I wanna go to a nice camping spot with a bunch of friends to Virginia, but I cant seem to find one, I want a place thats not too expensive, but has electricity and bathrooms. I also want a place with swimming, fishing, and maybe some trails nearby. Also an amazing view. There's a girl I really like coming and I want it to be romantic. Finally I want the sites to be pretty big, but also a descent distance away from other sites. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know

Answer
ok, well if you go to virginia beach area, I would suggest First Landing State Park. Last time i checked, it was a non-site specific so you might have to be a bit lucky about which site you get. As long as you don't go for a tent area only, you should be ok (the ones w/o electricity are really close and open). the campsites are a mix from forest to sand dunes, some partially overlooking the ocean.

The beach is really nice, no lifeguards but seemed safe when we went. There are also a few miles of hiking trails through forests and along pathways/boardwalks through cypress swamps, with some really nice photos if you look online. we wanted to do this, but ran out of time with all the other things (fishing from the beach, from a nearby pier, and from a place near a bridge over an inlet, lynnhaven inlet).

here is a photo i took of one of the boardwalks(http://madgenius113.deviantart.com/art/A-Long-Walk-159699761?q=&qo=)

oh, and we went to this really nice seafood place, called Bubba's or something, right on the inlet. you can eat in/out, see the inlet, and even go on evening dolphin watching cruises. really nice

My family and i want to take a simple vacation with our 8 mo old baby we just dont know where to go.?

We want to stay near the indiana, ohio, Illinios area.

Answer
I cant believe the people that say camping is great with a baby. They may be right, but I wouldnt try it with my kids (ages 2 and 3 weeks). Why? Because when we take my son to a new place to sleep, it bothers him- be it grandma's house, a hotel, a condo, whatever. So he gets fussy, he doesnt want to go to bed, he cries a lot, etc. And this is a laid-back kid that started sleeping through the night when he was 10 days old. I can only imagine how much worse it would be, being stuck in a tent with him.

When my son was 9 months old, we took him down to Hilton Head in SC. We left at like, 3AM, so when he woke up around 8:30 AM, we were already almost halfway there. We're thinking about maybe going back later this summer, after the baby is a few months older. We get a 2-3 bedroom condo. That makes it seem more like home to the kids. And they get their own rooms, which means they dont see us if they wake up a little bit at night, so they go back to sleep, rather than screaming to get our attention.

That being said, it sounds like you want to stay closer. Cedar Point is great, but an 8 month old would hate it, and would make it no fun for parents too. Same with Kings Island. I'd suggest someplace more laid back- like rent a couple bedroom cabin at Hocking Hills. You're still in a nice, quiet, natural area, but you've got a house which will make your baby a lot more comfortable. If you are willing to consider Tennessee/North Carolina, then you could also get a cabin on the Smoky Mountains. Its a very straight shot down I75, so its an easy and relatively short drive- shorter than many parts of Illinois and around the same as going to Chicago.
You could also consider renting a place on Put-In-Bay up on Lake Erie.
Or make the drive to the beach at Myrtle, Hilton Head, or Virginia. Kids like the beach a lot more than mountains anyway, stop halfway and spend the night if 8-12 hours driving is too much for your little one. Just be sure to get a place with 2 bedrooms if you can, you will all be a lot happier.

I am going camping with a few friends and dog in VA or NC. I am looking for some interesting sites that my novice camper friends lol. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hmmm I've been to over 2/3 of the NC state parks so I know them better (I usually camp in a tent as well). For novice campers at the beach-I liked NC Carolina Beach State Park-but I like quiet parks with a marina and hiking trails:
http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/cabe/main.php

In the mtns/piedmont-in NC I liked Hanging Rock State Park or Stone Mountain State Park (Stone Mtn is by the Blue Ridge Parkway so if it's campground is full you can find a spot at one of the Blue Ridge Parkway campgrounds-another good choice as well). At Hanging Rock you can camp and swim or hike or boat or rock climb-at Stone Mountain you can camp and hike or fish or rock climb :
Hanging Rock: http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/haro/main.php
Stone: http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/stmo/main.php
Blue Ridge Parkway: http://www.nps.gov/blri/

If you like the beach-I liked First Landing State park at a Virginia State Park where I stayed in a cabin for once-it had camping and swimming or hiking or biking or fishing and you could boat if you rented one in Virginia Beach:
http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/fir.shtml

If you prefer the VA mtns-I've camped at Shenandoah National Park as well and it was very beautiful-but I went off-season - not in the summer:
http://www.nps.gov/shen/

All NC State Parks: http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/main.php
All VA State Parks: http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/state_park.shtml

NC State Parks allow dogs as long as you keep them on a leash-I'd check on VA and the Nat'l parks-they're probably the same but I haven't checked in a while...

Where can I camp on the beach with my dog near Washington, DC?

Mandy S

I am looking for a campground along the ocean coast that will be within 3 hours of DC. The only requirements are being able to camp on the sand and see the ocean from our tent, and to be able to bring our dog. Thanks in advance!

Answer
There is a campground at Assateague Island that may fill the requirements. Not sure about the dog, though. One of the reasons is that people tend to think their dogs can run free without disturbing people or the balance of nature. The other is the presence of the wild ponies that are allowed to run free. Chincoteague Island also has a campground. There is also a campground in the Virginia Beach/Sandbridge Beach area. Delaware's coast is close by and includes some really nice campgrounds which are pet friendly. One fronts on the bay, but is a short walk to the ocean (no street to cross) and is very popular. Check the internet for Maryland, Delaware and Virgina campgrounds and see what you can find. The water oriented campgrounds fill up quickly, so plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time. Best bet: the campground at Indian River Inlet in Delaware.
