Any suggestions for my daughters 1st. b-day?

Evie

I would like a few ideas on where to celebrate her 1st. b-day, Preferably outdoors in the New York City Area. Any fun ideas for a July party?
I decided Tinkerbell as the theme. Any suggestions on where to do the party in the New York area? I know she will not remember the event but when she grows up she will be able to share the pictures with her children one day.

Answer
You can have the party at a park, a zoo, or at the beach. Or you can have it in the front or back yard of your house, or a relative or friend's house. Be sure that wherever you choose to have the party, that there is a good amount of shade, as it will be sunny and hot. You can buy beach umbrellas, rent an open tent, or if at a park, be sure to arrive early to reserve a spot under some shelter, or in an area with a lot of shade trees.

Have a lot of food and snacks, an ice-chest full of assorted beverages, some good music, and take a lot of pictures. In July, a barbeque comes to mind, as well as fresh fruit. You can have someone artistic in charge of face painting--kids always love that.

Just a couple of side tips: Plan your daughter's party after her nap time. She will be refreshed and full of energy, and you can help her avoid crankiness from becoming tired. I would also suggest keeping the party to immediate family and close friends, as too many people (especially strangers) can be intimidating and overwhelming to such a little one.

I hoped I helped, and I hope it's a great birthday!

What is a small dog good for hiking/ fishing/camping?

anti yuppi

I live in Alaska so I want a small dog that tolerates cold weather so I can take it with me and my Golden Retriever when I go hiking, camping, fishing, clamming, swimming, to the beach, berry picking, or on hunting trips would be great. I want a common breed because I want an adult from the shelter. Any ideas?

Answer
That's pretty easy, since most dogs (if raise doing so) love the great outdoors.

For you, I like the Norwegian Elkhound - Lots of energy, spunky and pretty small (20-40lbs). Nice, think coat, great for the climate. Coat also protects against heat, and would protect from rugged bush on trails.

You also may want to consider terriers. They have lots of energy and they often come in small, yet sturdy, packages.
Skye Terrier
Jack Russel
Fox Terrier
Welsh Terrier

More good options:
Shelties make for excellent adventure side-kicks.
American Eskimo (toy or mini)

I hope you will also check out the local animal shelters or rescues. There are lots, even in Alaska.
Shelter dogs come in all ages from puppy to senior. They are sometimes mixed and sometime purebred, and many of them would love to adventure in the outdoors with you.

what are some solutions to homelssness?

Answer
Assistance and resources available to the homeless

Refuges for the homeless

There are many places where a homeless person might seek refuge.

* Outdoors: In a sleeping bag, tent, or improvised shelter, such as a large cardboard box, in a park or vacant lot.
* Hobo jungles: Ad hoc campsites of improvised shelters and shacks, usually near rail yards.
* Derelict structures: abandoned or condemned buildings, abandoned cars, and beached boats
* Vehicles: cars or trucks are used as a temporary living refuge, for example those recently evicted from a home. Some people live in vans, covered pick-up trucks, station wagons, or hatchbacks.
* Public places: parks, bus or train stations, airports, public transportation vehicles (by continual riding), hospital lobbies, college campuses, and 24-hour businesses such as coffee shops. Public places generally use security guards or police to prevent people from loitering or sleeping at these locations for a variety of reasons, including image, safety, and comfort.
* Homeless shelters ranging from official city-run shelter facilities to emergency cold-weather shelters opened by churches or community agencies, which may consist of cots in a heated warehouse.
* Inexpensive Boarding houses called flophouses offer cheap, low-quality temporary lodging.
* Residential hostels, where a bed as opposed to an entire room can be rented cheaply in a dorm-like environment.
* Inexpensive Motels also offer cheap, low-quality temporary lodging. However, some who can afford housing live in a motel by choice. For example, David and Jean Davidson spent 22 years at a UK Travelodge [27].
* Friends or family: Temporarily sleeping in dwellings of friends or family members ("couch surfing"). Couch surfers may be harder to recognize than street homeless people[11]

Health care for the homeless

Health care for the homeless is a major public health challenge.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] Homeless people are more likely to suffer injuries and medical problems from their lifestyle on the street, which includes poor nutrition, substance abuse, exposure to the severe elements of weather, and a higher exposure to violence (robberies, beatings, and so on). Yet at the same time, they have little access to public medical services or clinics, in many cases because they lack health insurance[20] [21] or identification documents. [22] Free-care clinics, especially for the homeless do exist in major cities, but they are usually over-burdened with patients.[23]

The conditions affecting the homeless are somewhat specialized and has opened a new area of medicine catering to this population. Skin diseases and conditions abound, because homeless people are exposed to extreme cold in the winter and they have little access to bathing. Homeless people also have much more severe dental problems than the general population. Specialized medical textbooks have been written to address this for providers.[24]

There are many organizations providing free care all over the world for the homeless, but the services are in great demand given the limited number of medical practitioners helping. For example, it might take months to get a minimal dental appointment in a free-care clinic. Communicable diseases are of great concern, especially tuberculosis, which spreads in the crowded homeless shelters in high density urban settings.

Income sources

Many non-profit organizations such as Goodwill Industries maintain a mission to "provide skill development and work opportunities to people with barriers to employment", though most of these organizations are not primarily geared toward homeless individuals. Many cities also have street newspapers or magazines: publications designed to provide employment opportunity to homeless people or others in need by street sale.

While some homeless have paying jobs, some must seek other methods to make money. Begging or panhandling is one option, but is becoming increasingly illegal in many cities. Despite the stereotype, not all homeless people panhandle, and not all panhandlers are homeless. Another option is busking: performing tricks, playing music, drawing on the sidewalk, or offering some other form of entertainment in exchange for donations. In cities where pharmaceutical companies still collect paid blood plasma, homeless people may generate income through frequent visits to these centers.

Homeless people have been known to commit crimes just to be sent to jail or prison for food and shelter. In police lingo, this is called "three hots and a cot" referring to the three hot daily meals and a cot to sleep on given to prisoners. Similarly a homeless person may approach a hospital's emergency department and fake a physical or mental illness in order to receive food and shelter.

need a ceremony site for wedding in west palm beach, FL?

al

I'm getting married in west palm beach FL in May and need a ceremony location. I would like to have a ceremony outdoors that has shelter from the rain. It's a intimate wedding of 50pp so a large venue isn't necessary. Please feel free to offer any suggestion whether indoor or not. Also, I'd like to keep cost low!! Thanks in advance.

Answer
Contact Jon Enter. He's an enjoyable guy who I think would love to help you out with your wedding planning as much as he can. I don't think you'll be able to find as much assistance as he can give for a more affordable price. His advice will be free. His services will be very low-cost.
He is a pastor of a church, so he has a facility you could use, but he'll help you find whatever facility you want and help you with most facets of wedding planning as well. He'd probably be willing to perform the ceremony for free, give you pre-marital counseling which could make your marriage license less expensive, and more.

my cats been missing for 4 days..?

weeeeeeee

this cat is barely an outdoors cat AND he ran out with no collar on..
when is it time to call quits :(
ps weve checked shelters, put up MANYYYYYYYYYYYYY posters.

Answer
I had a cat once named Colombo and he certainly lived up to his name. He disappeared once when we had just moved. He got out the door and never came back. Though we had moved about 20 miles away, we continued to check the old neighborhood and had our old neighbors on the lookout for him. I had given up.
I had had him since he was a little kitten and had rescued him when someone had thrown him from a moving vehicle. The idiots had thrown him out while driving past a convenience store and gas station in the country. The store clerk had taken him to a little shelter behind the store and was keeping him warm as he had some obvious injuries. I stopped there with my future husband (my second and last... we are still together) on a trip to the beach. the store had a small grill and we had ordered a couple of sandwiches and were sitting at the picnic tables when this very strange looking kitten came around the corner dragging both back legs and meowing rather loudly. He looked like a tiny skunk and my then boyfriend jumped up to begin with until we realized what it was. The clerk told us what had happened. She mentioned she was going to drop him at the animal shelter when her shift ended. Something bout the way he came around the corner dragging his little legs and meowing as if he were talking to me, after having been treated so badly by humans touched me. He was my very first animal rescue. The name Colombo just fit.
We did not go to the beach but went home and had enjoyed 7 years with this wonderful little cat. The vet had set his legs and they healed so he barely had a limp. We were given medicine for his wounds and told to be careful as screw worms were apt to get in the wound. Within two days, we had that problem and dealt with it. Eve though the medicine we had to treat him with burned, he would lay quietly and let us take care of him, never trying to scratch or bite. When we moved and he vanished, we were all devastated. My husband and I had found him on our first outing alone together adn we had both known from that day we were meant to be together because of our shared love for animals. This little kitten had sort of brought our relationship from casual to serious.
We both cried when Colombo vanished. One day about two years later I was visiting my mom. My children had stayed home with my husband. When My mom's phone rang and she handed it to me I could hear the familiar meow in the background while my daughter excitedly told me how she had heard a cat on the porch, opened the door and there he was. That was 29 years ago and Colombo went to the Rainbow Bridge some time back. But I still think about his rough start in life, the way he brought my children an me together with my husband, and the fact that he led me into this business of rescuing where I find so much heart ache, but also so much joy. It often hurts, but I would not have missed a day for anything. We still will watch the movie based on the book "The Incredible Journey" and wonder about Colombo's own journey that time. I know I will never forget him or the way he brightened our lives.
So in response to your question : Never give up. Just when you least expect it, he may calmly walk back into your life as if he had never been gone. Four days is barely any time at all for a cat to be missing.

Why does bad weather make us depressed and good weather cheer us up?

Answer
not everyone reacts to that but when you think about it
when its sunny people are happy, its beach time. go out with your friends, shopping. basically your outdoors.

when its raining your trapped in shelter and you dont feel happy, because theres not much to do, they hate hearing the pitta patta it makes then depressed.

but then some people like the sound of thunder and like seeing the lightning . its totally up to the person.

and also the lighting(sun vitamin D gives you more energy), and the temperature.

I hate going to bed, because that's when I am alone with my horrible thoughts & it's agonizing - What do I do?

There's no distractions like tv, siblings, etc.. It just me and my thoughts of how much a pathetic loser I am and how screwed up my life is. How do I suppress these thoughts and look forward to going to bed?

Answer
Unfortunately, I have to admit my mom is right..being when she said, to take advantage of it, and use it to work for me..that's what she said when I was complaining about things I just dread doing.Mom is right on every count to. Blah. Another thing mom said is, you are what you think and if you aren't but you keep thinking it, soon you really will be what you are calling yourself in your mind. YOU ARE NOT A LOSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's just very easy to think negative rather than think positive. Life may be messed up, but that is life. Life is about all things, the good, the bad, the ugly, the beautiful, the prize, the win, the loss, the gold star and the demerit. Bedtime has become a dumping ground for you. For some reason its like the pile up of trash busts out the trash bag at bedtime and in your brain you are running around trying to clean, fix, or fast tidy the mess. You need to make some rules about bedtime and practice them until your mind obeys you. Re-do your bedroom so that it is clean, with an updated look to it. Move the furniture around or whatever you can do. Next I want you to not lay on the sheets, or have a top sheet touching your skin. I want only blankets touching your skin. I want you to use soft, fuzzy blankets, one to lay on and one to substitute your top sheet. Sense and touch are extremely important in training the mind. I want you to go through some magazines, old calenders ect..and find pictures of places you like. I enjoy pictures of camping in the outdoors, wild cats and nature. My daughter loves beaches and pictures of castles. Most thrift stores resale magazines. Put your pictures on your bedroom wall, insight so you can see them while you lay down. When you can't go to sleep because the trash is looming at you, look at your collection of pictures and imagine stepping into one of those pictures. What would you do, how would you live. How would you eat and build a story that applies to each picture. It is really important that you get away, take a break from the negative thinking. Unless it is a temporary problem like you are mad because training the dog to use the litter box is going so slow....the problem is still going to be there. Taking a break won't hurt or change the problem. The problem won't get worse nor disappear just because you took a ten minute break, so no worries. The first few times you do this, try to last at least one minute. I want you to find a picture of the woods solely. Instead of telling yourself all the usual, I;m a loser stuff, and especially when these thoughts are really intense, I want you to focus even more on the picture of the woods. I want you to build a fort in the wooded picture because you are going to need some sort of shelter, as you are homeless in this scene, due to agrree-ing to a weekend hike trip and getting lost. You only have a back pack with essentials in it. The group you were with has the trail map, so you are really stuck, and worse, you are at least at 14,000 foot elevation. Better google that, so you know what 14,000 feet feels like. In your back pack you have basics that all smart hikers have, water proof matches, a candle, a lighter, a knife, fishing line with a hook, a flashlight, heat in a can, and your sleeping bag, clothes and various other essentials. You do have some food, but you will need to procure more, somehow. Instead of being lonely, turn that into solitude. People pay top dollar for solitude. Instead of depending on siblings to distract you, turn it into a mind refreshing, mind building experience. Supress nothing, take control, you are the boss here, not a bunch of negative feelings. If your feelings need free reign to come out and play, then they will have to do so in the confines of the rules, which is no hashing and replaying during sleep hours, they must vent during the day when you are rested and better equipped to deal with and focus on them. At bed time, a person is just to tired to fully focus on problems and deal with negative thoughts, which may be why at bed time you are haunted with a pile of crap to deal with....you are tired, don't pay full attention to them, so they keep replaying trying to force out of you your full attention. It ain't working, so it's time to apply something new to the problems. I wish you well my non loser friend.

which breed of dog would be best for me?

I want a quiet, loyal, affectionate dog that will always be at my side. What breed should I get?

Answer
a newfoundland. they're HUGE - really really huge - but you can keep one in the smallest bachelor because they don't ask more of life than a comfie place to snooze, lots of love and affection, a casual stroll outdoors twice a day, maybe some outdoor "snooze in the sun" time or (best of all) swimming at the local dog-friendly beach or watering hole, and meals at regular intervals.

otherwise, check out dog channel's selector: http://www.dogchannel.com/dog-community/dog-breed-selector.aspx

close off the popups, answer some questions, and it'll pull up a list of breeds to consider.

if you're not fussy on the kind of dog, though, your best bet is the local animal shelter. the staff have a *lot* of experience with the dogs in their care and can give you the best recommendation to suit your lifestyle.

what should i do in an earthquake? stay inside or go down 1 flight of stairs?

i live in the second floor apartment.
if there was a megaquake of 8.0 or greater, would it be best to stay inside, or run down 1 flight of stairs asap?

the stairs end in an open area, so it would be safe there.
but would going down the stairs be too risky?
thanks

Answer
I'd go into an open area.

What to Do During an Earthquake
Stay as safe as possible during an earthquake. Be aware that some earthquakes are actually foreshocks and a larger earthquake might occur. Minimize your movements to a few steps to a nearby safe place and if you are indoors, stay there until the shaking has stopped and you are sure exiting is safe.

If indoors
â¢DROP to the ground; take COVER by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture; and HOLD ON until the shaking stops. If there isnât a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.
â¢Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors and walls, and anything that could fall, such as lighting fixtures or furniture.
â¢Stay in bed if you are there when the earthquake strikes. Hold on and protect your head with a pillow, unless you are under a heavy light fixture that could fall. In that case, move to the nearest safe place.
â¢Use a doorway for shelter only if it is in close proximity to you and if you know it is a strongly supported, loadbearing doorway.
â¢Stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside. Research has shown that most injuries occur when people inside buildings attempt to move to a different location inside the building or try to leave.
â¢Be aware that the electricity may go out or the sprinkler systems or fire alarms may turn on.
â¢DO NOT use the elevators.
If outdoors
â¢Stay there.
â¢Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.
â¢Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops. The greatest danger exists directly outside buildings, at exits and alongside exterior walls. Many of the 120 fatalities from the 1933 Long Beach earthquake occurred when people ran outside of buildings only to be killed by falling debris from collapsing walls. Ground movement during an earthquake is seldom the direct cause of death or injury. Most earthquake-related casualties result from collapsing walls, flying glass, and falling objects.
If in a moving vehicle
â¢Stop as quickly as safety permits and stay in the vehicle. Avoid stopping near or under buildings, trees, overpasses, and utility wires.
â¢Proceed cautiously once the earthquake has stopped. Avoid roads, bridges, or ramps that might have been damaged by the earthquake.
If trapped under debris
â¢Do not light a match.
â¢Do not move about or kick up dust.
â¢Cover your mouth with a handkerchief or clothing.
â¢Tap on a pipe or wall so rescuers can locate you. Use a whistle if one is available. Shout only as a last resort. Shouting can cause you to inhale dangerous amounts of dust.

why do people go to beaches?

jimmyjohns

I go to school in alabama and can't seem to figure out why people like going to the beach so much. For one, the sand is hot, there's not alot to do on a beach, sand gets all over your clothes and in your car.

I think i'd have more fun outdoors in idaho and in the rivers there. But everyone seems to love the beach. I can understand spring break and going to the beach and drinking, but why during the rest of the year?

Anyone wanna explain this to me? Maybe i've lived a sheltered life

Answer
I can see why people go to beaches in like Hawaii but here in the U.S I don't know why because the water is nasty.
But a lot of people like to surf, swim, play vollyball and hang with their friends.
The beach probably just isn't your style.
