Magic Island is close to the Ala Moana Mall and beach but I want to know if it is worth visiting. Is there a lot of bums around, is it dirty? And another question I have is, what else is there to do around Ala Moana Mall?
Answer
I live in a high-rise at the entrance to Magic Island. As the other respondent said, it is a man-made PENINSULA..originally was going to be a swanky hotel and golf course but the developer ran out of money so the city bought it and added it to Ala Moana Beach Park.
It is a great jogging place, or place to watch and enjoy the views, but no specific concessions, just lawn and trees with a beach at the very tip.
Along the eastern edge facing Waikiki is the best (and $$$) marina for Honolulu, Beautiful sloops, catamarans and motorboats. Most Fridays, the owners come out to sail along the coast before sunset, so if you are into photography you can get some GREAT photos. There are also catamaran clubs that meet here, fun to watch. A famous TV fitness celebrity (Gilad) films here.
The western edge faces the Ala Moana Beach crescent. You can also surf along the outer breakers here.
Magic Island is in its glory on the 4th of July, when spectacular fireworks synchronized to music are launched from the end of the peninsula...considered one of the top 25 fireworks displays in the country. The entire peninsula becomes an instant tent city, with families making a day of it and the smell of teriyaki sauce permeates the air all day...
There are a lot of homeless here. They put all of there belongings behind the sign to the park, and then sleep under the baobob or banyan trees that line Ala Moana Blvd. You should NOT be in the park after dark!

overnight camping at beach with 18 month old?
Princess B
would taking a 18 month old be a safe idea?the weather overnight is in the 50's(f), and we'll be sleeping in a tent on the beach, i would bundle her (obviously) wat r ur opinions?
Answer
I Toodlers take off in an instant. If there are more than 2 people everyone thinks someone else is watching her. Are you bringing a crib? Can she climb out of it? Could she wake during the night and take a walk while you are sleeping soundly since you did so much work unpacking and setting up the tent? Can you keep her away from the fire or barbecue if you have one? Im mentioning these things because so many accidents happen to toddlers on vacation in strange environment to all. I would say it would not be relaxing time but if you can anticipate any possible danger ahead of time and want the extra work, then go for it.
