Essentials for taking baby to the beach?

edm627

My son is 3 months old, will be 4 months by the time we take him to the beach, What are the essentials that we need (besides sunblock :)? A tent? A baby pool? Insect netting??

Answer
I would bring the following in this order:

Baby sunblock- you can now buy organic baby sunblock, but I don't know if you can use it on a 4 month old. As your pediatrician. Otherwise, dress him in light white cotton onzie and keep him in the shade - you could make sure your unbrella is a "sun unbrella" and treated to prevent UV rays etc. . .

A bottle of fresh water and a clean dry washcloth in a zip lock baggie. This will be important if he gets any sand in his eyes accidentally and you need to rinse his eye out. Mine were grabbing at everything including the sand at that age.

Enough food/water/bottles

Diapers/wet wipes- they sell disposable swim diapers that might be nice too- if you plan on going in the water with him, although he probably can just wear nothing in the swim trunks.

A plastic garbage bag for dirty diapers.

A hat to shade from the sun (if he'll keep it on)- babies have sensitive eyes- especially if they are blue still.

A sheet/ or "neat sheet" to lay on.

A sun unbrella or tent for the family- I suggest you dig a little cove/hole for him to lay in and cover it with a towel. You could even wet it a little. I found that to be very cool and comfy for mine when we took our boys at that age.

Maybe a spritzer bottle with a fan if he likes it and it's going to be hot.

If you are going to the beach and it's not in the mangroves or everglades etc. . . I do'nt think you'll need insect netting- I guess it depends on the beach.

Baby powder- this really helps to get the dry sand off the skin easily I've found.

Towels

A Camera (in a protected plastic bag)- to record those precious moments- if you aren't going to leave your bag on the beach

Extras: a little bucket to put some water or toys in for him to splash in.

The baby pool is a bit awkward and he'll be a bit young for it I think. . .but maybe a little blow up duckie bathtub would be nice- I like those because they are softer and easier to store.

I was wondering if it is ok to take a 12 week old baby to the beach?

My son will be 12 weeks old and i have the opportunity to take my children, one of which is 12 weeks old to the beach. We will be there for one week, private beach, air conditioned condo. I have a UV tent and a few umbrellas. I am worried about the heat and the sand. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer
of course or there will not be any people staying at coastal houses and fishing villages.

Just be wary of too much sun and be careful of hygenie & cleaniness.

Baby beach tents: Has anyone used one before and do you think it's a good investment?

Double the

Since summer time is coming around and my second child is due in June I was thinking of getting a baby beach tent or some other UV tent for the family when going to the beach. My husband thinks it's ridiculous to buy one but my son and I burn easily (and so does my husband even though he doesn't like to admit it).

Have you used a baby beach tent and do you think it's a good investment? Why or why not?

Answer
I got a really good one from onestepahead.com. It springs up on it's own and the front and back open wide so that it stays well ventilated and doesn't get so hot (you can close them too for napping kids or nursing). It's fairly roomy too. The whole thing folds down and packs into a little bag that is much easier to carry than an umbrella. I think it's a good investment, I use mine at the beach all the time. The kids get changed in it too so we can avoid the restrooms.

Is there such a thing as SFP spray for screens/fabric? Not a fabric color protector but SPF...?

I'm not looking for the UV protector to help your fabrics stay bright and not fade in the sun but actually an SPF spray that I can put on a screen tent for beach use. Thanks so much.

Hey moms, help make my beach trip easier, please!?

Aggie

Hey moms! Going to the beach this August with my daughter who will be 1 yr old. I'm fretting about the 4 hr ride, the sun, the water, the bugs and of course her eating the sand! Do you have any tips to share on how to make our trip to the beach easier? Thanks in advance!
I just wanted to thank everyone for their advice... all great. I wrote down a bunch of tips, went to walmart, and feel better all ready!

Answer
Take plenty of sunscreen, a hat, and some good beach clothes (light, cotton outfits are good). Pack some swimmer nappies (diapers) if you plan on going in the water.

Some beach toys are a good idea, they don't need to be huge or expensive. A small plastic bucket and spade set, some little plastic cups, a ball ... just simple things she can use to play with in the sand.

A good sized beach towel and some changes of clothing are a must! You won't believe how much sand gets everywhere.

A really good tip I learned is to pack a bottle of talcum powder. Sand sticks to skin and your baby will very likely be coated in it if she's anything like my little boy! Rubbing that sand off can be harsh on delicate baby skin and they wiggle and get upset and cry. This is where talcum powder comes in. For whatever reason, talcum powder particles stick to sand particles. Dust talc on the sandy areas and then gently wipe away, the sand comes away with no rubbing or brushing and - most importantly - no tears. I always have talc in my bag now when we go to the beach.

If you're taking your pushchair then have a sunshade for it to shade it when baby goes to sleep or pack a small play tent (you can get special UV-safe ones) that she can play in or sleep in.

Don't worry about her eating sand, some kids do. My son was eating double handfuls of the stuff on purpose and then accidentally ate more when he face-planted into it. It passes through with no ill effects, I promise. Just take plenty of drinks for her to wash it down lol.

Have a great trip!

Recommendation for good sun guard at beach?

Steph

I want to bring my baby to the beach next summer and am looking into something that I can put her in to protect her from the sun. I'm told those little tents are very flimsy and blow away very easily. I'm not one to usually carry an umbrella to the beach (unless I have to). I wanted to buy something now since a lot of places are having end-of-season sales. Anyone have a recommendation for something small and not too heavy to carry? Thanks!

Answer
They sell baby beach chairs with an awning built right over it. Also check out a website called babybanz.com. They have baby sunglasses that come with a strap that hold the sunglasses on baby's head. My daughter is four months old and she leaves them on with no problem. It's important to protect their little eyes from uv rays, too. Good luck. P.S. Plus the sunglasses just look really cute!!! And all depending on how old the baby is do not use sunblock till she's six months old, pediatricians say it's dangerous.

my baby will be 2 months old in about 13 days, is okay to take her the beach?

due in Apr

I mean if i get a umbrella and baby sunscreen is that okay?

Answer
I live in Florida where babies on the beach are a pretty normal occurance. Granted, there are some major precautions you need to take. First, sun screen is not recommended for infants under 6 months. You will need to have a very large umbrella or beach tent to keep the baby under. If you have a pack n play you can keep the baby in that. Keep your baby in THIN long sleeved shirt and a wide brimmed bathing hat. If you can, try and plan on avoiding the hottest part of the day when the UV is so strong. Also, be sure to bring extra bottles for her to drink.
