Im going away for a few days and for about 4 day im going to be roughing it. ill be horse back rideing and hiking and camping outdoors with no shower or bathroom. what are some ideas that will help me stay clean and good smelling. i already bought dry shampoo for my hair and deoderant. but i cant use body spray because of misquetoes and bugs. i need some ideas like baby whips for a sponge bath etc. i also need ideas on how to keep my face clean and clear. i use proactive but i cant use that with out water. so i need ideas for acne or face washes that can be used in the woods. and also something to put my garbage in when im done. any ideas will be helpful. thank you
PS. will award points.

Answer
I can;t imagine there will be NO source of water. Most camping areas have at least a pump and if you are horseback riding there has to be some kind of water available at that facility. Bring a plastic gallon jug of water from home that you can refill from a tap as you need it. Also bring from home (or buy if you have to) a large lightwieght plastic bowl, like the ones they sell for putting chips in at picnics (places like Walmart, Kmart, Target should have them in the outdoor furniture or kitchen departments.) Also a plastic gallon sized ice cream tub would work if you have one of these. This is your outdoor "sink". Also buy a box of the gallon sized zip-lock baggies -- these are for your trash and also to carry your cleaning supplies. Bring several washcloths and a large lightweight towel -- a cheapo beach towel is ideal. The thinner the better since it will dry faster. Bring a small bottle of liquid soap -- actually a travel sized baby shampoo works fine.

When you want to wash, find a tree or bush to hang your towel up for a screen, or do this on your knees inside the tent. Strip down (naked or to your underwear if you are feeling nervous). Fill the plastic bowl with water from the jug, wet a washcloth and put a couple of drops of the soap or baby shampoo on it, suds up the cloth and wash yourself all over, occasionally rinsing the washcloth in the bowl of water. Don't use lots of soap -- you need very little, it is the water that is dissolving the dirt and stink. When you are done, wrap up in the towel and dry off. Using baby powder (the unscented cornstarch type) afterwards will help you feel fresh. When you are all done, hang the towel and washcloth in the sun on a tent or bush.

A great item you can buy from camping stores is a Sunshower -- a black plastic sack with a shower nozzle attached. YOu fill it with a gallon or two of water, leave it in the sun and it heats up to 100 degrees F, as warm as a normal shower. Then you can hold it or hang it in a tree, release the nozzle clip and have a warm shower all over. I love mine.

Baby wipes or feminine hygeine wipes are good for daily small cleaning up. The alcohol type facial wipes are better for the face and hands because they are not oily.

I've lived for as much as two weeks camping or at archeology or geology field camps and kept clean this way.

Answer
Here's some things that will keep you busy -

When you're kickin' around with your mates:

Host a lunch/brunch/dinner party
Dig out your mum's cookbooks, hit up the grocery store and cook up a storm for your best mates. Choose a theme for your party and make canapés, drinks, mains and decorations to suit your theme.

Beach games
Just because it's the holidays doesn't mean you need to sit around on your butt all day. Gather your crew for a day at the beach. Better yet, take a football or a volleyball set down their and get active on the sand.

Learn to surf
Have you ever noticed that girls who surf just look so darn cool? We think it's because they look so fit, active and they ooze confidence from excelling a sport that used to be predominantly for guys. Check your yellow pages to find a local surf school and brush up on your board skills. Who knows, you may even get a cute instructor for extra perve value.

Host your own open-air cinema
Rent a bunch of your favourite flicks, drag the telly and couches out into the backyard and create your very own open-air cinema.

Have a styling session
Get your friends to bring over a pile of their clothes and spend a night styling each other. You can dress each other up in looks you would never usually wear and maybe even swap a few pieces. What a cheap, fun night!

Go camping
Borrow a tent, torches and a sleeping bag from your folks and camp out in your backyard. Take an esky with you and stock up on yummy snacks and drinks. Sometimes you have the most fun when all you've got to entertain yourselves is each others company. It will be a great bonding session.

Set up your own beauty bar
Pool all your beauty products together and set up your very own private salon at home. Take turns at pampering each other with facials, manicures and pedicures. Make healthy drinks and snacks to serve and put on relaxing music, just like at a real day spa.

When you're hangin' with your boy:

Have a picnic
Pack a picnic full of all his favourite foods, grab a blanket and set up in a secluded park or beach. Spending time together without the company of each others mates will only bring you closer together!

Take a walk along the beach
There's nothing more romantic than walking along the beach, hand in hand with your boyfriend. There's just something about feeling the sand in your toes and listening to the crashing of waves that screams soppy love story.

Cook him dinner
Instead of going out for sushi or Thai like every other date night, why don't you try and cook him a meal. Find out what his favourite meal is, consult a cook book to find out how to perfect it and wow him with your domestic skilss. He'll be super impressed!

When you're on your lonesome:

Have a baking day
Don a cute apron, channel your inner Martha Stewart and try your hand at baking treats for your fam. If you want to get something in return for your efforts, set up a stall and have a bake sale.

Paint some artwork and decorate
Feeling inspired? Head to your nearest art store (or two dollar shop if you're on a budget) and buy some paints, brushes and canvases. You can decorate your room and the rest of the house with your creative pieces.

Make your own X-mas cards and gifts
The cheapest way to get through the giving season is by hand crafting gifts and cards your self. All you need is a few bits and pieces from the craft store, a little imagination and you've got the makings for a fun and productive day.

Do a little summer cleaning
The best way to start the new year is with a clean and organised bedroom. Get stuck into clearing out all your old gear, cleaning up your furniture and organising your room so that it feels fresh and clean.

A nice not crowded place to camp and have a good nature time?

My girlfriend and I will like to go Camping for Memorial Day. Somewhere around Los Angeles. We are thinking of a place not so crowded where you can have some space and nice landscape. Anyone know of a good place and if I have to make reservations or how much is it. Hopefully it isnt too late.

Answer
Too late!

The reservations for the state beaches went on sale back on Nov 1. EVERYBODY wants to get out of LA for the Holiday weekend, and you have to book early. You could check www.reserveamerica.com to see if there are any sites available in the area. Tent sites generally cost $15-$20 per night.

You can also try some of the campsites in the Big Bear area: http://www.bigbear.us/campingf.html

There are some Federal campgrounds in the Santa Ynez Valley that are beautiful, which might not be booked. They are also on reserveamerica.com.

Good luck!
