beach boys shelter youtube image
Q. How important is circumstance to you when, say, you hear a song for the first time? Or a song that you've heard a million times?
Does it change the original mood for example, like if you heard a happy song in a sad film, does it forever change your perspective on that song?
Example,
Good Vibrations - The Beach Boys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCeD_6Y3GQc it's a really upbeat song, but when I heard it in Vanilla Sky during that whole Tom Cruise going insane, eh, more insane realisation scene, haha, it changes the sound of the song for me -
- you know, the two contrasting moods mesh together...?
Also, that song Only You by The Platters, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9r2pEdc1_lI I heard it in a really sad scene of a film, can't remember what, but now it makes me really sad when I hear it. D:
But it's great still..
Anyway, didn't mean to go on that much, what about you? :D

Hi Ladytron,
This is an interesting question. There are certain songs that, when I heard them the first time, just IMMEDIATELY made an impression on me. I still remember the thrill of hearing Zeppelin's Immigrant Song when I was just 7. The excitement I felt at hearing that guitar riff, Plant's wail, then Jones zooming in with the bass is....it's as if my ears still remember that moment, you know?
In 1977, while disco was still dominating the pop airwaves, I retreated to Chicago FM album-rock radio. I can recall hearing, in almost total disbelief that something so cool could still be created in the disco age, the riff to kick off Van Halen's Runnin' with the Devil. That incredibly heavy guitar riff was like a shot in the arm for my rock'n'roll ears. Who was this new band? Where can I get the record!?
On the other hand, The Stones' song Sympathy for the Devil was a familiar & friendly album track in my LP collection; maybe not in my all-time top 10 Stones song list, but still welcome. Then when I saw the film "Gimme Shelter" for the first time - what happened at Altamont when the Stones were playing that song - almost forever changed how I feel about it. For at least 20 years I couldn't listen to it at all. Now, I'm able to endure hearing it if someone else is playing a Stones Greatest Hits CD, for example, but I don't have it on my iPod and I skip the track if I'm playing a CD on the home stereo. Too psychologically disturbing, even after all these years.

I am looking for new Beach Boys songs to get. Any recommendations?
