How reliable is the surf at Bournemouth, United Kingdom?

Q. If I were to go down there on a random day, how likely am I of being able to surf?
I live in North Dorset, where would you recommend that is local, Abe? I must add, i'd describe myself as a beginner, i'm 16 and not a strong swimmer? Many thanks!

Answer
What surf ???? None to be had on that coast, the best places to head if its surf you want would be Cornwall or the Western coast of Ireland. To get any reliable surf in Britain you need a force 4 or more wind The South Western area of Britain is most likely to receive that as between there and America there is only the North Atlantic Rollers. That whole coastline from Lands End up to about Weymouth can get very entertaining in over force 4 conditions.
But it also contains many dangerous waters ie The Portland races where sometimes small sailing craft have been sucked under. If you were to be caught in the Portland races on a surfboard there would be little help as you would not live long enough to receive help.
Do not expect to find Ca quality surf in the U.k. our weather is not reliable enough to maintain such surf, hope you have fun though because if you are careful and do it right theres a lot of fun to be had. Brit surfing counties are Dorset, Devon, & Cornwall,
Somerset you can forget as most of its coastline lays in the sheltered waters of the Bristol Channel. The Water quality in the Bristol channel and its approaches are none too clean either due to several large cities along its banks Bristol & Cardiff etc etc.
South Dorset, Devon, & Cornwall all have cleaner Gulf Stream water.
In Western Ireland North to South you can almost always find good surf Again conditions can get real dangerous real fast so inform folks where you are going and when to expect you back. Hope that helped , and answers your question. See link re dangerous waters
.... Abe.... In Dorset theres Chesil Beach near Weymouth lots of native American artifacts wash up there after a storm, However there you must be very careful of tide changes they are drastic and fast also the beach Is made up of large pebbles so is capable of seriously injuring you as the surf rolls them not a good place to land, til you are a very strong swimmer i'd forget it.
If you intend learning to surf well go to Hale/ Bude or Loo in Cornwall there are plenty of surfers in those areas as they are some of Britains best surfing beaches. Also you will find local surfing clubs all along the Hale Bude area of the coastline. From North Dorset they are easily reachable in car bus or train, In Western Ireland at present you will find it very expensive due to the recession however the coast is dotted with surfing clubs over there particularly around the Galway Bay area. The Bantry area Co Cork is also a haven for Irish surfers meanwhile if you are serious then id Swim swim swim because unlike American coasts Britain is an Island nation we are situated in the middle of the Gulf Stream therefore we have many undertows eddies whirlpools and currents close to our shores( eg the Portland races) in a nutshell we have extremely dangerous waters. Before surfing here you should be therefore a very strong swimmer. Good luck .... Abe
