With all the news re Tunisia and Egypt, the flooding in Queensland, Au has gotten lost. I heard just a little blurb re Cyclone Yasi on the radio news yesterday. And found this little article on the BBC site. It sounds dreadful.

The poor people of Queensland. Are evacuations being called for? Etc.
Answer
This is indeed a very large and very destructive cyclone approaching the North Queensland coast. I spent many years in Cairns and Mission Beach and feel very much for the people living in the path of this cyclone. All hospitals and nursing homes in Cairns have had the patients flown out to Brisbane in eleven air force planes. Many low lying suburbs, caravan parks, etc. have also been evacuated with many kind samaritans offering shelter in their own homes. I have a brother and neice staying in Cairns, both unable to leave. I believe some people have been paying exorbitant prices to travel on the last available flights. The cyclone is expected to make the coast 10pm - midnight Wednesday. Flooding and cyclones are very much a way of life in the tropical north and people do tend to band together and help one another out. Cairns has a very efficient network all set up and an organised contingency plan in operation. The best link to find out what is happening with the cyclone is :

I wish everyone well in the path of this cyclone. I know just how scary it can be. Stay strong and help one another through this.

Distance between Sunshine Coast to The Gold Coast, Australia?
Sam
Hi,
Please could anyone tell me th driving distance from The Sunshine Coast to The Gold Coast and what is the closest import docks to these areas. My husband loves his speed boat so are any of the above coastlines any good for boating or are they for just surfing?
I look forward to hearing from you and thank you very much for taking the trouble in answering my questions.
Answer
From Caloundra at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, to Southport at the northern end of the Gold Coast, it's about 170 km by road and would take a good 2 1/2 to 3 hours on most occasions.
The northern end of Pumicestone Passage which is between Bribie Island and the mainland is at Caloundra and the southern end has access to Moreton Bay. North of Caloundra is unsheltered surf beach.
Southport is on the Broadwater which is good for boating and has direct access to Moreton Bay. It is the the outlet of the Nerang River which winds through the Gold Coast keys, . South of the Broadwater is unsheltered surf beach.
That may all be a bit confusing.
Put simply, you can take a boat in sheltered waters from Caloundra at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast to the Southport Broadwater and the Nerang River on the northern end of the Gold Coast. North of Caloundra and south of the Broadwater are unsheltered surf beaches.
I'm not sure what you mean by an 'import dock' but if it means somewhere you can put your boat into the water, there are many access points. If you mean where a boat would arrive from overseas, that would probably be at Fishermans Island which is at the mouth of the Brisbane River (which flows into Moreton Bay).
