How do I keep baby out of the sun at the beach?

Sara S

Now that the baby summer stuff is going up for sale on ebay and local sales, I started thinking about the coming up summer (sigh). My baby is 4 months right now, and I've purchased a rash gaurd and baby sunscreen already, but I'm wondering if anyone out there knows of any great products that can help me keep the direct sun and bugs off of him when we go to thebeach this summer (we go alot, and I'm looking forward to getting outside with the baby) Or if you have any hints on bringing a baby to the beach, I'd appreciate them. I've seen little domed screen things that you can zip the baby in, they're kind of like a small play pen, but I think mine will be too big by the summer time.

I know I could get an umbrella, but that's not really doable in my area, they don't allow them on most beaches, and the shaded spots always fill up right away. I'm just thinking about all the new hazards (sand in eyes, sunburn, other kids, ahhhh can't wait)

I appreciate any advice from other parents, I will do a best answer as long as no one says "bring an umbrella" JK

Answer
Can you get a popup shelter? This may sound silly, but they have them for pets. It folds flat but then pops up into a cube. It might take some fiddling but you could cut the fabric on the sides so you can get to him but keep the top intact for shade. They're nylon so they're pretty sand and moisture proof.
Just found one for babies, here's the link to one on eBay so you can see it. http://cgi.ebay.com/Sun-Smarties-Infant-Beach-Cabana-Tent-GREAT-CONDITION_W0QQitemZ120378916326QQihZ002QQcategoryZ117033QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
What do they allow on your beaches? Could you use two chairs and drape a beach towel between them as long as his fingers didn't get pinched.
The only other thing I'd suggest is make sure he keeps a hat on to shade his eyes.
Hope your little guy has fun.

What are some good websites to find a portable bed or pop up tent for a infant for the beach?

Going to the beach next week with my husband and our 5 month old daughter... Seeking recommendations.?

BMD

I want to make sure I don't take too much; yet, I want to make sure I take everything we need. I am plannng to take:
* Baby float
* UVA Gear (Baby Glasses, hat, doo rag, and swim suit all from Baby Banz).
* Beach tent
* Beach "blankets"
* Beach towels provided at condo, as well chairs
* And then your basic things, such as clotehs, blah.. blah.. blah..video, camera, sunblock, baby clothes, chapstick, ???

but what I want to make sure is that I don't forget something major that is easily forgotten. Suggestions anyone?
FYI: We purchased one of those total body bathing suits for baby's made by Baby Banz, and it comes with a coordinating doo rag (absolutely the cutest thing I have ever seen in my life). So, it is total UVA. this way I don't have to put any sunblock on her. Now I will put a little on her hands, I have it all covered with the suit and the doo rag. She's just now 5 mos, and I'm afraid the sunblock will get in her eyes/mouth cuz she chews on her hands and rubs them in her eyes all the itme.

Best idea so far: THE BABY POWDER. I did NOT know that!!!!! Too awesome!

Answer
Umbrella you might be able to rent this......
.
Baby powder for sand... ( I live at the beach) If wet sand or any sand gets on skin,,, put baby powder on it and it wipes right off like magic. Even on wet skin with sand on it.
( especially under a wet diaper) A MUST have at the beach.

** they actually sell it here where I live at the boardwalk stores and package it as a sand cleanser product LOL** My kids always use baby powder on their feet and ankles before getting my car from the beach.

Does anyone know if sun shelters are allowed on Waikiki beaches?

Jessica

I assume the larger sun shelters are prohibited on Waikiki beaches as they strictly prohibit 'tents' to control the homeless. Does anyone know if a baby size cabana would get the boot? Or what is allowed? I'd appreciate answers from people who know rather than speculate. Thanks!
Since 'Smarter Than You' is such an idiot he didn't understand the question, I will clarify for future morons who might take a crack at this. There are small sun shelters for infants on the market, as well as other products that protect infants from the sun. I'm wondering which product would be the best for Waikiki beaches considering the prohibition on tents.

Answer
No. They strictly prohibit tents. Don't get all cutesy and call your tent a "baby sized cabana"

Things to do for free?

Insomniac

Me and my fiance get into a fight about this very question almost every day. He claims that because we have no money to spend on extra things right now, then that means that we have to resort to the same things we do everyday. Watch t.v., play with our 7 month old, and go on the computer. Hes starting a new job in 3 weeks so for now I am just trying to come up with a few things that will keep us all entertained. I can tell that my 7 month old is getting very bored of doing the same things all the time as well. Keep in mind I read to him a lot, he cant crawl or walk. The only things my son can do is sit by himself and scoot around in a circle on his tummy. We take him for walks when we can but we live in florida so going outside isnt always an option. We play with him with his toys and helping him stand and crawl but all of this he (and me) is getting very restless and therefore whiny. I need some suggestions on stuff that will entertain us at home. We dont have the money for gas to always go to the park or the beach or a museum. Please help! So bored!

Answer
Card games, poker, strip poker (lol) go fish etc. Dice, games in the closet, guess who I am or I spy. Make up a game. Make a indoor tent out of blankets and have a picnic. The baby will love this. Then when baby goes 2 bed have a little adult action. Take a paper plate and decorate it then take some paint (or trace) babys hands on it or a hand and foot. Hang it up in his room. This is fun and makes a memory. U can do it every yr 2 c how much bigger he got. do some scrap booking with anything u already have at home. Don't use stickers just draw. Wish I could think of more. I know how it is 2 b where u r. No worries it will get better.

Tent living in Hawaii?

Questions

I think I'm going to move to Hawaii and live in a tent on the beach for a year or so.

What is the cheapest way to eat?

Am I going to have to pack my tent up every morning and set up every night so it won't get stolen? That will suck.

Will girls date a guy living in a tent? haha

Any other advice?
Also what is the best beach to set up at? I don't want to set up in the middle of an icer beach. I'll probably be in the Hilo area.

Answer
That called being homeless and is illegal. You would be kicked off the beach.

Sleeping on the beach in Hawaii?

suspicious

My husband and I got buddy passes to Hawaii about 6 months ago from one of my husbands friends. Since then I have lost my job and we are running really low on cash. We considered canceling, however we know that if we don't go then we will never get the opportunity to go back. So, to get to my question. One of my husbands friends suggested that we go and just sleep on the beach in a tent. Is that crazy? Does anyone out there done this before? If so any input would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance!
Alright, so after everyone's input of thinking that we are crazy we have decided to stay away from sleeping on the beach and I am now looking into staying at a hostel. I am especially interested in the Banana Beach Hostel in Maui. Has anyone stayed there, or have any input regarding hostels. We have never stayed in one before so I am curious what others think about them.

Answer
There are homeless people living on some of the beaches in Hawaii. Some of them are from families who have been living in the islands for thousands of years, and they are not eager to have company from somewhere else, especially since it's people from somewhere else that introduced this crazy idea of land ownership and bid up the prices to the point that working people can't afford to buy homes in Hawaii anymore.

It's also illegal to sleep on the beach in Hawaii, day or night. So the cops could totally come and harass you. Dragging a tent and sleeping bags on the plane with you would be a real humbug, but if you apply for camping permits in advance, you could camp for five days out of seven.

Can I use a pop up tent on Waikiki beach?

Ai_22192

The size of tent is good for 2 adults, basically use only for sun shelter and not the zip up camping kind of tent.
For those who wonder why I ask such a question, it is because we used a pop up tent on Virginia beach only to be told that it is prohibited and have to take are tent down immediately.

Answer
Yeah, no tent allowed at Waikiki, cause block eva body view, and can't stay onna beach ova nite, ok? But you can bring umbrella, or can rent from Beach Boy rental or Star rental rite on Waikiki or Kuhio Beach, they rite close to each otha, so same beach really, ok? Also, lotta good shade from Palm trees, so maybe not even need umbrella, ok?
Peace and aloha to you!

Good tent ideas for baby?

LAP

Hi I am trying to find some of the portable tents i can get for my 5 month old cause we are going away to the beach in a few weeks and trying to find one that i can use for that and if u know of any what stores have them thanks so much.

Answer
We used to go to the beach when our kids were babies. We'd take their porta-crib (pack-n-play) and use a large beach umbrella to keep them in the shade. I am grandma now and I bought a pack-n-play that came with a cover - very nice for the beach and camping, too. I've seen some beach tents at Target so I imagine most of those types of stores like K-Mart or Wal-Mart would probably have them, too. Also, try a sporting goods store. We have Dunham's in our area and they carry that type of thing, too. I have also seen them on eBay. You want to only get the kind of tent that is specifically designed for the beach as the type of tent that you would use for camping, such as a small dome tent is not made out of the right material and does not have the right ventilation for the beach. Having been a tenting family for years, camping tents are incredibly hot inside when the sun is shining on them. You don't want to use this type of tent at the beach - your baby will overheat in it.

almost no one is coming to my wedding?

cougar2342

my fiance told me last night that a large portion of his family is not going to be able to come due to the possibility of job loss & the economy. fine, ok, it sucks, but it cant be helped in their case. however, between this, my family(i havent talked to my parents or sisters in over a year-their choice, not mine-so they will not be coming, both sets of g'parents are dead, the one aunt &one uncle i have probably arent coming-the aunt & her husbands family are going on vacation to myrtle beach, even though they got their save the date before christmas, have known about it for over a year, & only planned this beach trip recently, like the last few months; the uncle doesnt want to drive 6 hours by himself, or invest in a suit-i dont care about that last bit, but fmil pitched a holy hell fit about it-the rest of my family probably wont show up as a result of age) , & fmil making things as stressful as possible by refusing to pay until we almost lose a vendor(she told fh she would pay for some things to help us out), informing me that i had better make fsil(who will be barely 6 mos. preg.) moh(i shut her down on this one & so did fh as the one person i would want for that position that i feel is close enough to me for that are my sisters, which i have explained to BOTH of them, & the only one who has a problem is fmil-she likes fsil more than me), & generally doing everything she can to cause stress(which she didnt do in regard to fsil's & fbil's wedding). now 10 weeks before the wedding, she refuses to even talk about the wedding or anything to do with it, or even help w/ any of the stuff that still needs to be done. fsil(the only bm fmil cares about)doesnt care either. she didnt even bother to mail my shower invitations until 6 days before the shower.

we also found out last night that the friend who is supposed to be performing our ceremony is getting divorced from his wife(who is a bm and whose daughter is our flower girl). as this is more likely than not going to be a messy and nasty divorce(complete with custody battle), we are probably going to have to end up finding another officiant in less than 10 weeks.

fmil has made it clear that she has NO interest in our wedding or anything associated with it, as has fsil(she didnt even mail the shower invitations until 6 days before and im almost certain there were a few she just didnt send at all b/c fmil didnt like whomever). when fbil married fsil a little over a year ago, everyone was so happy and chomping at the bit to come. with our wedding, people just.....aren't. dont get me wrong here, i fully understand that w/ the economy how it is, people just cant do things like they used to, and things are harder for a lot of people. but like my aunt, who is a blood relative, who has known when my wedding was supposed to be for over a year now, suddenly decides to go on a vacation to myrtle beach on the weekend of my wedding(as in leave thursday to get to myrtle beach, spend the weekend, and come back monday or tuesday) w/ her husbands family.

i just did a head count and out of the 150 guests on the guest list, it is looking like only maybe 20 of them will actually come, and there are some of the 20 that may not come.

im just so disappointed i guess. so much time and so much money has gone into this(mostly mine), & all of our venues, food, etc. are for 125-150 ppl. i have 125-150 pre-printed personalized invitations, along with personalized napkins, matchbooks and a caketopper with our wedding date on it. had i known this was what would happen a year ago, i would have just not bothered. i actually was in tears last night. i dont know what i should do.
alot of the money that has been spent we cannot get back due to non refundable deposits, etc.
i wish we could get it back....
from what i can tell we may be locked into our original count.
also the whole point of having the wedding was b/c we didnt want to elope and we wanted to have family come. it just kind of makes me feel that they feel like our marriage is going to fail anyway so why come to support it. also where i come from if no one comes to your wedding, it is considered bad socially, as most people take it as no one approved of the union. i realize this sounds old fashioned, but it was what i was brought up with.
one of my big issues still is the sheer size of our venues. with only a few people there, im afraid the venues will just look huge and vacant. i dont know if i should try to change venues or something drastic?
for the ceremony we are outdoors in a large stone ampitheatre(sp?), so trying make it not gapingly empty is going to be really hard. we originally booked this place as we thought we would need the space for all the people....

Answer
I agree with Grammie. Focus on having a great time with your family and friends who do come.

If you've sunk enough money into a reception for 125 or so, expand to all sorts of friends, coworkers, and acquaintances. Tell people they can bring extra guests. Those who care about you will want to make this an event to remember, and most people love weddings and will jump to rescue the cause.

This won't make you feel better, but I did hear of one couple who broke up days before the wedding. There was a reception planned for 70 people, so instead, the bride called up a local homeless shelter and told them she had meals for 70 people if they could get them over, and held the reception anyways.

Whatever happens, good luck, and focus on building a new family unit with your new husband!

Got this idea from the other posts. I would like your opinion.?

Me and my boyfriend are looking to get a second dog eventually. We currently have a GSD/lab mix who is 5 months old. We would like to get another dog in the spring. We do two walks a day on weekdays and we both work full time. On Saturdays we usually go to the park for a romp w/ the dog. We live by a lake so the puppy likes to run in and run out and go digging on the beach. (We live in Saint Louis so it does it cold) Then on Saturday nights we hit up the bar with a few friends and leave our puppy with my brother's girlfriend's old english sheepdog while we are out. On Sundays we go to a family dinner where everyone brings their dogs and they play in the backyard, my boyfriend's parents foster dogs for the local shelter so we see lots of different pups. We would like to get an adult dog from a shelter, but aren't sure what would be good for us. I know we like medium to extra large dogs and we are fairly confident with training, not perfect though and have owned dogs all our life. We need a dog that would be a perfect companion for our young dog and for my parents' older cat that is soon going to be rehomed at our house. We do love affectionate dogs that are playful and like to cuddle. Our house is on the small side, but we do have a decent sized backyard. What breed do you think would be best for our activity level/lifestyle? Thanks for your opinion.

These are types of dogs that I like.... labs, GSDs, bullmastiffs or english mastiffs, weimeraners, huskies, malamute (not sure about these last two because they are very stubborn and aloof dogs w/ high prey drive) Basically, I like big, stocky, tough looking dogs. :)

Answer
Why dont you just ask your boyfriends parents to keep an eye out for a dog they think would get along well with yours?

There are probably quite a few at the shelter.

Question on Beach Tent/Shelter?

Woon

Hi, I am thinking of getting a beach tent for a day on the beach. Let me tell you what I need and then proceed with the question.

I want something that has a high sun protection rating and portable. They should be easy to setup and and can fit two adults. Preferably can shade the entire body when the adults lie down.

It is only for my wife and I to be sheltered for a couple of hours, we are not going to spend the night at the beach or anything.

I looked online and many of the models promises very easy setups. However, they looked light and flimsy.

Does beach tents get blown away easily? must I use tent pegs to anchor it down? If yes, how could that be easy to setup?

They are some models that have 'pockets' at the side and I am suppose to scoop sand and the weigh it down. Does this actually work? I know sand can heavy but the beach tent's shape acts like a 'catchment' for strong wind...

can someone share. I know this sound like a stupid question. But I grow up in a place without nice beaches so this is new to me.

Answer
You may want look up "Beach Cabana" on google. Here: http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&safe=off&q=beach%20cabana&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wf

They are usually light since they expect people to be carrying beach chairs, towels, and coolers. Sitting in the shade will be 100% sun protection, but you still have to watch out for the rays reflecting off the sand. The only way to avoid that is to zip a tent shut and bake inside of it. If it provides shade, you`ll be good.

Yes it`ll blow away if its not weighed down one way or another. Its essentially a kite if you think about it or even a parachute. If you`re laying in it obviously it wont blow away but if you throw a small cooler in the back there shouldnt be any problems. the ones with the "sand pockets" are better than just the regular pegs. The pegs wont hold in the sand.

beach naps with toddler?

Sexy Ma

when you go to the beach with your toddler...do you bring a pop up tent for them to sleep in or just put them under a beach umbrella on a towel? I am trying to find the easiet way for my 2 yr old son as i go to the beach often with him alone

Answer
We use an SPF-50 pop-up tent and it is a life-saver. It folds down compactly and fits in our beach bag but is still big enough for our 2 children and one adult to fit in. If it is nap-time, I lay a towel or blanket in the tent and zip the mesh door shut. Sometimes I lay a towel or blanket over top of the tent for added darkness and privacy. I think my kids sleep better if they don't have as much stimulation. What child would want to nap when they can see other kids running around having fun?! :)
Oh, and I also agree with investing in a pull-behind carry-all. They are so helpful, especially when you take the child(ren) by yourself.

Need a volleyball-proof infant shelter?

DW

My friends host a weekly volleyball game and would like to set their baby next to the court while they play, but they're worried about him getting hit by the ball. So they're looking for a protective shelter they can put near the court.

It has 2 requirements:
1) It must protect the baby from the ball, even if it's hit hard right at him.
2) The baby must be visible to the parents while they're on the court.

This is an indoor game, so the shelter doesn't need UV protection or sand anchors, but if you find something designed for the beach that's OK too. They can adapt or modify it if needed.

Any suggestions?
David: A hard-hit volleyball has a lot of momentum, a plastic sheet wouldn't stop it. It could topple the stroller if it hits at exactly the right/wrong angle.

Answer
Keep the baby in a nearby facility

mikah: About 5 months. He's perfectly happy in a car seat or stroller, but that doesn't protect him from the volleyball. We can put the car seat (or stroller) behind something sturdy, but then he's out of sight.

Answer
How about a small portable soccer goal? If they put it a little way in front of him, it wouldn't matter if it got knocked flying (since they are fairly lightweight). All it has to do is kill the momentum of the ball.

Night time beach wedding & reception??

BeAuTiFuLl

I want to get married on the beach at night...using Tiki torches or string lights. And then have my reception on the beach under a white tent again with lots of lighting....has anyone else done this or have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Answer
Hi there. It sounds utterly romantic. I have not had my own wedding on the beach, but it is very popular in my home town and since I work for a hire company that rents out marquees, we have done quite a few just as you described it. There are a few things to consider (too many to list here), so try this link http://www.beachwedding-guide.com/beach_wedding_planning.html

For the lighting you can use fairy lights and chinese paper lantens as well as lots of candles. Sounds too romantic! Good luck!

California Beach Wedding Reception?

nudayz84

I am looking for a location that will not cost 1,000's of dollars. My fiance and I have looked at a few places but they are too pricey for our budget. Where can I find some beach venues to celebrate our wedding reception? (We would prefer a tent on the beach or being able to see the beach from an outside area.) Any creative ideas on the venue location would help too!:)

Answer
Hmm i don't know what part of Cali you are lookin at but I am getting married in San Diego and did some research on this. First if you know someone close to you in the military, the San Diego coastal military bases all have nice reception areas that overlook the water.

Here are a few places i looked at near san diego.

Powerhouse Community Center
Address: 1658 Coast Blvd., Del Mar, CA 92014

Ocean View Villas
1364 Sunset Cliffs Blvd
(between Adair St & Point Loma Ave)
San Diego, CA 92107
This one actually has a rooftop reception area that you can either have bare or have a tent.

If you weren't planning on it being near san diego then i'm sorry this doesn't help at all.

where can i set up my tent near brighton beach - England UK?

amb

i want to have a nice day out with my boyfriend and set a little tent someone near the beach , not any camping sites because where not staying over night , couple years ago i heard you could put your tent up one stop after brighton marina at the cliff top and nobody would say anything ... could anybody give me some ideas ?

Answer
There are small tents at times on the cliff top east of the marina but it's close to the road.
There are small tents on the beach at times too and in good weather there are all night beach parties near the pier.
The best views are a few miles away though.
From Eastbourne Pier a bus goes to Beachy Head every 30 minutes.
Scroll down to ...Acess info/Public transport
http://www.ruralways.org.uk/walking/routes/detail/330
http://www.city-discovery.com/eastbourne/tour.php?id=2945
Also every 30 minutes a bus goes from Brighton to Eastbourne Pier and it's a very nice ride.
http://www.buses.co.uk/travel/service.aspx?serviceid=1233
On here there is a picture of the very twisty road over Beachy Head from East Dean to Eastbourne and another of the hotel by the beach at the Birling Gap where you can get a bite and a pot of tea or a coffee.
It's quite a handy place and there is a lot of space to hidey away a small tent for the day.
I know. You can guess how. I use a bike mainly but the bus is fine.

Best Beach for a Wedding/Elopement in Corpus Christi, TX?

Q. Hi there my fiance and I are eloping next Saturday, September 3rd 2011 at 7pm in Corpus Christi. And of course we are getting married on the beach! WooHoo! Only problem....we don't know which beach to go to. :( We are from East Texas and don't know much about Corpus Christi. With that in mind I've been looking online and notice Corpus Christi has about 9 different beaches. If any of the locals could tell me the pros and cons about the beaches in town versus on the Gulf like Mustang Island, I would greatly appreciate it. We would like to get one where there won't be too many people around, but knowing its Labor Day weekend I'm pretty sure thats NOT going to happen. :p
Thank you all for your help.

Answer
I am wondering whether you have some requirement for the location of these beaches in these area? The island beaches or the city beaches, which one do you like most? The island beaches may give you more charming and natural feel, while the city beaches may make your travel more convenient and comfortable~~

The South Texas Gulf Coast boasts some of the most stunning stretches of waterfront you could hope to find. The Corpus Christi beach experience is truly wonderful, with deep-blue water, sun-drenched sand, and a great climate nearly year-round. Here are some good choice for you:

1. J.P. Luby Surf Park/North Packery Jetty
Known as one of Corpus Christi's hottest surf spots for many years and growing as a popular kiteboarding area, JP Luby Surf Beach Park draws many young adults and teens to the beach for a variety of activities, including sunbathing, volleyball, socializing, and barbecue gatherings. Many beach-goers particularly enjoy the conveniently located equipment-rental vendors set up along the beach during the summer months.
Directions: Once on Highway 358 in Corpus Christi, continue on TX State Park Road 22, then turn left onto TX Highway 361. Turn right on Zahn Road.

2. Packery Channel
Packery Channel on Padre Island is a great place to surf, fish, and bird. Shorebirds frequent the flats at Packery Channel at low tide, with both Long-billed Curlew and American Oystercatcher in the flocks. Diving ducks can also be found haunting the channel's edges. Oak mottes, meanwhile, provide resting spots for migratory birds.
Directions: Once on Highway 358 in Corpus Christi, continue on TX State Park Road 22, then turn left onto TX Highway 361. Turn right on Zahn Road.

3. Padre Island National Seashore

Crossing the JFK Causeway onto Padre Island, where Highway 358 becomes Park Road 22. The seashore entrance will come up about 10 miles south along this road.

4. Padre Balli Park/Bob Hall Pier
This 374.5-acre beach park near Corpus Christi includes some 54 paved campsites with all the amenities a camper could need, including picnic tables, cabanas and a bath house. In addition, there are 12 hardtop campsite areas for those wanting to pitch a tent with water and electrical hookups. Primitive camping is also permitted on the beach.
Directions: You can find Bob Hall Pier by taking Highway 358 from Corpus Christi across the JFK Causeway until it dead ends into Park Road 22. Take Park Road 22 until you reach the Padre Balli Park. The pier is in the park.

Campsites in the UK near a beach?

Emmy

Where are there some campsites in the UK near beaches (not Cornwall) that are sunny etc and have like facilities such as showers

And are there any that allow 16-year-olds to stay there in a tent without an adult?

Answer
Whitby in Yorkshire.

We stayed there a few time, and it's just a short walk down to quite a nice, secluded beach.

Coastal art/artists : can you help me with my GCSE research?

Emma Maton

For art GCSE I have been given a costal topic. I actually hate the coast and feel no passion for it. We have been asked to do artist studies of expressionism, surrealism and impressionism. I can't find any artists that have done the coast in expressionism or surrealism! I don't know what to do... Please help!

Also, do you think octopuses and sharks etc. come under the coastal topic?
Thanks :)

Answer
Expressionist examples: Wassily Kandinsky Beach Tents in Holland 1904
Max Pechstein:Summer in the Dunes 1911
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Figures walking into the sea
This was not a common theme in Expressionist art but the above are some examples.
Impressionist Eugene Boudin favorite subject was people walking along beaches: e.g.- Beach at Trouville and other paintings (always small size) see Approaching Storm http://www.famous-painters.org/B-Painters/Eugene-Louis-Boudin-paintings/4-Approaching-Storm.html
I think you could also bring in paintings which view dramatic occurences from the seashore like Turner's paintings of storms, e.g. Pembroke Caselt, South Wales: Thunder Storm Approachinghttp://www.william-turner.org/Pembroke-Caselt,-South-Wales--Thunder-Storm-Approaching-large.html Although Turner is considered to be a romantic rather than an expressionist painter.
I don't think that octupuss and sharks come into the topic, but anything lying on the beach like seashells or boats would be. Or watching a storm from the beach
Surrealism: Rene Magritte Composition on a Sea Shore

Giorgio de Chirico's surrealist painting 2 horses on a beach http://www.flickr.com/photos/artimageslibrary/3761296276/
Hope this gives you some ideas

where did you go in your year 11 summer??/where's the best place to go/ staying in wales?

Mellow-Mag

and what about Trecco Bay in south wales???
i cant wait till the long year 11 summer..
ive been offered to go to Newquay but im not that sort of surfing/clubs type person so ive declined
there's four or so of us that still want to go away.. i've been looking at places in south wales near a beach and possibly stay in a caravan park but i've got no idea where the best place to go is
we are also BIG gavin & stacey fans, i'd love to go to barry island as it looks as though there's a lot to do there but there doesn't seem to be a nearby caravan or holiday park to stay in
we want to go somewhere preferably near a beach but with other things to do there
obviously we'd be on a budget
any ideas???

thanx in advance
we don't live in wales and we were already considering going to T4 on the
beach aswell

Answer
Wow, I remember that like it was yesterday!! One of the best summers!

I might suggest T4 on the beach, I think its on the 19th July, in Weston Super Mare. It offers a great day out with friends. Its not in Wales but not to far. Tickets are usually about £30.00. You could make a weekend of it and camp in tents.

But if your on a really tight budget, just get a group together and go camping, you live in Wales, you could camp anywhere! Just grab a few tents, maybe if you have older friends who have cars. And pitch up anywhere! Oh and don't forget your guitar!

Apart from that I don't know what to suggest, just start making a list of things, and post it on facebook for friends to add to!!

Have fun, Claire :D

EDIT: Where abouts do you live??, I might be able to make a few suggestions

I just found a baby possum in really bad shape....?

Q. i brought it home for fear the street cats were going to kill it. which agency can I contact to come and rescue it. I'm in miami beach...

Answer
Go through this site. You will find the right shelter I think.

http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=3

Others might want to pay attention to it also, for a person can click a button daily and help feed homeless animals. it is my home page so that every day when I log on, the first thing I do is donate half a bowl of food to some homeless creature. I also support the Rabbit Sanctuary listed there.

I am having trouble finding a baby guinea pig to adopt?

Q. I'm having trouble finding a baby Guinea Pig to adopt in the Palm Beach/Miami, Florida area.

Anyone have any tips or websites?

Answer
Go on petfinder.com. Read the newspaper and see if there is any shelter close to where you live. Or just ask someone. Remember to adopt more than one guinea pig so they will have a buddy to keep them company when you are not around. Im glad you are choosing to adopt instead of buying one. Good luck!

What is the best brand tent for the money?

Victoria

For Christmas I am getting my boyfriend a tent, a portable stove, and some various camping gear. The tent will most likely be used in the woods (aka, not the beach) and with our luck, it usually rains.

My budget is 150, preferably 100 but I'm willing to spend 150 on the tent.

What is your recommendation? What to avoid? Where to buy the tent..I don't mind buying online.

I'm read reviews on various websites and I just can't decide. I know we don't need much room but maybe he would like a great big tent. Would a big tent be ridiculous for just 2 people (aka: 6-8 person tent)?
(To clarify, 150 is JUST the tent budget)

Answer
Go to Walmart and check the Coleman and Ozark tents to find something sizable enough within your budget. They are both as good as you can get for this amount. They will last several years with proper care.

What's the nicest and most relaxing place to stay on Waikiki beach?

nickjg2

Looking to visit Oahu and see a few friends but reading a lot of bad hotel & resort reviews for all of Waikiki beach. Any suggestions?

Answer
If you want quiet and relaxing I would check out a vacation rental at www.vrbo.com or something along that line and you will be better off than waikiki. However I put together an informative post for things in and around waikiki which some will pertain to you. Have a great trip!
I am a nature nut and Hawaii is a great place to enjoy our beautiful planet! I put this together earlier but wanted to share it with you because there are some things here that will help you out! Hawaii is definitely worth it! I just can't get enough of that place! I have been 6 times and I have found enough on Oahu to do that I haven't even ventured out to the other islands yet! Here are some things in Waikiki and around the island to do; Dukes is def cool and right on the beach, and if you want to dance you can head over to Scruples. If you like to drink then do it in your room cause it is way way to expensive at the clubs. I suggest going to one of the 50+ ABC stores and grabbing your alcohol there for much cheaper! There is a ton of eating places down on the strip but the real Hawaii is out of town. Take the bus or drive up to manoa valley and experience the rainforest and a natural waterfall! Take a trip to the north shore and go to Waimaia Valley and see some of the most spectacular fauna anywhere! If you adventurous hike along the ridges and see paradise from 4000 feet! I did that and loved every second of it..Ok well it was more like 8 hours of it but anyway..lol. This link will take you to a site with very detailed info on hiking trails http://www.hawaiitrails.org/ Diving and snorkeling are pretty awesome too! Hanuama bay is touristy and with good reason. You are guaranteed to see tons of fish and have a nice afternoon at a beautiful beach! Diving can be done just off shore and runs around 100 bucks for 2 tanks and you don't need to be experienced. Not far out of town you can jet ski or parasail. Wouldn't really bother with the jet skiing because they have too many rules in Hawaii but the parasailing is something you should at least try once. After that it gets kind of boring. In town the international market place is def cool and worth strolling through...a tip..go to all the kiosks and then go back and don't be afraid to barter..that's how it works there! On the weekend a really cool thing to do it go to aloha stadium for a huge flea market!!! I mean huge the tents go all around the stadium and everything you find for souvenirs in Waikiki you will find there for way I mean way cheaper!! Oh one last thing, you have to go to a Luau and the Paradise Cove Luau is the best. oh crap...just thought of something else that will help you out. Go to www.Entertaiment.com and buy the book for Hawaii and it will give you so many discount coupons it will pay for it self right away. I did and it worked great. I just found another site that has coupons that you can print off the web so check this one out too http://www.ecouponshawaii.com/. Don't forget that part..really do it and you won't be sorry. Many 2-1 coupons on dinners in the Entertainment Book. Waikiki is is really expensive so anytime you can save money itâs a good thing. I have been to Hawaii 6 times now and would love to live there. I hope you make it because you won't forget it! Aloha!

Some more stuff:

Must See Attractions

Paradise Cove Luau - Best on the Island (get entertainment coupon"
Polynesian Cultural Center - North Shore (can catch show here) Make sure you get the "entertainment coupon" At the 42-acre Polynesian Cultural Center, you can experience the everyday adventures of Pacific cultures first-hand. Immerse yourself in the habits and customs of the real Polynesia, while natives demonstrate the art of dancing with fire, making jewelry from plants and climbing 50-foot trees in bare feet. And our new âGo Nativeâ activities let you try your hand at authentic activities and games in our seven native villages. Try Tongan spear throwing or participate in the Haka war dance of New Zealand. Enjoy the AliâI Luau, named âMost Authenticâ by the Kahili Awards, and the âHorizonsâ night show, featuring over 100 native performers
Diamond Head - Cause everyone's doing it
Waikiki- Can't go to Hawaii and miss the strip
Manoa Falls - An easy hike with views and feel of the jungle and it's free!
Hanuama Bay - Best tourist snorkeling in the islands!
Drive the Pali Highway and go to the lookout
Pink Cadillac is where most Japanese gals hang out and is located in Waikiki on Ena Road!
Zanzabar in Waikiki it's in the Waikiki Trade Center on Kuhio Avenue.
Pipeline Cafe in Honolulu located behind Dixie Grill.
The Ocean's Club located in the Restaurant Row Shopping Center.
The Mai Tai Bar located in Ala Moana Shopping Center located across from Bubba Gump 2nd floor from Shirokiya. The food & drink menu is awesome!
Rumours nightclub is located in the Ala Moana Hotel.
The Galaxy Club located at 1739 Kalakaua Avenue across the street from the back half of Hard Rock Cafe in Honolulu.

Makiki Heights drive - Tourists don't find this gem and it's amazing! MUST SEE. Check your map to get to Makiki Heights. Great views of the island

Restaurants: There are tons of restaurants in Waikiki. If you are young and like to drink then drink b/4 you go out! The Pacific Beach Hotel has drink specials all week long and there a good deal. There are Mai Tai specials all over but DIXIES has the screamin Mai TAi which comes in a 32 oz glass and is about 6 bucks!!! Good Eats there too! For cheaper eats go outside of town over towards the Kaneohe side. If you do want to eat in Waikiki then I would highly recommend that you go to www.entertainment.com and buy the book for Hawaii. This coupon book will save you a ton on the island! Seriously every time I go I get the book and use all the 2-1 deals in it! Check ebay for it too sometimes you can get it dirt cheap!

Hotels; Best hotel for the money is the Ocean Resort Hotel on the east end of the strip. Very close to the beach, decent rooms, service is good and you will pay under a 100 a night for most rooms and the parking is much cheaper than the other hotels. Most parking isnât included in the cost of your hotel and can be as high as 17$ per day to park. At the Ocean Resort they have limited parking but you can park across the street for 5$/day!

Some things to do in North Carolina?

Abby N

In Summer 2012, I'm planning a trip to North Carolina. I'm taking my 4w jeep, and one other person, my boyfriend. I want to spend like a week living on the beach, in a tent . I'm buying bicycles and I was thinking we could bike around and go shopping, and just be care free and have fun. I'm going to be 16, he 17 and was wondering if there is anything I need to make this happen? I want to have a kind of secluded beach so no one goes through our stuff. Any suggestions?
>and just because it's going to be my boyfriend and I, doesn't mean we're going to "get it". Sex isn't everything in a relationship people. THANKS : ) <

In Southern California what distinguishes a north facing beach from a south facing beach?

Annonymous

Answer
The south-facing beaches are primarily Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Oxnard. The current is different, the water is colder, and they are sheltered from the bigger waves of the Pacific because of the Channel Islands (except Rincon).

North-facing beaches are small, northerly extensions that don't amount to much.

West-facing beaches (San Diego, those lower than Ventura County) have more wave action and warmer water. They're much more comfortable for casual surfing.

Is it illegal to pitch a tent on the beach?

Donna

hello world, im a 16 yr old student at a catholic high school in florida. spring break is coming up so that means every body will be flocking to the beach , New Smyrna Beach to be exact just a few minutes south of Daytona Beach . My buddy and i were wondering if we could pitch a tent on the beach ? i know it sounds dumb but we wanna try it. so can we pitch a tent on the beach?

Answer
it depends on the beach.
On some beach where i go with my cousin we do pitch a tent on the beach, but its a very unknown beach so there are no rules on it (yet).
And because it sounds like New Smyrna Beach is a very well know and popular beach, it probably has rules like a curfew time or policies that do/don't let you pitch a tent.

Personally, i would bring the tent and book a hotel room (if you don't want to drive home, because i don't know how far the beach is away from your house) and then when you get there make sure to find out the rule on tents/curfew. if there are, go to the hotel (or go home) and if there aren't, cancel the hotel room and camp out!

Good luck and have fun!!
PS. because your 16, make sure to check the age if they let you stay in a tent on the beach. I was 15 and my cousin was 17 and we were allowed to pitch a tent on a well known becah about 2 hours from her house. BUT there was a age restriction of 18 or older so we had to go home. ther were no hotel rooms open so we ended up sleeping in the car.

Peace and aloha to you!

what did you dream last night?

Answer
well i dreamed that my dad and me were going to like a family cookout but ended up camping out in the woods then i walked down a trail and it opened up into a beach with hawians on it but every time the tide came up it would flood the beach and hit this huge dirt wall behind the beach. i ended up telling my dad and we talked to the hawians and they said they needed our help to find them a new home. so we agreed to help them. we hiked up this steep hill and inn the middle of the wood there was a picnic shelter. with a trail the led down to a freshwater lake excactly like the one that my cousin live beside which was weird and it even had the same bridges that that lake had.we told the hawians about it and they liked it and asked us to take them to it so we did but we took them during high tidde so every time we to a step a wave would crash on us we had to hold on to a vine that was on the big dirt wall so we wouldnt fall we finally reached the new place and everyone went swimming in the lake and all of my friends ended up swimming with us but then a storm came and eveyone was yelling get out of the water but then the storm just went away and then i woke up

dream help?!?!?!?

ziggie

I woke up infront of a comic book store with my friend looking at superhero costumes, me and my friend were checking out some daredevil gloves and nunchucks discussing if i should try it on. What i was really looking for in the dream was a spider-man 2099 costume but they were out of them. We walked away from the store onto a beach and while we were i was trying to conciously conjure up a spiderman 2099 costume but that didnt work. And while we were walking i saw a girl i knew and liked from middle school sitting on a steep hill over a small trench, we both sat and all talked for awile till i had to go home. Whewn i was at home a homeless man talked to me (probly my brother) about her and asked me if i liked her, i said yes and he said "why dont you tell her" or "lets go see her" and at first i denied but then i gave in and went with him to his car and drove in the rain well he drove. We ended up in a house for shelter and promised the man a lighthouse because his dad was looking for a
lighthouse man and i pointed to a picture orf a man in a yellow jack and a yellow hat that looked like a fisherman that looked like my brother when he got alought older. We went out again the next day after i went to the store to pick out (marvel ultimate alliance) but they didnt have it, actuly it was before he came to me. Anyway we drove down the highway and i saw two lighthouses in a cityscape but i knew neither belonged to kiahs dad. we thwn went to the mall were or a market but i still couldent find it but hellboy 2 caught my eye. We went out again and asked if anyone knew kiah but no one knew her or her dad, we were on another hiughway later and took a wrong turn under a tunnel and i remember saying that we had to get out of there quick before the vampires came. Then the next thing i knew he was jumping off ramps on top of crates and through hoops past a dummy dressed as a scarcrow which we somhow either got points for or passed a test. The next thing i
knew i was a older lonar with a jean jacket with baggy clothing on a sport bike still looking for kiah, i asked at a store but the woman pushed me out and sent some people to steal my bike so i stole thier chopper chained up infront of a bar.

Answer
this dream is very complicated. but i think what it is telling you is that you need to focus on the important things in life or those things that are important to you now will be lost. Seems you had a desire to find this girl again, but the super hero thing kept popping into your mind, maybe distracting you or keeping you, and keeping you in a straight direction to the things that are really deep down important to you. I don't know how old you are, but maybe you should keep in mind, that there some things that come into our lives and if we pursue them, or let them become more important than they should be, it will only in the long run, do us harm or steer us away from whats important. seems to me you should make relationships with family (like your brother), certain friends(like the girl), and people in need of your help (homeless man) a priority . Rather than chasing after things and fantasies that will amount to nothing.
think about whats important to you now. and what you think will be important to you 10 - 15 years from now.
Also, maybe you are going to really help people. You probably have a gift to help people and you don't know it.
Don't worry if you don't feel like you are able or prepared to help other people. just do it. you don't have to look the part(like having the costume) it's whats inside that counts.

BEACH WEDDING..Any suggestions for invitations, favors, details etc?

*Heather*

We've decided to get married on the beach in Orange Beach Alabama (we live in Alabama) Does/has anyone had a wedding on the beach any helpful hints would be appreciated.

Do you know any good reception venue locations?

Any little details like the flip flop basket is cute any others?

Options to the unity candle and something for loved ones passed?

What about food and drinks?

Entertainment?

Wedding favors?

Bridesmaid and Groomsmen favors?

ANY OTHER IDEAS???

I want this to be beautiful and romantic just like every other bride but I'm artistic and a very tight penny pincher and I can decorate most anything. We've decided that our color is turquoise blue and I'm thinking I want one more color incorporated any ideas?

Basically, any detail any small idea that you have would be moer than appreciated and more than helpful for me! ANY suggestion is very much WELCOMED. Thanks so much guys!! Oh and if it helps we're looking at an early August wedding.

Answer
I had my wedding on the beach. Down here in Florida we have a park with shelters at the beach. We took the picnic tables out from underneath it and set up tables and chairs (our color was turquoise and silver). It wasnt like a normal picnic shelter, it was white and a dome. Anyways for the centerpieces I got heart shaped glasses at walmart for like $1 and white tea lights. Then we went to the beach and picked up shells. We put sand in the glass, then the tea light in the middle, and then the shells around the tea light. Everyone loved them and some guest took them home and use them at parties. If you would like a picture send me a message and I will show you.

We got sand dollars at a local store at the beach (enough for each guest) and wrote their names on the sand dollar and that was our favors (about $1-3 a sand dollar).

My dad took the sand dollars, a centerpiece, our invitation, and a picture from our wedding and set up a cute little area, and everytime we go over to his house it gives us a cute little reminder.

For the bridesmaids I gave them a necklace and earring set from claires for them to wear at our wedding, and it was simple enough that they could wear it again if they wanted to.

Our cake was kinda beachy, instead of using stafish and other things normally used we had our cake decorater using icing to make it look like we had pearls strung around the bottom of the layers of cake. It was simple but beautiful.

For entertainment we just used a DJ but our first dance song was Love Song by 311 which was OUr Song from the beginning (but if you listen to it, it has a reggae beachy sound to it). Oh and you can have a wedding on a tight budget, our was for under $10k with 40 people.

Good Luck on your wedding, I hope its everything you want and more!

Tent Camping on the Beach?

Luo

Has anyone ever camped on the beach?
I am considering taking the kids up to Lake Erie to camp on the beach there.
I don't have a "special" beach tent. I want to use my smaller nylon dome tent.
Will I have trouble with this?

Answer
Do not need any "special tent". We are using a 2 man pop up camping tent(link below) and it work well for beach camping.Wind can and will be a problem. We actuall had one of those canopies get away from us in some high winds at the beach , but that was just a daytime setup. I imagine the wind gets pretty rough there, unless you can get back and out of it somehow. if there{s a lot of night wind the tarps can get pretty noisy. Try to find a sheltered are if there is any. But beach camping is great fun and pretty comfortable. You might need to empty the tent and shake out excess sand every day or two though. Night time may not be so bad though.

I would be taking the ferry..what is there to do there? I hear you can look at houses and that there is a museum and lots of restuarants. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
There is basicly not much to do there. If you are staying the night i would check out the bar at Sunset Beach, it is the only large bar and scene on Shelter Island. There are a few art gallery's and a small musem or two. Othe rtahn that you can rent a bike and go on a bike ride around the island or goto crescent beach which is across the street from the Sunset Beach Resort and hang in the beach, i think they have volley ball nets up too. The best reason to go to Shelter Island is Commander Cody's Ribs and fried chciken,. I have traveled the entire countyr and have not had ribs and fried chciken as good as he makes it . He is crazy and you may need to call ahead to make sure he is cooking but it is worth the 2+hr trip from NYC. there is no good shopping and only 1 or 2 other restaraunts worth going to(vVne St., French very good) hope that helps.

Best public beaches on Long Island for a wedding?

PlanB

My fiance and I are planning a wedding for May and would love to have it on a beach on/near Long Island. My family lives near Islip. We live in Virginia, where the cost of living is extremely lower, so we are sticking to a very tight, low budget. Therefore, we don't have the money to spend on beautiful wedding resorts like Lands End.

We were thinking a public beach would be best, because all you will need is a permit (plus the chairs and decorations). Here's my question. What are the best public beaches on Long Island for a wedding? Please give me your top 5 or 10. I really appreciate your help.

Answer
the cost to reserve space at most of long island's public parks is about 250 on the weekends. you must also have a permit for alcohol such as wine or beer (no kegs) in cans or bottles. that costs 25. there is also a fee of 25 for a permit for the use of music of any kind.

you must apply for your permits at least 10 days in advance of the date and you will be on a first come, first served basis, so apply early to get the date you want.

you can not use any tents but many of the public beach parks have shelters or pavilions which you can apply to use. you can only have food at certain parks and then only in designated areas. they do not even allow food to be eaten in your car in an no food area, but there are plenty of nice areas where you can have food.

food for any groups must be prepared by the parks approved caterers. there are a couple of places that say you need to call the park office, so if you want to bring in your own food, either have the wedding for less than 50 people or use one of those sites that allowe you to bring your own.

most of the parks close at sunset, but there are a couple of them that stay open past dark. for the ones that do not, you must have all your stuff out before dark.

here is a list of the parks which have nice beaches on long island.

Gov. alfred e smith/sunken meadow park (this is my favorite. very lovely stretch of beach)

jones beach (busy and popular so you will have crowds to contend with)

robert moses (also busy)

wildwood (more rustic and less busy)

orient beach (another busy spot)

hither hills (more quiet)

mantauk point (wilder spot)

belmont lake (this is not really a beach spot, but there are some lovely places for a wedding along it's shores and they have pretty white swans in the water)

here is the site for more information about all of these spots. after you get into the site, click on the list of parks on the left side of the page and each one will come up with a photo of it. http://www.nysparks.state.ny.us/regions/long-island/permits.aspx

Why are Mexicans attacking Americas are they racist human rights violation can we demand UN sanction Mexico?

I'm gonna

PLAYAS DE ROSARITO, Mexico - Assaults on American tourists have brought hard times to hotels and restaurants that dot Mexican beaches just south of the border from San Diego. Surfers and kayakers are frightened to hit the waters of the northern stretch of Mexico's Baja California peninsula, long popular as a weekend destination for U.S. tourists. Weddings have been canceled. Lobster joints a few steps from the Pacific were almost empty on the usually busy New Year's weekend Americans have long tolerated shakedowns by police who boost salaries by pulling over motorists for alleged traffic violations, and tourists know parts of Baja are a hotbed of drug-related violence. But a handful of attacks since summer by masked, armed bandits â some of whom used flashing lights to appear like police â marks a new extreme that has spooked even longtime visitors.

Lori Hoffman, a San Diego-area emergency room nurse, said she was sexually assaulted Oct. 23 by two masked men in front of her boyfriend, San Diego Surfing Academy owner Pat Weber, who was forced to kneel at gunpoint for 45 minutes. They were at a campground with about 30 tents, some 200 miles south of the border.

The men shot out windows of the couple's trailer and forced their way inside, ransacked the cupboards and left with about $7,000 worth of gear, including computers, video equipment and a guitar.

Bad animal shelters in Palm Beach Florida?

Kathy

I am an absolute animal lover. I want to help save animals that need me but I need some information.
My family and I are hoping to be able to go to animal shelters that mistreat the animals and adopt the ones that are going to be euthanized. I am 17 but I would do most of the work for the animals which is fine with me because I love them so much and because I do school online so I am home all day. I was wondering if I would be allowed to save the animals from being euthanized and then have people adopt them from me. I am not sure how this works so I am doing research before we start doing anything. We hope to move in the next few months and hope to buy a home that has a lot of land for the dogs to run around and a house big enough for the cats to roam comfortably.
We are not rich by any means but I am willing to ask for donations and get a job to help the animals. Do we need to become a non-profit animal shelter legally or can we just save the animals and then have people get them from us?
I also need to know of bad animal shelters in Palm Beach County Florida or near there that I can save the animals from because I know that those animals are going to be the ones that need me the most.

Once I get the animals, if I am allowed to have people adopt them from me, we have a family friend who knows everyone in the city and would help us get loving families to adopt them from us.

One last question: Do you know of any ideas of where I could ask for donations? Can I just ask anywhere and in front of any store or do I need to ask the manager first?

I know that this is a long question but if you guys could help me out with this information I would very much appreciate it and the animals that I save would appreciate it also.

Please help because I am doing research but it is hard to find the info that I need.
Thank you so much for answering the question!
P.S. We would save cats and dogs.

Answer
Wow! You soud like such an amazing inspirational person! The fact that you want to help all these animals in need is brilliant. It's great that you have your parents support in this project as well.

I'm not sure about the legal side of things, but advertizing-wise you could set up a business page on Facebook. Since so many people are on that, you're sure to find some interest. Out of courtesy I would ask the manager of any shop if you could maybe pin up some flyers on a noticeboard or something in the shop. Try setting up a website or blog to talk about your intentions and goals to save the animals and try to get support this way. Once you have it all set up, you could even document the animals progress and stuff, with pictures of who has been adopted and who is in need of adoption. This is a great way to interact with your supporters should this become a major thing.

Posting flyers through people doors, sticking them wherever yu can, parks, on trees haha. ANYWHERE! Also, maybe you could do some fundraising events to raise money and awareness of your project, like parties, cake sales, see if you coud set up a stand in a supermarket or shopping centre or something.

Don't forget though, these animals are going to take up a lot of time, energy and money!!! Think of all the foods, toys, vet bills should anyything happens to an unadopted one, etc. I know you have probably thought of all this, but I feel I've gotta say it haha.

Anyway, all the best!!! I hope I have been some help and really hope this all works out for you! It sounds amaaaazinggg!!!!

Does somebody know any animal shelter in Virginia where you could do community service and your under 16?

sunshine

Answer
All of the animal shelter and rescue places around here, Los Angeles/Long Beach, have volunteer jobs people under 16 can do. They even have a bunny shelter that allows young kids to help. But some places won't allow anyone under 18 to walk the dogs.

Hope you find something!

Please Explain the formation of Fulgurites (no Wiki Answers)?

Duddly

How are Fulgurites formed and what are they.
Please Explain in detail with your sources

Answer
From the NSSL (National Severe Storms Laboratory) FAQ
What is it called when lightning strikes sand and melts it, forming a tube?
Fulgarite. Fulgarite has been found all over the world, but is relatively rare. The color depends on the minerals in the sand that was struck.
http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/primer/lightning/ltg_faq.shtml

FULGURITES are rocks produced by the intense heat of lightning striking the ground. They normally consist of glass, created when the lightning melts the sand and rock, with embedded sand and rock fragments. Due to the rapid heating of the materials making up the fulgurites, they also contain abundant gas pockets that are usually lined with glass.
http://www.gc.maricopa.edu/earthsci/imagearchive/fulgarites.htm

Most people have never seen a fulgurite, and many that have probably did not realize what it was at the time. Fulgurites are natural tubes or crusts of glass formed by the fusion of silica (quartz) sand or rock from a lightning strike. Their shape mimics the path of the lightning bolt as it disperses into the ground.
All lightning strikes that hit the ground are capable of forming fulgurites. A temperature of 1800 degrees Celsius is required to instantaneously melt sand and form a fulgurite (most lightning strikes have a temperature of 2500 degrees Celsius). Fulgurites have been found worldwide, but are relatively rare.
Two types of fulgurites have been recognized: sand and rock fulgurites. Sand fulgurites are the most common and are generally found in beach or desert regions containing clean (free of fine-grained silt or clay), dry sand. They resemble roots or branching tube-like structures that have a rough surface, covered with partially melted sand grains.
Sand fulgurite tubes have a glassy interior, due to rapid cooling and solidification of the sand after the lightning strike. The size and length of a fulgurite depends on the strength of the lightning strike and the thickness of the sand bed. Many sand fulgurites average 1 or 2 inches in diameter and can be up to 30 inches long. Sand fulgurites have been found in Utahâs deserts and on top of some of the higher summits of the Wasatch Range.
Rock fulgurite (circled in white) found on quartzite at the summit of Mount Raymond in the Wasatch Range, Salt Lake County, Utah. Hammer for scale.
Coatings or crusts of glass formed on rocks from a lightning strike are called rock fulgurites. These fulgurites are found as veins or branching channels on a rock surface or lining preexisting fractures within the host rock. Rock fulgurites are primarily found on the top or within several feet of mountain summits.
Mountain peaks are natural lightning rods that are repeatedly blasted by lightning strikes during severe weather. Rock fulgurites can be found throughout many of the mountain ranges of the world, including the French Alps (Mont Blanc), Pyrenees Range, and western U.S. mountains such as the Sierra Nevada, volcanic peaks of the Cascade Range, Rocky Mountains, and Utahâs Wasatch Range.
While hiking in the summer of 2003, I discovered both sand and rock fulgurites on some of the higher summits of the Wasatch Range. I observed very small sand fulgurites (an inch or less) in some of the surface float on top of Mount Raymond (10,241 feet) and Broads Fork West Twin (11,328 feet).
I also found rock fulgurites on top of Mount Raymond, Broads Fork West Twin, Mount Baldy (11,068 feet), and Mount Timpanogos (11,749 feet). Some of the rock fulgurites, such as those found on Mount Timpanogos, are the result of human activity (a steel shelter placed on top of the peak attracts lightning).
In the Wasatch Range, rock fulgurites appear to be confined to mountaintops composed chiefly of quartzite, but summits consisting of other rock types could have them as well.
So, the next time you go hiking or exploring be on the lookout for fulgurites! It is very possible new fulgurite discoveries await the adventurer on many of the higher summits and desert areas of Utah.

Tell me about Sosua, Dominican Republic.?

brocaknows

I'm thinking about heading over there with some friends. Anyone who has been there- are the beaches very crowded? museums, activities, shopping? would you recommend another area? what's the nightlife like? What kind of bars/clubs? What would you say the average age was? Thanks!

Answer
Sosua, located approximately 25 km east of Puerto Plata, and less than 10 km east from Puerto Plata International Airport , is divided into two areas - Los Charamicos (western side) and El Batey (eastern side). Los Charamicos is predominantly occupied by Dominicans who make their living through fishing, tourism jobs or small businesses. El Batey first saw growth in the early 1940's, when an influx of Jewish settlers, escaping Nazi Germany, settled here and developed a dairy industry. Productos Sosua, a producer of dairy products and grocery store chain, is one of the businesses they started that still thrives today. Although many of these settlers moved on, their legacy continues with a small local Jewish community and Synagogue. After this period there was a boom of wealthy Dominicans and Expats whom built beach homes here. The 1970's and 80's saw an influx of tourism to the area, and many hotels, restaurants and shops were built. Over the years since, the town did experience some ups and downs, with pockets of 'sex tourism' earning the area a bit of a seedy reputation. In the last few years, Expats and others who make this town their home, rallied to clean it up and invest in its future. New hotels have been built and tourism has increased to the area. Although the town offers numerous restaurants, bars, activities and 5 beaches to choose from, it's Sosua Beach that amazes most of its visitors. This 1/2 km of beach has beautiful soft, white sand, clear turquoise waters, and sits sheltered in a small cove surrounded by amazing high coral cliffs. Just behind the beach there are plenty of souvenir shops and restaurants vying for your business. This is also where most snorkeling and diving tours depart from. It is close to Puerto Plata and there shopping is the business, museums you have a few. The Jewish Museum, and you have tons of activities. jetskiing, snorkeling, ther is always a merengue party or something going on. It is never a dull moment anywhere. It is on like donkey Kong at night. enjoy.
