Is there anywhere in southern California that I can directly camp on the beach legally? I see that that there are a variety of camp sites, but I would prefer to be on the beach, and ideally not surronded by other campers. For example if i were to put a tent on San Onofre State Beach and camp there over night would that be legal?

Answer
Unfortunately in most cases the answer is no. The state of california and local jurisdictions don't like the 1960's mindset that thought the beaches should be free and anything goes. There are a couple of state beaches that you can camp pretty close to the beach but all require reservations 6 months in advance during the summer months. You may get lucky during the winter months and find a spot and there are a few first serve campgrounds but they fill up fast on the weekends. I know that San Onofre doesn't allow camping but in the designated sites, besides the beach is on the thin side meaning a good high tide would get you in trouble. Newport dunes a high end RV park used to allow tent camping on it's beach in the back bay that's the only place in so cal I can think of. Good Luck!

Where is a good place in Southern California to go beach camping?

Somewhere where they allow tents on the beach.

Answer
Leo Carrillo State beach. Just outside Malibu. Beautiful. Ocean Caves to explore during low tide. Very early. Flush toilets, showers fire ring, shade, store. Camping is 100 yards from beach.
