We are taking our Daughter to the beach for the 1ST TIME! We are SUPER excited, yet super nervous! She will be 17 months old and she is just everywhere! She never sits still, and she can pitch some tantrums! LOL...She has never been this far away from home (12 hrs) and we are just really nervous! Can you please give me some tips on how to make the trip and the drive easier? Thanks!

Answer
Car DVD player and several of her favorite movies or cartoon DVD's

Take plenty of healthy snacks and drinks for her.

Take beach toys- a pail and shovel, some sand toy molds to make shapes with. Pack a few surprise toys for her during the trip in the car. Check dollar stores for simple little things like a small stuffed animal or something she can play with in the car that won't make a mess. Pull them out every so often and let her have one to keep her entertained and happy on the trip.

Schedule breaks at regular intervals for the potty and just to stretch legs, get a snack etc.. You'd be amazed how pulling off the road for 10 minutes will revive you and keep kids happier in the car!

Lots of sunscreen and one of those little canopy tents to sit in for her or a big umbrella you can all fit under on the beach to protect from the sun.

Another thing with beaches- and I'm assuming it is an ocean beach- be careful about the water. Strong under tows can come in fast and be undetected even from a short wade into the water on the shore. If a little one gets caught by one they can be pulled out far into the water and drown. Be sure someone is holding her hand tight if down by the water and don't let her out of easy grasp for a second.

Baby beach tents: Has anyone used one before and do you think it's a good investment?

Double the

Since summer time is coming around and my second child is due in June I was thinking of getting a baby beach tent or some other UV tent for the family when going to the beach. My husband thinks it's ridiculous to buy one but my son and I burn easily (and so does my husband even though he doesn't like to admit it).

Have you used a baby beach tent and do you think it's a good investment? Why or why not?

Answer
I got a really good one from onestepahead.com. It springs up on it's own and the front and back open wide so that it stays well ventilated and doesn't get so hot (you can close them too for napping kids or nursing). It's fairly roomy too. The whole thing folds down and packs into a little bag that is much easier to carry than an umbrella. I think it's a good investment, I use mine at the beach all the time. The kids get changed in it too so we can avoid the restrooms.

Taking our 2 month old to the beach and need advise?

This friday we're bringing our 2 month old to atlantic city, any tips or recommendations on how to help him to not get burnt? We have a beach tent we're setting up, having a hat on at all times... What else? How old was ur little one when u first brought them to the beach?

Answer
My middle child was 6mos when she first went to the beach, and I think that was the youngest any of my kids were when they went.

Doctors don't recommend much sunblock for babies under 6mos, but they DO recommend using it if the baby has to be in the sun. You might want to get a sunblock stick for his face and hands, and then I would try finding a lightweight pair of pants and long-sleeved shirt or hooded coverup that will provide him some coverage. Sites like One Step Ahead sell beachwear that has SPF built in.

Definitely use a hat, and it may also be a good idea to buy or rent a beach umbrella. It can be positioned near the tent to keep any extra sun out, and can help if you keep him out of the tent for some of the time.
