KayZeE!
Hey there! So, I'm currently just finishing up my BSN, to become a registered nurse, and am moving to New York in a few months. I'm coming from Logan, Utah (No, I'm not Mormon. Yes, everyone else is.). Any tips you have for starting off- or things you've learned about New York, or things that might make life a little easier when living there- or even just things that are common there that you didn't expect to be a part of the culture there-- Curious to gain some knowledge about succeeding down there! Thanks all!
Answer
depends on what borough you'll be in. staten island, manhattan, queens, bronx, brooklyn?
- some general info from the top of my head: it smells like maple syrup 1 or 2 days outta the year cuz there's some food additive factory in jersey. don't freak out.
- there's an ikea in red hook, brooklyn
- there's a target somewhere in queens
- more small chains and mom and pop shops rather than large stores like wal-mart
- don't go venturing around areas you're unfamiliar with...such as jamaica, queens, or bed stuy, brooklyn (common sense)
- a lot of gentrification in manhattan
- learn the neighborhoods...i.e. lower east side has a lot of gay night life, boro park has largest concentration of jews outside of israel, park slope is full of yuppie families, williamsburg and greenpoint got hipster gentrifiers
- everyone in manhattan walks super fast except the tourists
- most people in manhattan are tourists lol
- use iphone/android apps to make your life easier. subway maps, station times, food
- uptown means you're traveling north, midtown is times square area (42nd streetish) and downtown is southern manhattan
- peter pan donuts in greenpoint, brooklyn got the best donuts in nyc (tina fey gets em there)
- stumptown/third rail/intelli got the best coffee
- there's some bike service that delivers like anything...google it, i forget the name.
- wear headphones when walking around if you wanna avoid bums askin you for money on the street/subway
- hardly anyone talks on the subway lol. everyone looks depressed and sleepy
- eat at katz deli at least once, it's iconic
- go to coney island/brighton beach/rockaway beach to explore and chill out
- there are large parks other than central park such as prospect park in brooklyn, and smaller parks that you can 'get away' from the city at
- dog parks lol
- if you buy anything from a street vendor other than food, you can haggle down the price. i haggled something from 20 to 10 (prob coulda got it for 5). just use the walkaway technique. suggest a price, when they don't agree, just be like 'that's too much' and walk away. 9/10 they'll yell out to you 'okay' and settle
- don't buy every homeless story you hear. there are tons of soup kitchens, shelters, and job programs for em. they all usually have cell phones lol
- some nyu students do their thesis on homeless people and pretend they're homeless to study sociological effects
- don't give em money
- it's a very diverse/very international city. great for inspiration
- illegal to smoke in parks now
- illegal to smoke in outdoor seating at restaurants (seeing as you're a nurse, you prolly don't smoke, but then again, i met a ton of nurses who do)
- if you wanna smoke at outdoor seating, just walk to the street curb and have your smoke
- mission chinese (which just opened, used to only be located in san fran) has the best chinese in the city (i've been to the sf location)
- momofuku is a very hip restaurant/milk bar, also very good
- bagel culture
- rat kings in the subway prolly exist
- alligators in the sewers prolly exist too lol
