Tent Camping on the Beach?

Q. Has anyone ever camped on the beach?
I am considering taking the kids up to Lake Erie to camp on the beach there.
I don't have a "special" beach tent. I want to use my smaller nylon dome tent.
Will I have trouble with this?

Answer
Do not need any "special tent". We are using a 2 man pop up camping tent(link below) and it work well for beach camping.Wind can and will be a problem. We actuall had one of those canopies get away from us in some high winds at the beach , but that was just a daytime setup. I imagine the wind gets pretty rough there, unless you can get back and out of it somehow. if there{s a lot of night wind the tarps can get pretty noisy. Try to find a sheltered are if there is any. But beach camping is great fun and pretty comfortable. You might need to empty the tent and shake out excess sand every day or two though. Night time may not be so bad though.

Answer
These kinds of items like in the picture, including anything with a cartoon character on it, are more of a toy than a serious piece of camping gear. They probably are not weatherproof for one, and I bet they aren't very durable.

But you can get "real" tents that are kid sized for different amounts of money. Here is a youth tent from TexSport

http://www.amazon.com/Texsport-Brookwood-Youth-Dome-Tent/dp/B001C0GWUE/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1269683114&sr=1-14

You can also get an authentic bivy shelter or a backpacker's or bicycler's tent. These are all small, lightweight, and minimalist design so they are easy to carry. They are used by adults with almost no room to spare, but for a child, they would still be pretty cozy, and they are meant for real camping. Note that the term bivy is used to describe both a sleeping bag cover, which you don't really want for this, and a narrow tent. Here is a search result page for those.

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dsporting&field-keywords=bivy&x=0&y=0

You also may have some luck with a beach type shelter, including some pop up cabana type things which tend to have a small footprint, since they are used by people in a sitting position. These are meant for real use, but not necessarily camping. Many are meant for shade, but may not be waterproof or durable enough for any sort of campsite other than sand.

Just make sure whatever you get is meant for real use as a camping piece, that is has all the right working parts just like a grownup's, and is meant to be used outdoors instead of being set up in the playroom, etc.

EDIT: Your 13 year old will not fit in any play tent I have ever seen unless she is super small. Even if she did, she is bound to hit a growth spurt any day now. Go with a backpacking tent or a bivy shelter! It will be plenty cozy...this is past the age of toy tents in my opinion. If she is showing interest in camping, get her some real gear and teach her how to do it right!

How do I keep baby out of the sun at the beach?

Now that the baby summer stuff is going up for sale on ebay and local sales, I started thinking about the coming up summer (sigh). My baby is 4 months right now, and I've purchased a rash gaurd and baby sunscreen already, but I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of any great products that can help me keep the direct sun and bugs off of him when we go to thebeach this summer (we go alot, and I'm looking forward to getting outside with the baby) Or if you have any hints on bringing a baby to the beach, I'd appreciate them. I've seen little domed screen things that you can zip the baby in, they're kind of like a small play pen, but I think mine will be too big by the summer time.

I know I could get an umbrella, but that's not really doable in my area, they don't allow them on most beaches, and the shaded spots always fill up right away. I'm just thinking about all the new hazards (sand in eyes, sunburn, other kids, ahhhh can't wait)

I appreciate any advice from other parents, I will do a best answer as long as no one says "bring an umbrella" JK

Answer
Can you get a popup shelter? This may sound silly, but they have them for pets. It folds flat but then pops up into a cube. It might take some fiddling but you could cut the fabric on the sides so you can get to him but keep the top intact for shade. They're nylon so they're pretty sand and moisture proof.
Just found one for babies, here's the link to one on eBay so you can see it. http://cgi.ebay.com/Sun-Smarties-Infant-Beach-Cabana-Tent-GREAT-CONDITION_W0QQitemZ120378916326QQihZ002QQcategoryZ117033QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
What do they allow on your beaches? Could you use two chairs and drape a beach towel between them as long as his fingers didn't get pinched.
The only other thing I'd suggest is make sure he keeps a hat on to shade his eyes.
Hope your little guy has fun.

i need to convince my mom about going camping.?

Shane F

I am 14 and live in the suburbs of chicago with my 17 year old girly sister and mom. i LOVE the outdoors and i havent gone camping in about 4 years. and when i did go it wasnt actually like camping by making shelters and stuff. it was like tents, and premade food, and there was other civilization around. I want to hike the appalachian trail or camp in Yosemite national par. my mom popped the question the other day, " so where do you want to go for vacation this summer"? i said alaska or camping in the two places i said earlier. my sister said florida( which we just went to last year, and the year before that new york). my mom said alaska was to expensive so i said how about the other two places but she never answered me. but she kept on talking about beaches, and cities, and those kinda places. i would 150% love camping, hiking or climbimg more. but living in a house full of two girls is hard to let me live my life the way i want. she just wont consider it very much because both of them dont want to. but what about me?!?

Answer
How about exploring camping without your Mom and sister since they don't seem interested in that type of activity. I have mentored 14-18 year old boys and girls through the Boy Scouts Venture Crew. This is like scouting on steroids. We taught the youth rock climbing, rappelling, white water canoeing , backpacking, orienteering and so much more. This is REAL camping. Venture Crews are available all over the country. I have listed one website below. Contact them and find out about venturing. If this particular crew isn't near your home, contact your local Boy Scouts of America (in the phone book) and find out where the closest one to you is. Be prepared to learn a lot about yourself and the outdoors. Have a great time!

Can I use a pop up tent on Waikiki beach?

The size of tent is good for 2 adults, basically use only for sun shelter and not the zip up camping kind of tent.
For those who wonder why I ask such a question, it is because we used a pop up tent on Virginia beach only to be told that it is prohibited and have to take are tent down immediately.

Answer
Yeah, no tent allowed at Waikiki, cause block eva body view, and can't stay onna beach ova nite, ok? But you can bring umbrella, or can rent from Beach Boy rental or Star rental rite on Waikiki or Kuhio Beach, they rite close to each otha, so same beach really, ok? Also, lotta good shade from Palm trees, so maybe not even need umbrella, ok?
Peace and aloha to you!
