We are taking our Daughter to the beach for the 1ST TIME! We are SUPER excited, yet super nervous! She will be 17 months old and she is just everywhere! She never sits still, and she can pitch some tantrums! LOL...She has never been this far away from home (12 hrs) and we are just really nervous! Can you please give me some tips on how to make the trip and the drive easier? Thanks!

Answer
Car DVD player and several of her favorite movies or cartoon DVD's

Take plenty of healthy snacks and drinks for her.

Take beach toys- a pail and shovel, some sand toy molds to make shapes with. Pack a few surprise toys for her during the trip in the car. Check dollar stores for simple little things like a small stuffed animal or something she can play with in the car that won't make a mess. Pull them out every so often and let her have one to keep her entertained and happy on the trip.

Schedule breaks at regular intervals for the potty and just to stretch legs, get a snack etc.. You'd be amazed how pulling off the road for 10 minutes will revive you and keep kids happier in the car!

Lots of sunscreen and one of those little canopy tents to sit in for her or a big umbrella you can all fit under on the beach to protect from the sun.

Another thing with beaches- and I'm assuming it is an ocean beach- be careful about the water. Strong under tows can come in fast and be undetected even from a short wade into the water on the shore. If a little one gets caught by one they can be pulled out far into the water and drown. Be sure someone is holding her hand tight if down by the water and don't let her out of easy grasp for a second.

where is the best place to view the cabrillo beach fireworks in san pedro?

Q. We are new in town, and want to check out this year's fireworks show! Is it better to go right down to the beach? What's the parking situation for such a popular holiday? Are there other places that are less crowded with an equally good view? Any helpful hints would be great. Thanks!

Answer
I live in Long Beach and people start arriving at noon to set up their canopies and tents to watch the fireworks from Bluff Park. They are shot off across the harbor at the Queen Mary. From Bluff Park you can see the San Pedro, Seal Beach and Huntington Beach fireworks. Last year, for some reason, we couldn't hear the booms from the fireworks. Fireworks aren't much fun without the booms.

According to the Cabrillo Beach website there is a free shuttle to watch the fireworks. You can park at 22nd and Miner Street. It is fun to watch the fireworks being shot off over the water. The reflections are very pretty.
