Myrtle Beach Tent Camping Areas?

bock101

Me and my boyfriend want to go to myrtle beach for 6 days April 9th, to the 15th. We want to go tent camping. We are trying to find a place that doesnt cost too much, and is close-ish to the ocean, and to the shops around myrtle beach (at least less than 5 miles away) but it doesnt have to be next to the ocean. our budget is $150 for the week. anyone know of any places? please list the prices and the website, thank you

Answer
Huntington Beach State Park is indeed nice - but it's in a whole different county than Myrtle Beach. It's over 1/2 an hour away. Beautiful place though. The name of the botanical garden is Brookgreen Gardens - it was part of a rice plantation a long time ago. But, HBSP is in Georgetown County SC south of Murrels Inlet and north of Pawleys Island. That's not "Myrtle Beach" down there.

Myrtle Beach State Park, however, is right at the end of Ocean Blvd in Myrtle Beach on the ocean and they have a nice pier there. It's not a good walk from there to shopping though but it's doable. Market Common is pretty nearby as the crow flies.

The KOA on 5th Avenue South isn't a bad walk (few blocks) to some scene and is reasonably close to the ocean. It's the only campground actually in Myrtle Beach that will have tent spaces - if they have tent spaces at all.

All of the other campgrounds are not in Myrtle Beach city and aren't walking distance to MB shopping. Ocean Lakes, Apache Campground, Pirateland, etc... all have tent spaces though.

Part of the problem being close to "the shops around Myrtle Beach" is that our city is laid out linearly - that is, it's one very long straight line instead of a central point with shops radiating outward. You can't be within 5 miles of "the shops" because those shops are spread along a 20 mile coastline.

The other problem you'll have is that any real estate valuable enough to put "the shops" on (such as Broadway at the Beach, Barefoot Landing, Market Common, etc...) is WAY too valuable to be using for tent camping sites. A tent site is about the least efficient and least valuable use short of a landfill you can put on a piece of multi-million dollar land. A hotdog stand would make more money. So, there aren't a lot of such sites along the beach in Myrtle Beach and even the KOA (three blocks back and across two major roads) is nestled into a residential area.

Tent sites at MB State Park are just barely under your budget amount. http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/myrtlebeach/camping.aspx

Question on Beach Tent/Shelter?

Woon

Hi, I am thinking of getting a beach tent for a day on the beach. Let me tell you what I need and then proceed with the question.

I want something that has a high sun protection rating and portable. They should be easy to setup and and can fit two adults. Preferably can shade the entire body when the adults lie down.

It is only for my wife and I to be sheltered for a couple of hours, we are not going to spend the night at the beach or anything.

I looked online and many of the models promises very easy setups. However, they looked light and flimsy.

Does beach tents get blown away easily? must I use tent pegs to anchor it down? If yes, how could that be easy to setup?

They are some models that have 'pockets' at the side and I am suppose to scoop sand and the weigh it down. Does this actually work? I know sand can heavy but the beach tent's shape acts like a 'catchment' for strong wind...

can someone share. I know this sound like a stupid question. But I grow up in a place without nice beaches so this is new to me.

Answer
You may want look up "Beach Cabana" on google. Here: http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&safe=off&q=beach%20cabana&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wf

They are usually light since they expect people to be carrying beach chairs, towels, and coolers. Sitting in the shade will be 100% sun protection, but you still have to watch out for the rays reflecting off the sand. The only way to avoid that is to zip a tent shut and bake inside of it. If it provides shade, you`ll be good.

Yes it`ll blow away if its not weighed down one way or another. Its essentially a kite if you think about it or even a parachute. If you`re laying in it obviously it wont blow away but if you throw a small cooler in the back there shouldnt be any problems. the ones with the "sand pockets" are better than just the regular pegs. The pegs wont hold in the sand.

Tent camping in SC - Myrtle beach?

aks5903

I live in myrtle beach and i want to go camping wit my girlfriend. We are only going for a night or two and we DONT want to be in a tourist campsite. Does anyone know a good place for more primitive campsite rentals that is still close to MB???

Thanks

Answer
Edisto Beach State Park. It is a bit of drive from myrtle beach, but it is worth it - it is beautiful there - it reminds me of Giligans Island. You camp in what is a typical camp setting - trees, dirt, outhouses, etc., however, once you cross over a hill of trees, on the other side you overlook the ocean and beach where there are not that many people. They have mostly primitive camping sites but there are a few cabins (less than 10?). There are no hotels nearby which is great too and at night, you can literally see the milky way. There is also a bike trail if you like that sort of thing. One note though - the surf there is very rough however the beach has a lot of shells - big and small. I live in TX and my husband I have been thinking to go there. My aunt used to live in Charleston and when we came to visit, we always went there. I think you do have to make reservations ahead of time though.

Are beach tents/sun shelters allowed on the beaches of Galveston TX?

WonderingI

We are heading to Galveston in August and I was wondering if anyone had any information on what beach to go to and if they allow beach tents or sun shelters on the beach. I will be taking my 6 and 4 yr old sons and want to have some kinda shelter for them from the sun.

Answer
Crystal beach is nice.

Here is the tourist information website link:

http://www.bolivarpeninsula.com/home/content/blogcategory/28/68/

And just a ferry ride back into Galveston are these attractions:

Galvestion Island - The Strand, chlitterbahn Water Park, Bishop's Palace, Sea Wolf Park, Stewart Beach, Moody Gardens and IMAX, Mosquito Cafe, Pier 21 Museum on the Galveston Hurricane, The Lone Star Flight Museum, Texas Seaport Museum, Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum, and the Sea Turtle Exhibit
Enjoy!

We are going on vacation next month and I would like some feedback on if an umbrella or a beach tent would be better for 6 people. My little boy is only 14 months old. So I definitely need something that he can take a break from the sun in.

Answer
Hey Misscrys:

Lot of varaities available on beach umberllas. I think beach cabanas would do the job for your requirements, check this link out;

Where can I find instructions on how to fold-up an Excalibur fold-up beach tent?

Dna-Dads

I have an old pop-up beach tent from Excalibur and I lost the instructions on how to fold it back up. It is quite a pain to figure out w/o the drawing that I lost. It has round fiberglass poles sown into the fabric - open in the front - about 8' round and 5' high. Thanks.

Answer
Dna-Dads -

You should check out NeedInstructions.com. They offer instructions, manuals and how to's on just about everything. I think they may have your instruction on how to fold-up an Excalibur fold-up beach tent. I know if they don't have it you can request it. It's worth giving it a shot.

What do you call those huge shade things on the beach that have four long poles and a tent like roof?

I've searched under beach tent and beach cabana and neither one seem to be what they're called because I can't find them.

They fit many people underneath, they have a long pole on four corners, probably like 8 feet high or so and then at the top there is a square or rectangle tent-material-like shade covering. I've seen people using them on many beaches but can't even find one online. Help!

Answer
I don't know about what they call them in America but they are called gazebos in England

What is there to do in Cape May with a baby?

kaylee2707

Besides the beach of course. I'll be going this summer with my then 1 yr old son and am looking for ideas. Also, are beach tents allowed there? I was only there once, a few years ago, and don't remember seeing any.

Answer
North of Cape May are either Wildwood or Ocean City, NJ. Both towns have great boardwalks. There are some kiddie rides that you could go on with your son (an elevated train, for example, in OCNJ). Treat your son to some Rita's Water Ice, too (yummy!).

The Cape May Zoo is a nice treat for kids, too.

Regarding beach tents: I'm not aware of restrictions, but you could contact the Cape May Chamber of Commerce to be sure.
