in the surf.

Good tent camping and fishing spots at Florida Keys?

Daniel Jus

I would like to go this friday with my family to Florida Keys, but i want to be at a good campsite close to a good fishing spot where i can go just walking.

Answer
I just returned Thursday from 5 weeks of fishing sw florida. I know, pretty cool right! Although i can't help with spots or campgrounds I can tell you to prepare for spring-like conditions. Big pompano, aggressive spanish mackeral, tons of sheepshead at high tide near structure, the ever present Ladyfish, lunker speckled trout, etc. all from shore.

Pay attention to the wind, you want a s or sw on south facing beaches, or a gentle east for east facing beaches but not enough east wind to compete with baitfish fighting the tides. Water clarity is very important, the clearer the better.

If fishing from shore, load up on 1/2 and 3/4oz metals like Kastmaster, the chinese versions on ebay are good enough but the real deal Kastmasters produce much better. Pink banana jigs with a small white bucktail teaser 12 inches up on a dropper loop for pompano will double you up, sand fleas for sheepshead around pilings and structure, be patient, only fish for sheepshead around high tide.

If your budget allows, the Keys guides know where the fish are holding, expect to limit out on speckled trout and mangrove snappers.

I'm envious, wish I was still there.

Beach camping in Georgia/ Florida/ South Carolina?

Lauren

Hi! My friend and I want to do some beach camping... on the beach. Lots of sights have camping near the beach, but do you know of any places where you can pitch a tent on the beach? I would really appreciate it!

Answer
Camping on beaches can damage natural resources and wildlife nesting areas.

Leave no trace.

1. Key State Park | Long Key

Long Key's campsites are literally right on top of the Atlantic Ocean. This is the only state park where you can leave your campsite, walk 100 feet and catch a permit or bonefish. The park has several nature trails, including one for kayakers that runs through a shallow-water lagoon, and 60 waterfront campsites, each with a picnic table and grill.

Call (305) 664-4815 or go to floridastateparks.org/longkey.

2. Cayo Costa State Park | Boca Grande

Surrounded by water on all sides and only accessible by private boat or public passenger ferry, Cayo Costa boasts splendid isolation. With 9 miles of deserted beach to roam and explore, you won't have to worry about crowds. The warm gulf water is great for swimming, snorkeling, fishing and kayaking. Each tent site can accommodate up to eight people. Showers, toilets and potable water are centrally located. Visitors must bring food and drink, but the extra work is well worth it. This is wild Florida at its best.

Call (941) 964-0375 or go to floridastateparks.org/cayocosta.

3. Fort Clinch State Park | Fernandina Beach

Among Florida's oldest state parks, Fort Clinch has one of the best-preserved 19th century forts in the United States. It never saw any action, but it was occupied by troops during the Civil and Spanish-American wars. Located just north of Fernandina Beach off A1A, this state park has great surf fishing, swimming and a 6-mile trail for hikers and bicyclists. Fort Clinch has two campgrounds, one overlooking the beach and the other in a hardwood hammock overlooking the Amelia River.

Call (904) 277-7274 or go to floridastate parks.org/fortclinch.

4. Grayton Beach State Park | Santa Rosa Beach

Another one of the nation's top beaches, this state park is famous for its sunsets. After you get tired of playing in the emerald-colored water, take off on one of the park's nature trails, which weave through a windswept coastal forest that looks like a set from Lord of the Rings.

Hikers and cyclists have more than 4 miles of trails to explore, and canoeists and kayakers can check out Western Lake, a classic salt marsh. The campground has been called one the finest in Florida, and subsequently, people book 11 months in advance.

Call (850) 231-4210 or go to floridastateparks.org/graytonbeach.

5. Anastasia State Park | St. Augustine

Four miles of unspoiled beach is this state park's top draw. Anastasia hasn't changed much since Spanish explorers made landfall here nearly 500 years ago. Besides great surfing, fishing, canoeing and kayaking, the park has an archaeological site where coquina rock was mined to create the nearby Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, the oldest Spanish fortress in America. Explore the dunes and stunted oak hammocks via the nature trail or paddle Salt Run, a tidal salt marsh, in a canoe or kayak. The well-shaded campground is one of the best in the state system.

Call (904) 461-2033 or go to floridastateparks.org/anastasia.

6. Sebastian Inlet State Park | Melbourne Beach

One of the premier surfing and fishing spots on Florida's East Coast, Sebastian Inlet State Park has 3 miles of beachfront real estate. As expected, the park is popular with anglers and wave riders, but the adjacent Indian River Lagoon is also a great place to canoe or kayak. They call this the Treasure Coast because after big storms, beachcombers still find coins washed ashore from the doomed Spanish Treasure Fleet of 1715. The park's tent campground is within easy walking distance of the beach.

Campsites are $23. Call (321) 984-4852 or go to floridastateparks.org/sebastianinlet.

7. Bahia Honda State Park | Big Pine Key

Henry Flagler's railroad from Miami to Key West put this tropical paradise on the map. Twelve miles south of Marathon, this state park has turquoise water, balmy breezes and an endless supply of sunshine that would make Bahia Honda a great location for a five-star resort. Luckily for us, the land has been preserved for the public's use, giving regular folks an easy access point to the Florida Keys' world-famous coral reefs. The park has two boat ramps and three campgrounds, which are a testament to the park's standing as a vacation destination.

Call (305) 872-2353 or go to floridastateparks.org/bahiahonda.

8. T. H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park | St. Joe

Consistently rated as one of the top beaches in the United States, this Panhandle park has some of the finest white sand in Florida. With access to the Gulf of Mexico and St. Joseph Bay, canoeists and kayakers can spend a day paddling and never run out of new territory. This coastal barrier peninsula is also an international destination for bird watchers. To date, more than 240 species have been sighted. The park has 119 sites in two campgrounds: The Gulf Breeze area is open and can accommodate large vehicles; the Shady Pines area is more shaded and secluded.

Call (850) 227-1327 or go to floridastateparks.org/stjoseph.

9. Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area | Flagler Beach

Named after Florida folk singer Gamble Rogers, this recreation area has access to both the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean, making it a popular spot for boaters, canoeists and kayakers. Sit and watch the shorebirds as they feed on the beach or take a hike along a winding nature trail through a coastal forest of scrub oak and saw palmetto. The 34-site full-service campground overlooks the Atlantic.

Call (386) 517-2086 or go to floridastateparks.org/gamblerogers.

10. Fort De Soto County Park | Tierra Verde

The only county-owned property to make the list, this Pinellas County park has a 238-site, full-service campground that seems to have been created with families in mind. The amenities include picnic tables, grills, fresh water, electricity, washers, dryers, sanitary disposal stations, modern restrooms, showers, play areas and a camp store. The park has more than 7 miles of waterfront recreation, including two fishing piers, nature trails, paved bike trail and a canoe trail.

Call (727) 582-2267 or go to pinellascounty.org/park.

Why do English perenniel gardens do so well in drab weather?

travel6188

I have a north facing backyard. I live at the beach in Southern California. Can't figure out why the perenniel gardens in England are so beautiful but get so little sun and are invariably damp from the rain. I would love an English perenniel garden back yard, but most everything dies. Any thoughts?

Answer
Primarily due to the moist, cool weather we enjoy here in the UK.Suggestions for your north border,
1.Anemone hupehensis.Pink, red and white flowers, grow well in partial shade.
2.Astilbe (Spirea). The arendsii hybrids suit any moist position.
3.Dicentra spectabilis.Requires moisture at roots, shade from strong sunshine.
4.Helleborus.Christmas rose. For a sheltered position in partial shade.
5.Hosta.Useful for north borders.
6.Phlox.Likes rich soil and shade from strong sun.
7.Primula.In variety.Growing as Phlox.
8.Ranunculus.aconitifolius flor-pleno,for a moist shady border.
9.Solidago.golden rod.
Hydrangeas and hardy fuchsia are others which may suit.Good luck, send me some oranges, please!

Im planning to visit "Panormo Crete" in Greece. Is this place good for Windsurfing?

Tzortzis S

As you saw in the title, im planning to visit Panormo Crete in Greece. Im wondering if this place is good for windsurfing, i mean it has air? Is it safe for windsurfing? I would also like to know if there are big waves. Big waves arent good for windsurfing because i like speed. That was my questions, Thanks!!

Answer
Panormo is a village on a small bay just to the east of the sprawling Rethymnon conurbation , the bay faces north and there is generally an on-shore breeze as the cooler air off the sea comes in to replace the hotter air rising over the land .

I am not a windsurfer ( believing you can either go swimming , or you can go sailing , but doing them both at the same time means you get a lousy sail and an uncomfortable swim ) but I would say the location is not the best , as you really want a bigger bay , much more shallow sand beaches to fringe it , and a gentle OFFSHORE wind to keep the wave size down .

Panormo is also a quiet seaside resort for families , so expect paddling family groups and kids swimming in the shallows to be in your way .

Rethymnon just to the west offers a 4 mile long strip of gold sand beach , as does Georgiopoli 20 miles west . Lots more room on those , but still north facing and exposed to wind .

Falasarna on the far west coast faces west , much less busy with tourism , and good long golden sand beach .
Vai on the far east coast the same .
Elafonissi on the southwest tip has a complicated set of shallow sandy lagoons , but a fair few tourists .
Plakias Bay , on the South coast 20 miles due south of Rethymnon has the big beach , sheltered bay and often an offshore breeze .

Nearly all of those places have lots of pics on Google earth , and Vids on You-Tube , you need to do some research .

Compare and Contrast rocky shores and beach habitats.?

Racoonwad

Answer
Exposed or sheltered sandy shores vary by degree of wave action they receive. More wave action moves the sand keeping active. Weak waves leaves the sand settled so it has a stable base. Less wave action allows a wide variety of species but also means less soluble oxygen worked into the water. Sight hunting shore birds like plovers are often found on sandy beaches.

Rocky shores vary from shingle & rocks to solid headlands. Many tide pools allow beach dwellers water at low tide broadening the range of species. Purple sandpipers forage on rocky areas exposed by the tides.

What would the people think about a South African living there?

Answer
It is nice in NZ.
Mostly the country is an emerald green compared to Australia's grey-blue greens and bare reds. The farm lands are seen fairly close to cities and they extend to the next town creating a lovely open feeling to the small country.

The coastlines of the west cost that I have seen are rugged surf strewn wild places that draw surfers by the dozen. Some places do have dangerous rips, but the locals know where to avoid.
The beaches here tend to be more black sand rather than the white I'm used to in Australia. The east coast that I've seen is just as wild, rocky and surf strewn as the west coast, but is the more sheltered of the two.
The northern Bay of Islands is the prettiest as it is very sheltered and more tropical and has the white sand.

There are a lot of deciduous trees planted through out NZ that give lovely Autumn colours of red and gold and the autumn is more noticeable here than in Sydney.

The roads are mostly well made, but they seem to specialize in building roads with so many sharp curves and less of the straight roads, though I found the straight roads in the South Island. I also found a lot of tunnels built for both road and rail. Something almost foreign in Australia!
I have found NZ roads have a lot of driving to the kilometer, compared to Australia's many kilometers to the drive.

The geography is built from volcanic activity and from being on an active plate fold. It makes for interesting landforms in a compact area. You will find active volcanic areas, areas that were obviously formed from previous volcanic activity and impressive alps, rugged terrain, along with undulating plains, large rivers, areas of high rain fall and areas with low rainfall.

As to being out late... I dont know what the cities are like, but the country seems to be tucked in with lights out around 7 to 8pm. I noticed that when driving home last week from Invercargill. (bottom of the South Island)
I was one of few cars on the road at 7pm in Christchurch and the next night, almost had the road to myself from 7 pm to 10pm while driving from Wellington to New Plymouth. Most of the service stations were closed for the night. Lucky I didnt need to refuel!

The people are generally nice, friendly, practical, down to earth and helpful. There are some "not so nice ones" here too, but unless you actively go looking for them, you dont seem to attract them.
If you read the internet news or papers, they seem to concentrate on doom and gloom and the crime, but I have had no problem so far. Like the other two replies have said, locking doors etc is sometimes forgotten!

The weather at the moment, for me, is freezing cold! It is a full 11.0C degrees inside and cooler out.
It has been raining/sleeting here and is snowing on the mountain (Mt Egmont) and snowing on the Southern Alps and snowing on the Northern Platteau of the North Island.

The summer was a mild 27 to 29C degrees that was sunny and pleasant. With Mt Egmont so close, New Plymouth has its own weather generator and winters tend to be wet and cold, Summers warm and dry and Autumn/Spring tend to be cool and increasingly wet going into winter and increasingly dry going into summer. There are 4 definate seasons here.

I like living here.

Answer
Since you are from Hyderabad ,you need not go further ..Visit Pappikondalu from Rajmundri .I have seen this wonderfull place on earth by steamer service on Godavari river from Rajmundri .Its one of the rarest cruize journey in India far far better than those lousy ,boring boat cruize in Goa .

We will see many panoramic views of nature while traveling in a boat in the Stream of Godavari River (one of the largest rivers in India, and dominant in South of India), Papikondalu are situated in Eastern Ghats. The river Godavari flows through Papikondalu. This is the place from where Alluri Sitharama Raju has fought the Britishers. He fought Britishers with the help of Koya tribal people and by raiding police stations for weapons.
As the mighty Godavari River races past the hills taking the course that resembles a narrow gorge, it appears to be in hurry. The launch ride from Kunavaram to to Papikondalu- the confluence Point of Shabari River with Godavari where from the river turns brown and turbid- is a pleasant experience. As the launch gets closer to the jungles which cover the river route all along, it would be a visual delight and feast of colors for a naked eye. The jungles are inhabited by colorful tribal people. Papikondalu is believed to be a place where all the sins are cleansed.
During the Boat journey from the width of Godavari in between the two banks will be less than one km thereby getting narrowed up to the nearest minimum at Papikondalu. A kind of sweetest experience that journey goes on in a way in between the two towers will be enjoyed at the spot.
During the journey, one can have the darshan of Lord Yoga Rama at the pilgrimage center Sri Rama giri. A legend about Papi Kondalu is the Lord Rama and goddess sita dwelled here during the vanavasa. People believe that Lord Rama used to be under Yoga Samadhi while he was spending the days in Dandakaranya. The bird âJathayavuâ (A Bird in Ramayana epic) was stated to have fought against Ravana nearer to Sri Ramagiri and fell tired getting its wings broken While Seetha was being taken away. Hence this place was used to be termed as Sokkanapalli at first and later as Rekhapalli.
The Shiva temple, located atop a hill of Perantalapalli, is sacred to the resident tribalâs and one needs to follow their traditions strictly. For an hour or so, we dropped anchor here to discover the gushing waterfalls and lush greenery that surrounded the place. The downstream journey from Parantalapalli was all about refreshing the hours gone by. By taking a both in the water fall (Small water streams) will be cool one, thick rain forest and other flora and fauna adds to scenic beauty of PapiKondalu.
The journey is expected to take about 7 hours along the downward stream. One of the challenges parts of the journey is the negotiation with the drifting sand which makes the path of the boat extremely dynamic. It is the skill and experience of the local sailors that makes the journey look easy while in reality it is very tough. Clean river water with the reflection of lush green hills, gentle breeze flowing across the river, can be your picture perfect setting for sure. Papikondalu range is especially popular due to their co-existence with the river. Except during summer, the river is full of life with people. However, several tribal communities fill the hills with life from ages in search for their livelihood by agriculture, fishing and handicrafts. One of the interesting things that can happen in the journey is a possibility to camp on the river side in tents in Kolluru village.
Staying in the Bamboo Hut Cottages at the bank of river Godavari in Kolluru village is a very fantastic experience. Camp fire on the bank of the river Godavari, Seeing the fishermen fishing in the river in the nights, playing the beach volleyball, Kabaddi in the sand of the river, Fishing, Trekking the Pap hills, spending with the tribal peoples and going deep in to the forest will be mind blowing. Star gazing while sleeping on the banks of the river Godavari will surely bring out poet in you.
Many tribal communities infuse life in the hills, which are their homes and the only source of livelihood by agriculture, fishing and handicraft. The journey to Papikondalu is dotted with temples and scenic points. There are tribal areas around Papikondalu. So many tribes are living in this forest. The tribal sells the handicraft made by bamboo wood will available Munivatam, Perantalapalli. Papikondalu is the one of the finest representative forests of the Eastern Ghats known for the big cats like Tiger, Leopard, wild pigs, deer and the large herbivores is also a treasure trove of the birds.
The Papikondalu are a place apart, we will find acres of green fields, white smooth sand, Green color water in the river, panoramic view of sun raise and sun set, occasional toddy toppers, smiling villagers, beauty and honest tribal. It has become the favorite destination for hundreds of nature lovers. Pilgrims and to

What's the best beach in CT?

Elise

Tomorrow is supposed be the nicest day and my family and i want to go to the beach and i just wanted to know what some of the best beaches are. Remember the best answer gets 10 points!
~Elise

Answer
One of the best beaches in the area is located in Madison at the Hammonasset Beach State Park. This is the largest beach in Connecticut, and it brings out sun worshippers in droves. The two-mile, white sandy beach is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and surf fishing.

Harvey's Beach in Old Saybrook is a smallish, well insulated beach with fewer visitors. Great for an afternoon picnic or nap, Harvey's is the perfect place to escape the crowds.

Rocky Neck State Park, near Niantic, has an excellent beach as well as a vast salt marsh that shelters a variety of bird life, which can be viewed from different points along the trails that meander through the park.

Ocean Beach in New London has a beautiful crescent shaped beach and offers some of the best swimming in the region. The beach is flanked by a boardwalk, which offers excellent jogging or strolling opportunities.

It depends on what you like.

Going to the beach this summer, and need a "shelter" for shade?

johnjanetl

I have looked online at many umbrellas, but they only seem to shade two adults at the most, plus you have to buy an anchor...this leads you close to, or even over a hundred dollars for a quality umbrella. I have looked at many canopies also that are well over $100 plus, and some with bad reviews.

I found two options that may work, but there is a huge price difference, and no reviews at all whatsoever to help in choosing.

Option one:
http://www.target.com/CoolHut-Shelter-Seats-Blue-Gold/dp/B001LEC4FI/sr=1-18/qid=1236046385/ref=sr_1_18/175-4751631-1361609?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=0&pricerange=&index=target&field-browse=1038576&rh=k%3Acabana&page=3

Option two:
http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/11478.htm

Which would you choose and take a chance on without any feedback before purchasing? Or do you have another shelter option or idea that is cheaper?

Answer
You may want to check to see if the beach you are visiting allows anything larger than an umbrella? At Daytona Beach, you can rent umbrellas so you don't need to buy one or install it, they do it for you. Visit tripadvisor.com a free site that has info for any area you may plan to visit from people who have first hand experience there. Have fun.

My mom kept on nagging me about buying clothes.
i want to get rid my the old clothes that doesn't fit me anymore. i wanna sell them but not online. is there any stores that buy old clothes in Huntington Beach??
pls help me i'm tired of the NAGGING!!!

Answer
Here are some good solutions to earn extra money.

1. If they are in good shape you can sell them over EBay!

2. Second hand thrift stores will buy them.

3. Have a garage sale.

4. Sell to a friend that does flea markets or sells used clothing.

5. Sell to your friends.

Here are some good solutions that will not earn you money.

1. Give to a friend or relative.

2. Give to a charitable thrift store.

3. Give to a church.

4. Give to a homeless shelter.

I hope this helps, but whatever you do. Please do not throw them away even if they are not in the best of shape!! There are already too many nice or still wearable clothes rotting in landfills. :)

If you cannot find anyone to take them then drop me an email and I may be able to help. We are always looking for used clothes or sneakers for our family. If they fit us we may buy them off of you. If they do not fit us, then maybe we can find somebody who will take them.

Im 16 and I want a busy schedule! I'm always bored. Help!?

Getting a job is best.
You can also find some places to volunteer. Its really good for college too. I volunteered at the animal shelter one year.
You can go through your garage and sell things on ebay.
Learn how to play an instrument or draw or something artsy.
Babysit or paint a room
Be a dog walker
Learn to cook
Hang out with friends. Go to arcades, parks, beach...
If you're into sports join a summer team or practice
...really the best thing to do is get a job, I dont know what else to tell ya. But you're sixteen and old enough. Try working a store you go to and like :)
If you cant find a job, I really incourage you to volunteer. It doesnt sound like a whole lot of fun but there are so many different types. One of my favorites was I helped out with a special needs camp.

where is boracay?

George III

Answer
Voted the world's best beach by the Sun Herald, Australia and Harper's, Boracay is the perfect island getaway, with its warm blue waters, powder-fine white sand, and a palm fringed 4-kilometer beach.

The islands facilities and amenities make her a recreational haven. Watch February's Fun-board Cup, windsurfing's annual international event, or the World Beach Volleyball Tournament in September. Or take a refreshing swim in the crystal clear waters.

The world-famous island of Boracay is located in Aklan province 345 kms. South of Manila. The island is accessible by air from Manila or Cebu through two principal gateways : Caticlan airport or Kalibo airport.

After a swim in the sea, you can engage in relaxing activities. Comb the beaches on horseback. Play an exciting game of volleyball. Get on an outrigger and sail to the other side of the island. Swim over to the floating bar and cool off with a cocktail. Or hop around one beach to another and enjoy the easy-going atmosphere.

After sunset, the island transforms into one exciting night of dancing and partying. But don't take our word for it, Boracay is an island you have to experience yourself.

For many certified sun-worshippers the world over, paradise goes by the name Boracay. For indeed, many visitors have come back to Boracay year after ytear. Some have even chosen to live in this paradise island.

Sheltered from the fierce easterly typhoons, Boracay can be found at the northwestern tip of Panay, in the western Visayas region, off the Sibuyan Sea. Boracay has managed to pack its thousand-hectare area with all the elements of a tropical paradise--crystal blue waters, powder white sand, liberal doses of tropical palms and flowering plants, and a healthy marine life underneath the seas.

Boracay is made up of three little communities: Yapak in the north, Balabag in the middle, and Manoc-manoc in the south. Hilly elevations up to 100 meters above sea level characterize Yapak and Manoc-manoc. Intertwining trails link the small villages together but may sometimes lead to lush tropical jungles. Electricity and public transportation remain relatively scarce.

Boracay would have remained a national secret if not for a few foreign travellers who accidentally stumbled upon the place. Some say it was a movie crew which spread word about Boracay to other sun-worshippers. Other swear it was German traveler Jens Peters' book, which included rare reviews about Boracay, that sent tourists on their way. Whichever tale is true, Boracay has become a melting pot for beach lovers. At any point in the island, visitors can hear English, German and French spoken fluently. More importantly, visitors respect the serene quality of the place, and pay tribute to native Boracaynons by behaving according to local behavioral codes-which means no nudity, no fighting, and no loud commotions.

Not surprisingly, the culinary fare at Boracay is as diverse as the nationalities of its visitors. French, Australian, Belgian, German, Spanish and Thai--they're all here side by side the native cuisine. Lending ample support to this virtual rainbow of fruit shakes: from sweet yellow mango, green tart mango, to pineapple, coconut milk, cantaloupe and banana. Don't go home without a sip.

Has the ban on smoking in pubs changed peoples attitudes towards smokers?

Nicholas 1

I wasnât 18 when smokings was banned in bars and pubs e.t.c, and have no memory of people smoking indoors. But I came across this article (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest/contributers/article1913299.ece ) recently. To quote âIn 15 months the smoking ban has tilted society completely the other way. Where once there was an acceptance of fug, there is intolerance of anything but clean air â¦. So clean is the air now, that being exposed to the smell of cigarettes is a physical shock. I do not exaggerate ⦠without protest these [smoking] shelters have subsequently been banned at all hospitals. Councils have stopped staff smoking outside offices, depots and schoolsâ. Another source quotes cancer council NSW (Australia) tobacco control manager Wendy Oakes saying âwhen I first started working on smoke-free pubs ⦠people use to say âoh, the smokers need somewhere to goâ but now they say âcanât you stop them smoking outside as well because thatâs where I want to sitââ

In Australia and New Zealand, smoking is now banned everywhere inddors (bar your own home) and in some beaches and parks, and outside the entrances to some buildings, and there are calls to ban it in outdoor dining and drinking areas.

Do you agree with the above saying the ban has changed the social acceptability of, and public attitudes towards smoking?

Answer
Yes and it drives me crazy!

As a smoker I was obviously a bit put out having to go outside in the cold to have a fag. However I also understand that it's not nice to go home from a night out stinking of stale smoke.
At work we used to have a smoking room which was attached to the main break room but was closed off from everyone else. If anyone who didn't smoke came to sit in there, that was their choice.
Now we have a shelter outside and the same people who came to sit in the room are now complaining that they have to walk past us and it smells. It takes about 3 seconds to walk past!
These people complain that they have to breathe in our smoke and yet in the summer they're all dying to come and sit in the shelter to get some sun.

I understand the ban, I don't want people smoking in a restaurant whilst I'm eating. But if smokers get a separate enclosed room then I don't see that it matters. There should be a choice.

And the way some people have changed their attitude towards smokers is that they have simply become more hypocritical as far as I'm concerned.

I understand the dangers of smoking but it's my choice. As long as smoking is legal there needs to be somewhere for smokers to be. We pay our taxes like everyone else and the tax on cigs is massive so we contribute a lot. What would happen if we all quit? People would complain that they had to pay more tax on other stuff.

We have pubs for people to drink in and I'll bet that more people get hurt in drunken fights than by passive smoking in a night. There is no limit on the amount of drinks you can have in this country and every night people are taken to hospital for binging. Where's the health ban for that?

*Edit* After reading one of the other answers I wanted to add that smoking around children is completely unforgivable. I always try to be considerate of others and if I'm waiting for a bus or something and someone stands near me with a child I will put my cigarette out. When I see parents smoking over pushchairs or women smoking whilst pregnant it disgusts me.
Children have no choice in that situation and smoking is all about choice.

Bad animal shelters in Palm Beach Florida?

Kathy

I am an absolute animal lover. I want to help save animals that need me but I need some information.
My family and I are hoping to be able to go to animal shelters that mistreat the animals and adopt the ones that are going to be euthanized. I am 17 but I would do most of the work for the animals which is fine with me because I love them so much and because I do school online so I am home all day. I was wondering if I would be allowed to save the animals from being euthanized and then have people adopt them from me. I am not sure how this works so I am doing research before we start doing anything. We hope to move in the next few months and hope to buy a home that has a lot of land for the dogs to run around and a house big enough for the cats to roam comfortably.
We are not rich by any means but I am willing to ask for donations and get a job to help the animals. Do we need to become a non-profit animal shelter legally or can we just save the animals and then have people get them from us?
I also need to know of bad animal shelters in Palm Beach County Florida or near there that I can save the animals from because I know that those animals are going to be the ones that need me the most.

Once I get the animals, if I am allowed to have people adopt them from me, we have a family friend who knows everyone in the city and would help us get loving families to adopt them from us.

One last question: Do you know of any ideas of where I could ask for donations? Can I just ask anywhere and in front of any store or do I need to ask the manager first?

I know that this is a long question but if you guys could help me out with this information I would very much appreciate it and the animals that I save would appreciate it also.

Please help because I am doing research but it is hard to find the info that I need.
Thank you so much for answering the question!
P.S. We would save cats and dogs.

Answer
Wow! You soud like such an amazing inspirational person! The fact that you want to help all these animals in need is brilliant. It's great that you have your parents support in this project as well.

I'm not sure about the legal side of things, but advertizing-wise you could set up a business page on Facebook. Since so many people are on that, you're sure to find some interest. Out of courtesy I would ask the manager of any shop if you could maybe pin up some flyers on a noticeboard or something in the shop. Try setting up a website or blog to talk about your intentions and goals to save the animals and try to get support this way. Once you have it all set up, you could even document the animals progress and stuff, with pictures of who has been adopted and who is in need of adoption. This is a great way to interact with your supporters should this become a major thing.

Posting flyers through people doors, sticking them wherever yu can, parks, on trees haha. ANYWHERE! Also, maybe you could do some fundraising events to raise money and awareness of your project, like parties, cake sales, see if you coud set up a stand in a supermarket or shopping centre or something.

Don't forget though, these animals are going to take up a lot of time, energy and money!!! Think of all the foods, toys, vet bills should anyything happens to an unadopted one, etc. I know you have probably thought of all this, but I feel I've gotta say it haha.

Anyway, all the best!!! I hope I have been some help and really hope this all works out for you! It sounds amaaaazinggg!!!!

I'm 19 and homeless in Florida, what should I do?

Exavion

I'm on a library computer at the moment, in Cape Canaveral. My names Paul, I'm a short, fit white male and I've been homeless for what is it now, 23 days? I must say one thing, it's not what I'd call dull. I'm hungry now, almost no money left, my hair feels like a damned rug because I haven't been able to shower for weeks...

Ugh, I don't want to complain. This is just a lot to take in. I've been trying to find a job, as I'm a dual citizen (from Montreal originally), It seems near impossible. I'm serious. I've checked craigslist and some other local online classifieds, nothing. I've been to every restaurant/condo complex/hotel/laundry/surf/ and any other local business and they all aren't hiring.

At best, they tell me to fill out an application. But I have no phone or address. My feet are killing me. I've walked so much in the past month it's unbelievable.

I'm just... lost here. Really, what do I do?

Answer
Well, there's not one homeless shelter I can find in Cape Canaveral, but the nearest one I could find is in Vero Beach, if you can get yourself down there, maybe by hitchhiking?

Also, if you go to the back door of smaller local mom & pop restaurants and, instead of applying for a job, just tell them you're hungry and would be grateful for some leftovers, most folks will make up a little plate for you, so don't underestimate the kindness of strangers and just go ask for some help, OK?

Good luck, and the link below is to a webpage about the Vero Beach Shelter and a directory of all Homeless Shelters in the entire state of Florida, so maybe there's one closer than Vero Beach...

Bringing baby to the beach for the first time.?

TSM

She'll be 7-8 months and I would like to bring her to the beach with me. Any tips for bringing an infant to the beach? What should I bring to make the trip easier? Other than the obvious things like baby sun screen and a blanket and umbrella? I want her to have a good time and I want to not spend the afternoon feeling frazzled.

Answer
they have them little tents that are mostly screened in that seem pretty convenient to me. the baby can sit in them out of the sun but still see out and feel the sea breeze!

Hey moms, help make my beach trip easier, please!?

Aggie

Hey moms! Going to the beach this August with my daughter who will be 1 yr old. I'm fretting about the 4 hr ride, the sun, the water, the bugs and of course her eating the sand! Do you have any tips to share on how to make our trip to the beach easier? Thanks in advance!
I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice... all great. I wrote down a bunch of tips, went to walmart, and feel better all ready!

Answer
Take plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and some good beach clothes (light, cotton outfits are good). Pack some swimmer nappies (diapers) if you plan on going in the water.

Some beach toys are a good idea, they don't need to be huge or expensive. A small plastic bucket and spade set, some little plastic cups, a ball ... just simple things she can use to play with in the sand.

A good sized beach towel and some changes of clothing are a must! You won't believe how much sand gets everywhere.

A really good tip I learned is to pack a bottle of talcum powder. Sand sticks to skin and your baby will very likely be coated in it if she's anything like my little boy! Rubbing that sand off can be harsh on delicate baby skin and they wiggle and get upset and cry. This is where talcum powder comes in. For whatever reason, talcum powder particles stick to sand particles. Dust talc on the sandy areas and then gently wipe away, the sand comes away with no rubbing or brushing and - most importantly - no tears. I always have talc in my bag now when we go to the beach.

If you're taking your pushchair then have a sunshade for it to shade it when baby goes to sleep or pack a small play tent (you can get special UV-safe ones) that she can play in or sleep in.

Don't worry about her eating sand, some kids do. My son was eating double handfuls of the stuff on purpose and then accidentally ate more when he face-planted into it. It passes through with no ill effects, I promise. Just take plenty of drinks for her to wash it down lol.

Have a great trip!

Can I use a pop up tent on Waikiki beach?

Ai_22192

The size of tent is good for 2 adults, basically use only for sun shelter and not the zip up camping kind of tent.
For those who wonder why I ask such a question, it is because we used a pop up tent on Virginia beach only to be told that it is prohibited and have to take are tent down immediately.

Answer
Yeah, no tent allowed at Waikiki, cause block eva body view, and can't stay onna beach ova nite, ok? But you can bring umbrella, or can rent from Beach Boy rental or Star rental rite on Waikiki or Kuhio Beach, they rite close to each otha, so same beach really, ok? Also, lotta good shade from Palm trees, so maybe not even need umbrella, ok?
Peace and aloha to you!

What is the most wind resistant tent you can get for beach camping?

porkstar3

My wife and I are camping on the beach at Galveston Island State Park this spring/summer. We currently have a Coleman dome tent, but it tends to really bend and flex in the wind. We're looking for something a little more sturdy. We usually keep most of our gear and stuff outside the tent under a gazebo shelter, so storage, gear lofts, vestibules, etc. are not that big of an issue. We want to make this a longer stay than normal. A more sturdy tent that doesn't cave in and use up all the interior space will make all the difference.

We'd like plenty of room if possible. My wife and I are both....uh...."full figured" so the person capacity needs to be a bit "negotiable.".

Answer
You will need to spend a little more to get a stronger tent. You can stay with a Coleman but at the price range several other tent makers are better priced for a rigid tent. I like the Coleman Heka x tent for a rigid tent design and yet still affordable, their next level tent the helios x3 is an expedition class with expedition price to go with it.

Getting away from Coleman to REI brands they have a strong Multi season called the Mountain 2 with high ratings that is cheaper in price then the Coleman Helios.

Anyway the key to having your tent hold up in the wind is having it set properly to the wind, the low end facing the predominate wind direction and having some kind of wind break. a picnic table, tree, your car, a large pile of drift wood, whatever you can find.

Good luck!
