I am planning a vacation to the East Coast and wanted to camp/ horseback ride on the beaches. Is the outer banks crowded in August? Is it a good place to be camping at? Is there any other advice you can give me or possibly other beaches to camp on along the east coast?
Answer
You won't find a less crowded beach anywhere on the east coast than Hatteras Island of the Outer Banks. You can camp at Oregon Inlet Campground and Frisco Campground operated by the National Park Service (NPS). They are in the National Seashore right on the beach. There are small towns along the Island with private campgrounds, but for the true Outer Banks experience go with the NPS. Other advice, yeah, tie down your tent real good the wind can blow pretty hard down there, even in August. But it will be worth it just for the experience. Heck, the Outer Banks is a place you have to make a special effort to get to, it's way out of the way from anywhere. lol Take the free ferry over to Ocracoke Island while you're there. It's relaxing and hey, it's where Blackbeard used to hang out. Climb the Hatteras lighthouse too. Check out the Chicamacomico lifesaving station in Rodanthe. Don't miss the 'Serandipity'. The 'Nights In Rodanthe' house. Have fun.

going to oregon where is a good campsite on the ocean?

We are driving to oregon. Want to know if there is any good campsites on the ocean? Needs to be for a large tent. Preferably anywhere between lincoln city and seaside.
Answer
Most of the state parks on that part of the coast have nice campgrounds which do a classic balance between being natural against having basic development. The showers have hot water, and there are enough restrooms throughout the campground. There is running water within a few hundred feet of every campsite, and each has a fire ring and a place to park a vehicle.
Don't expect to see the ocean from the campsiteâthere are only a few campgrounds where that's possible and I think they're all south of Florence (such as Tillicum). But the campground is within walking distance of the beach or headlands. OSPRD campgrounds have a variety of campsites, from bicycle/tent camping to large groups (like 50+ people). While you might be lucky just driving in and finding one, on weekends in May a reservation is definitely needed, and especially beginning in June for weekdays. See this list and sort it by region to be of greatest use: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Oregon_state_parks
There are two campgrounds in Newport, and one each near Tillamook, Cannon Beach, Manzanita, and Lincoln City.
If you're more adventurous, it is legal to camp on Oregon's coastal beach provided:
* not adjacent to city limits, and
* not within sight of a house
* not prohibited by signage
* not between Manzanita and the Neahkahnie Mountain (Tillamook County)
* not between Seaside and the Columbia River (Clatsop County)
Actually, I don't see anywhere in the statute the prohibition about being in sight of houses. Perhaps that's common courtesy. Note that nothing says "beach camping is okay". Also, there are frequently restrictions on campfires. Check with local authorities.
