...cities and beach resorts?
My wife and I are considering traveling to Thailand and Cambodia. We are more interested in temples and ruins than beaches and shopping, but we are not really backpackers or interested in "rustic" accomodations. Can you describe any experiences, good or bad, that you've had in these countries outside the major cities and resorts? For example, we're wondering about the prevalance of communal bathrooms, mosquito screening, etc., and whether decent (not necessarily fancy) lodging of a somewhat Western standard is generally available.

Answer
Thailand. I've been to Bangkok and Phuket several times, although I've also traveled off the beaten-path a couple times. There are many wats (temples) to see, if that's your area of interest. Thai people are generally friendly and many people speak English fluently. Phuket is mostly a beach resort town, although this area is probably still redeveloping after the huge earthquake and subsequent tsunami. You'll find more interesting sites elsewhere so I would tend to avoid this place.

Bangkok is still a must-see despite being a major metro-area. The Grand Palace is an absolute must. It is quite incredible and I definitely recommend checking it out. There are many other wats in the local area including Wat Pho and Wat Arun. I know you mentioned you weren't interested in shopping, but I enjoyed the weekend market and also the floating market, both of which were very "local" experiences. Chiang-Mai is another destination. It has become more touristy, but still has a lot of character. There are good and fairly inexpensive hotels at both Bangkok and Chiang-Mai.

In most cities in Thailand, there are decent accommodations. If you travel away from the cities, the hotels become scarce and can be quite rustic. Quite a few spots I've seen don't have indoor plumbing and there are only squat toilets. For many people this can be a major turnoff. In public areas, you may have to pay to use the toilets so it's best to carry some Bhat when you are out and about. Overall, cleanliness varies greatly when away from the major cities. Many joints provide mosquito netting since this is a major problem for people with "tasty" blood. Bring repellent regardless of your destination.

Safety is a concern in Bangkok. There are many con-artists, pickpockets and thieves around. Watch your belongings closely! Taxi drivers may also try to rip off tourists. I found it was easiest to have them run the meter rather than barter a price beforehand.

During the summer months, Thailand and SE Asia can become unbearably hot and humid. I found myself quite uncomfortable and often had to seek shade or shelter. Many places aren't air conditioned when you are away from Bangkok.

Cambodia. I've only been to two cities in Cambodia -- Penom Penh and Siem Reap. Siem Reap is undoubtedly worth a look since it is nearby Ankor Wat -- a must see. There were 3 or 4 very nice western style hotels in the surrounding area and there may be more now.

Penom Penh is a big, dirty, crowded city but it's probably still a good destination if you want to soak in some local culture. The cuisine is very delicious and there are several interesting sites here including a haunting tribute to the massacres which occurred in the mid 1970's killing fields. There are many western style hotels here and things are very inexpensive if you hang out where the locals go.

It is a little bit hard to get around Cambodia without the use of a tour guide. Many locals are not fluent. I took motorcycle (scooter) taxis when in Siem Reap to go from the hotel to the markets. There didn't seem to be much in the way of public transportation but I was on a tour with a minibus which took us from place to place. There are TONS of cool temples in and around Siem Reap.

I cannot comment on areas away from Penom Penh or Siem Reap since I have no experience. My experience in those two cities were excellent. Hotels were clean and inexpensive. Bathrooms were private with great air conditioning.

Safety in Cambodia is a concern although not necessarily from thieves or pickpockets. You will have to worry a little if you are in Penom Penh but Siem Reap has other problems. First, there are still landmines in the countryside and therefore you cannot really walk around away from the trails. Second, there are many children begging for money. I didn't feel scared, but this might make some people feel uneasy or unsafe.

Like Thailand, Cambodia is very hot during the summer months. Temperatures can soar to around 40 degrees (in excess of 110F). Bring sunblock and a good hat if you go when it is hot and humid. There are many mosquitoes some of which carry Malaria. Get shots before you go if you are concerned.

Again, like Thailand, many toilets are pay-to-use so carry some Riels when you are out of the hotel. Usually the WC's are filthy and often do not have toilet paper. Be sure to bring your own TP!

I hope this information is useful -- there is much more I could write but time is limited.

What are some of your favorite classic rock songs?

Miss April

90's music doesn't count as 'classic' rock--try to pick ones from the 60's, 70's, or 80's. Also, when I say rock, I mean rock, not necessarily metal (unless the metal song(s) were mainstream enough to be played on classic rock radio stations). I know a pretty decent amount of the hits, so whoever gives the most that I know will recieve best answer I guess. Thanks ahead of time!

Should my mom be trusted with pets?

Kirsty

My mom cant even look after herself or me, let alone a pet. She doesnt have a job, isnt depressed or anything like that and is always stirring trouble with everyone we know. I have had so many pets its crazy. I used to have this cat that was a rescued cat so was bound to have problems. It urinated sometimes because it had come from an abusive home and we were about to move house so she took it back to the shelter after having it for over a year. As soon as we got to this new house, she got another kitten, which was left on its own for the majority of its first two years as i was at school all day and then at after school clubs and my mom just didnt stay in, she was always out. She didn't clean the cats tray and when it was about three months after its last cleaning the cat pee'd in our clothes which my mom just threw anywhere on the second floor, she complained to my grandma about the cats peeing. If the cat scratched her, she tried to poke the cat or hiss at it. At the time i was only around 6. My cat also ate chicken bones from a kfc takeaway we had and the cat got the blame for being 'stupid' She needed to have an operation. At age 11, my mom got me a dog after years of begging. This dog is HUGE, and also overweight but she refuses to take the vets seriously and cannot take him on walks as he is completely out of control. Her only dog as a child was a poodle sp she had no experience. At home, she encourages him to bark and pretends there are people at the front door and encourages him to bark at it while she knocks. She now works and the dog is left alone for eight hours. If he pees she hits him and leaves him in the garden; although he knows hes done wrong because he shakes when you see what hes done. I dont hit my pets though. She doesnt feed them properly either. She used to come home on her work break at 1:00 to feed them so they wouldnt eat their food and poop everywhere. I used to have two budgies. One of them flew out ot the window when she was cleaning. The other we had for a longer amount of time. When we moved house she caught him in a fishing net to get him in the cage. My cat got upstairs and pulled all his tail feathers out and she gave him away when he was 5 to my grandparents. He died within weeks. We also had a fishtank and she didnt clean this either and forbade me doing it because she feared id get an electric shock. The tank wasnt cleaned for three months and the fish died and was just left in there to dissolve. The house if filthy, the cat pees on everything because she doesnt clean the tray and the dog jumps all over the sofa and eats off of our plates and barks at everything. I cant stand it anymore. My mom is very violent especially when criticised about her home. I do everything arounf here. She doesnt work or clean; on benefits. Im 17 and have to go to school, volunteer at animal shelters(i want to be a vet) and try my best to look after my dog, cat and the house. I also cook her meals and clean her clothes. The other day my boyfriend and i were talking about what would happen to the pets when i was gone, my mom started screaming at him and tried to hit me. My boyfriend fended her off
as hes really protective and she threatened to call the police on assault. She hit him in the chest and we have had to stay at my grandmas since. My boyfriend lives with me and tries to help out as much as possible, but he has to work. I'm 17 and i dont know what to do. Does anyone else think my mom is psycho and sorry about my ranting pet life story...

Answer
I don't think she can be trusted with pets at all. They need to be removed. If you can't take care of them you can always call your local humane society and give them an anonymous tip saying she is abusing/neglecting her dog and has a history of doing so to other animals, this will be taken very seriously by the society. Try to find one that has a no kill policy. What area do you live in? Mine in Ottawa is amazing, they are able to get all their dogs and cats adopted within a week after vaccinating and neutering them. Your dog would be put in a foster program first to work out his behavioral problems.

You can also call an agency to come keep an eye on her and help her through her many problems. Google mental institutes or other forms of help in your area. You'll get lots of help. If you get stuck trying to find a resource, research hoarding (your mom has a lot of similar problems to this mental illness) and look at the resources given there. If your mom becomes abusive towards you (as you have described) you can call the police and they'll get her help. There's a possibility that you would be put in the foster system but if your boyfriend's family is clean and suitable as a temporary home for you and you express your preference, I'm sure they'll work with you. There's a lot of help needed in your household so I wish you luck!

Sorry I'm not very helpful with specifics and such, I have no real experience besides logic, dealing with my friend's abusive parents and tv documentaries and research that I do a lot of. Also the fact that I'm only 15 years old.

BTW a good place to start is at your school's guidance counselor they can give you lots of advice or take matters into their own hands. If you don't have a guidance counselor, talk to the principal at your school, they are required by law to help a student if a situation is brought to their attention.

University of Prince Edward Island is a really good place to go for becoming a veterinarian. It's also well priced, the classes are small so you get a lot of one on one time with the teacher and you can walk to the beach/ocean. It's in Canada, not sure of your geographical location.

Building a hut in the mountains?

shelter beach hut
on at the end of the row of historically long established beach huts ...
shelter beach hut image

Johnny

Okay so this might sound weird, but I want to live somewhere in the mountains in a hut, with no one nearby. I want to hunt for my food, and i don't want any kind of electricity, running water, etc. I was just wondering where I could do this, and would i be able to build a hut without owning the land?

Answer
Dude, it is not weird, but what you describing is squatting and is frowned upon by many even the authorities. Here in South Africa we have a special police task force called the "Land Invasion Unit" with the express responsibility to curb this type of activity and forcefully remove anyone from the land they invade or squat on. Squatting here is prevalent, hence I don't think its weird. Many families squat because of poverty, others do so when their circumstances change and there is no way out.

Anyway, hunting for food implies tracking and killing animals. Once again here in South Africa we have wild buck, mountain goats, wildebeest, bison and various other game roaming around at the foot hills of the mountains and if anyone gets caught killing one of these animals, they will go to jail for a long, long time. I can relate an incident that appeared in our local paper of some homeless person grilling his puppy and eating it. The SPCA, Animal Cruelty orgs were all up in arms about this and wanted this man convicted.

However if you became a beach bum (that's what we call them) instead, you would probably survive. These are surfers living on the beach (Jefferey's Bay) taking shelter wherever they can. They catch fish, crayfish and shellfish to eat, and sometimes sell some to make money and surf all day weather permitting. They use the public toilets on the beach and I don't think they ever bother to wash since they practically live in the water. I suppose you could do this anywhere in the world where there are miles and miles of beaches. Should you erect a hut of any kind anywhere without owning the land, that's shouting out loudly "evict me from my hut and throw it down".

The Island Scenario - What are your answers?

Skitter

THE ISLAND SCENARIO
A. Five castaways are stranded on a tropical island with lots of natural wildlife.

B. Within hours of arrival the arguments begin about how to address their situation. Finding that they are not very fond of one another they decide to divide the island into five equal parts and go their separate ways.

C. They all agree to mutually respect these property lines, not to steal from one another, and not to murder or attack one another. In addition to this they agree to mutually prosecute any offenders of this agreement.

D. Soon after four of the five castaways decide to work together for mutual support, one remains isolated. In this group of four, we find a couple of the castaways have watched a few episodes of Survivorman, and another was an Eagle Scout. Together they know how to make basic shelters, start fires, fish and even hunt. Basic survival is no longer in question.

E. After about three or four months the four have gotten into a routine, they have reasonably decent shelters, with enough space to sleep comfortably, and they keep the rain off. They have a bit of fresh meat, fish and fruit. All things considered they are surviving. Then the four realize it has been sometime, possibly a couple of months since they last heard from Castaway Five.

F. Out of concern they go to visit Castaway Five, and are surprised by what they find. Just off the beach, Five has constructed a sturdy hut with three rooms, a patio, shelving, a bed with a matress made from animal hide, and even a chair and footstool, all out of bamboo. There is a tub made of fired clay, with a fire heated water supply to take warm baths. He/She has constructed a water filtration system, has a garden with herbs and vegetables. He/She has supplies of soap, salt, dried herbs, salted meats, tanned hides, cording, a powerful bow, and arrows with bone arrowheads. He/She is eating off of fired and glazed clay plates and has fashioned utensils from wood and bone. He/She has a number of herbal medicines, and even has a lotion with Aloe to deal with sunburn. Castaway Five is not only surviving he/she is thriving.

**********

So here are my questions. There are no right or wrong answers, only your thoughts as an individual, but please explain your answers:

1. What obligations, if any, does Castaway Five have to the others?

2. If Castaway Five refuses to share his/her herbal medicine with the others, despite even an obvious need, has he/she limited their freedom?

3. If Castaway Five is willing to share with Castaway Three, but not the others, has he/she limited their freedom? (Consider this sharing in a way that the others cannot partake in. For example a meal, a little lotion for a sunburn, soap and a bath, or something similar.)

4. Assuming you are one of the castaways, and number three sneaks some of the medicine away because you need it, what will be your reaction?

5. What price is to high for Castaway Five to ask for the goods the others might need/want?

Answer
It took them a couple of MONTHS to remember Castaway 5? What a bunch of selfish a**holes!

Datura

Okay, I moved to VA from OH a few days ago and my mom and dad drove me down here with my 2 cats and some of my stuff. I got mugged like 3 days before I left OH and I lost all forms of id and had to cancel all my credit cards. I paid to have the house furnished and all, the only things I had to do when I got down here were get some paperwork from my husband (he's in training here at Fort Eustis and I moved here to be closer to him), sign my lease and shop for a few things for the house. We drove my mom's car, I paid for the gas, my mom wound up paying for the hotel, and I provided a house for us the rest of the stay and even gave them my bedroom. Well, it's their last day here and my dad has been treating me like shit all day long, we went shopping for a tv and found a really nice one at the thrift store for like 200 (my alternative was to rent one from a rent a center place, which is what I wound up doing), but when I said I thought it was a good idea he jumped completely down my throat and started telling me about how I didn't have the money and all that and I should get a little 65 dollar one that I already have a better version of back in OH and would just wind up throwing away. When I explained this to him he jumped my shit telling me I was being unreasonable and he was just going to leave and I could do it my damn self and started calling me a spoiled ****ing brat so we just came back home. Later on when I needed to go get a tv stand for the one I rented and a bed set he wanted to come along, I told him I had to go to the grocery too, him and my mom are leaving and I will have to take the bus bc I didn't bring my car. Well, we get to Kmart and I found a decent one for about 100, he was supposed to help me buy it bc he knew i didn't have much money left and I have supplied him with everything from food to shelter to smoke (now half my pot is gone too thanks to him but he can go back to ohio and get more- I am quitting smoking when I run out so thanks to him for that one too!) and my mom has bought whatever I haven't. Well, he decides he needs to go out of the store and call about a pizza, but not before he tells me to get the cheap 25 buck stand that my cats will jump up on and cost me 2,500 bucks to replace the tv that will be on it. So I wound up just getting the bed stuff and leaving, I was starting not to feel well any way (as of right now me and my husband are trying to have a baby and I am not sure whether we were successful or not but we gave it the good ol college try and I've felt like hell for the last 2 weeks, I go to the dr next week) and realized I hadn't eaten all day but I was so sick to my stomach I really needed to go home. Well, my dad says he wants to go by the pizza place, not just any place either- the one that is like10 miles in the opposite direction of my house and we were already 10 miles away from my house. Well, I just flat out told him what was going on and that I was going home and I kept waiting for him to pull up the nav system for me but he was taking forever and I was feeling worse. So I started going back the way I came, I remembered it up until about halfway- which was when he got the nav system going. So it told me to turn around and I was worried I had went the wrong way so I listened to it, reeeaaaaaalllllly needing to get back home by now. So 20 minutes later I see the destination, it says arriving at Dino's pizza place on right! Turns out I had made it halfway back to my house when he re-routed us out of the city and halfway to the beach. I was about to murder him and told him I couldn't believe he would do that to me and not even say anything and I didn't know why he even came, the mother ****ing pizza place was closed and any other pizza place that is at least in the same Buddahdamn city ****ing delivers! So I was on the phone with my husband for all of 2 seconds despite how badly I needed to talk to him, not only for emotional support but business reasons as well. I ran down the rest of the battery in my phone using the nav system, ran out of gas, had to stop at 3 different places on the way to get my mom food and a pop and he was on the cell phone that I pay for him to have, calling the airlines and looking up plane tickets home.
When we finally got back to my house he made an even bigger scene, getting his bags out to the car (screaming at me from my front door for my new neighbors to hear) and saying he was going to sleep in the car. I told him to quit acting like that and get inside and go the **** to bed. When he did come back in it was to get his dog and upset my mom even more, poor thing was just stuck with this like I was, and started calling me a cunt and a dope addict and shit and yelling it nonetheless, so the neighbors could hear that too. He was in the house by this point and I wasn't even in the living room I was off in my bedroom but I came flying out for that one.
The dope
addict thing? Well, I'm all hopped up on prenatal vitamins sooo I know aaaaalllll about addiction! LMFAO! Basically, he was drunk, on a few pills and acted like a total douche and then my mom made me let him into my house to stay the night still. What do I do? I am sick of his drunk bs and she is an enabler, no matter how much I love her.

Can I use a pop up tent on Waikiki beach?

best beach pop up tents image

Ai_22192

The size of tent is good for 2 adults, basically use only for sun shelter and not the zip up camping kind of tent.
For those who wonder why I ask such a question, it is because we used a pop up tent on Virginia beach only to be told that it is prohibited and have to take are tent down immediately.

Answer
Yeah, no tent allowed at Waikiki, cause block eva body view, and can't stay onna beach ova nite, ok? But you can bring umbrella, or can rent from Beach Boy rental or Star rental rite on Waikiki or Kuhio Beach, they rite close to each otha, so same beach really, ok? Also, lotta good shade from Palm trees, so maybe not even need umbrella, ok?
Peace and aloha to you!

Essentails to take camping at the beach?

BrooklynBa

We are going to a place that is right on the beach, we will be in tents & are able to have a fire etc. Apart from the obvious - tents, blankets and stuff, whats some other things i shouldnt forget?
Thanks!

Answer
Well Stakes are going to be useless if you are camping on the beach since they will pull right out of the sand. Your best bet is to get cheap small aluminum pie pans from the supermarket. Pop a hole in the middle of it and pass a string through it and tie a knot then tie the other end of the string to the corner of your tent and bury it. It`ll be hard to pull out of the ground since it has such a great surface area. Agains stakes are useless and you wouldnt need a hammer to slip them into the sand.

Also, I wouldn`t worry about a ground cloth for the tent because sand has excellent drainage, ever been to a beach after a storm and seen puddles? Aside from the puddles caused by the waves. If you improperly setup the ground cloth, i.e have it sticking out from under the tent then it will actually collect rainwater and you`ll end up swimmin in your tent.
I`m assuming you`ll be camping out of your car so weight and amount of gear probably isnt an issue. I would bring at least 2 good size poles (say 8 foot long) to use to setup a tarp. Put the 2 poles at opposite ends of the tarp at the middle grommet, stake down the corners and you`ll have a decent "A" tarp setup. Dig down about 2 feet and bury the poles to give them more stability and again use the pie pans as anchors. You can use 4 poles to put on each corner of the tarp or put 2 poles on the front corners and 2 poles at the middle grommet and stake out the back end of the tarp for a leanto style tarp. This isnt so much for rain as it is for shade. There`s nothing like getting out of the sun after being on the beach all day long.

Baby Powder is also good to have, it`ll help keep you dry when you`ve been walking around in a wet bathing suit all weekend.

Bug Spray, sand flees biting at your ankles and the no-seeums could ruin a weekend beach trip

How to transform yourself over the summer?

Chloe

I'm moving into Year 9 this year, and i really want to make an impression on the first day back. I need to get to grips with EVERYTHING this summer: friends, schoolwork, future plans, boys, socialising, being creative, hair, make up, clothes... Argh! So how should i plan my summer?

Answer
I'm doing the same thing this summer! Here's my advice:

Friends/Socializing: Hang out with your friends during the summer so that you guys stay friends. If you're a little on the shyer side, try and use the summer to work on your social skills and make a couple new friends. Have sleepovers, go to the beach, go to parties, dances, etc. Be social and try and break out of your shell. Get out of your comfort zone and have fun!

Hair: Summer is the time to experiment! Try new things with your hair - cut it short, grow it out, dip-dye it, highlight it, get streaks, dye it with Kool-Aide, and experiment with different styles. Do some research online or look in magazines or just at the people around you to see which hairstyles you like. Practice them, and look up some tutorials online if you're not sure how to do them. After practicing your favourite styles and seeing what looks best on you, you'll be ready to do them in the mornings at school without taking up tons of time. Also, find products that make your hair look great. If you have straight "boring hair, try a volumizing spray. If you have frizzy hair, try a deep-conditioner. If you have "wild" curly hair, try a cream that helps curls look defined, but not wild. Find products that suit your hair type.

Makeup: Same as hair - use summer to experiment. Practice applying different things, see which colours look good on you, find out which colours make your eyes pop and which to avoid. Have a makeup day with your friends where you practice doing each other's makeup. Give your opinions on what looks good and what doesn't, that way you'll know now instead of on the first day of school.

Clothes: Go on a few shopping sprees! Look through magazines, online, or at people around you and see which styles of clothing you love. Write them down, take pictures, and then go out and find similar styles in the stores. Go through your current clothes and donate old clothes that don't fit you or that you don't like - no use weighing down your wardrobe with things you'll never wear. Figure out what items of clothing you have enough of and need more of. This is also a good time to make sure that your bra still fits. Measure yourself or get yourself fitted to make sure that "the girls" look good too. :-)

Schoolwork: If you really want to be ahead of the game, review concepts from last year a week or so before school starts. This will give your brain a head start and you'll be able to get through those first few classes a lot easier. Find ways to organize yourself for next year - get homework folders, agendas/planners to write down your assignments, get file folders, etc. If you're bad at procrastinating with your work, once you go back do your homework the day you get it, right when you get home from school to avoid late-night homework sessions and stress. Also, figure out how to study for tests and quizzes, and take online tests to see what kind of a learner you are (Visual/Verbal, Hands-On, etc.) Once you know your learning "style" you can figure out how to best prepare for tests (ie. flash cards, group study sessions, etc.)

Future Plans: This is a great time to go out and try new things. Lots of people are unsure of their future job/university plans because they're not sure what things interest them, so get out there and try new things. Like animals? Volunteer or apply to work at an animal shelter. Like sports? Get a job as a lifeguard, a referee, or a coach. Like to be creative? Take some art classes in different mediums; sketching, painting, pottery, photography, etc. Find something that interests you, and that way you'll have a better idea of what things you'd like to study in college/university and eventually persue as a career. Do some research on colleges/universities that interest you and learn about them. Find out what grades you need to get in, so you can start preparing for them now.

Being creative: Find out what interests you. Like I said above, take art classes. Also try photography, writing, blogging, or writing your own music. Learn to play an instrument and record covers of your favourite songs. Re-decorate your room using DIY stuff (look up some ideas online). Make your own jewelry, paint ceramics, sew something (a bag, clothes, etc.), knit something, or crochet something. Get a video camera (or a digital camera with a video setting) and make some movies/music videos with your friends. Once you've found something that you love, keep doing it, and have fun with it!

Boys: Guys love confident, happy girls that share their interests. Go to the beach or a party with your friends and flirt with some guys there, or use the summer to get up the nerve to talk to that guy at school that you have a crush on. :-)

Sorry that it's so long! Good luck!

Can I use a pop up tent on Waikiki beach?

beach shelter tent pop up

beach shelter tent pop up image

Tent Camping on the Beach?

Luo

Has anyone ever camped on the beach?
I am considering taking the kids up to Lake Erie to camp on the beach there.
I don't have a "special" beach tent. I want to use my smaller nylon dome tent.
Will I have trouble with this?

Answer
Do not need any "special tent". We are using a 2 man pop up camping tent(link below) and it work well for beach camping.Wind can and will be a problem. We actuall had one of those canopies get away from us in some high winds at the beach , but that was just a daytime setup. I imagine the wind gets pretty rough there, unless you can get back and out of it somehow. if there{s a lot of night wind the tarps can get pretty noisy. Try to find a sheltered are if there is any. But beach camping is great fun and pretty comfortable. You might need to empty the tent and shake out excess sand every day or two though. Night time may not be so bad though.

How walkable is San Diego in terms of finding things to do?

beach shelter price
on ... Rio Portable Beach Shelter RIB017 - Reviews & Prices @ Yahoo Shopping
beach shelter price image

Brad

I will be going out there Fri June 29th - Tuesday July 1st...I will be staying in downtown...I'm wondering, is the zoo, Petco Park (baseball stadium), shopping, and other things in walkable distance like San Francisco? I don't mind walking, as long as it's pretty scenery and of course safe....

Also, are the beaches far from downtown? Can somebody please provide some imagery of San Diego for a tourist without a vehicle? Thanks :-)

Answer
Of course, a lot depends on what you mean by a walk.

It's been a while since I've done it, but my guess is that the zoo and Balboa Park is a good four to five miles from the general downtown area.

You can walk up Fifth Avenue, away from the downtown area, to Laurel, turn right, and head into Balboa Park which, in addition to the Zoo, features several interesting museums, and the Prado, not a bad place to have lunch/dinner.

Depending on where your hotel room is located, it should be a nice easy walk to the Gaslamp, with interesting antique and other stores and many restaurants/bars/clubs, and to Petco Park.

Also, if you head out of your hotel towards Harbor Drive, it should be a nice easy walk to Seaport Village, a small collection of shops, nice touristy feeling.

Once you are in Seaport Village, if you look to your left, while facing the water, you will see the Hyatt Hotel. You have to try the top of the Hyatt, for great views of San Diego and reasonably priced drinks and appetizers.

There is a walkway between Seaport Village and the water. If you head to the right (while facing the water) and walk a mile or so, you will be around the Broadway Pier.

There, you can catch a boat to Coronado Island, which lands at a small, but interesting shopping center. There is a pathway around there which when taken in one direction leads to a nice park. From the shopping center, you can go in the other direction to Orange Avenue and head away from the water. In about two miles or so, you will come to the Hotel Del Coronado and a great, long, wide sandy beach.

Now, back to Broadway. If you continue walking in the same direction for another three miles or so, you will come to a place clearly marked when you can take a two and a half mile detour around Harbor Island. Nice view, but mostly hotels and restaurants.

But go straight another two miles or so, turn left on Scott Street and walk a half mile to Point Loma Seafood, great spot, known mostly to locals. Continue on Scott to Shelter Island Drive and turn left to take a walking tour of about two and a half miles round trip around Shelter Island...nice views, mostly hotels and restaurants and boat yards.

Standing on Harbor Drive, before you turn left on Scott, you are still a good three miles away from Ocean Beach, and probably five to six miles away from Mission Beach.

I'm not familiar with buses in San Diego, but you should be easily able to catch a bus from downtown to, say, Belmont Park.

Once you are there, there is great walking on the "board walk"...to your left, down to the breakwater, about a mile, and to your right a good two miles to Crystal Pier, and another mile or so to the end of the board walk.

This is a great area, one of my favorites to walk, good scenery, good places to stop and have a drink, choices between selecting crowded beach with good people watching, and more isolated spaces.

I don't know if this helps.

But good luck.

How much did you pay for your adopted rabbit?

horses

I just want like a general price for rabbits at shelters.

Answer
I just got mine at the SPCA in Virginia Beach yesterday. He was already neutered when he got there so i only paid $15 for him. If the SPCA has to neuter/spay it when it arrives it costs $35 to adopt. Please don't adopt from a pet store, there are so many good, healthy animals that need your help.

Hi. I live in san diego, near UCSD
i`d like to goto pier for fishing.
but it will be better, i could do at night time also.
and not to far. (like in 10miles?)
anybody has idea?

*reason i like to go to pier, it`s because i don`t need licence for fishing.

thank you.

Answer
from ucsd, the piers closest to it that come to mind include the scripps pier, which i dont know if it can be used for fishing, but it's right down the street from ucsd at la jolla shores. if you cant fish there, another close pier that comes to mind is the one in pacific beach, u know, the one with houses on it. haha... if that doesnt work out, a few more miles to the south and you hit the ocean beach pier.

if none of those work out, there are many piers near the downtown area including the marina, which is behind the convention center. or you can try shelter island near point loma, off of harbor drive.

some good south bay piers include imperial beach and there's one off of J street in chula vista but i dont recommend it at all...

Affordable anniversary vacation?

Sparkley S

My hubby and I are looking to go on a short trip, Friday-Monday, for our one year anniversary, this July. The only issue for us is cost. We honeymooned in the Dominican Rep., which was amazing, but we can't afford another trip like that right away. He is in grad school, and I just graduated, so we are on quite a tight budget. Can anyone reccomend a fun, yet affordable place to spend our weekend? Ideally somewhere near a beach? Thanks :)

Answer
I don't know where you live, but here are some options. A bed and breakfast is a cheaper option than a resort, and often it feels homier. Plus, with less of the budget going towards shelter, you can spend more money on activities.

1. Anniversary Specials at Beach Bed and Breakfast. St. Simons Island, GA - $1,200.00 - $1,500.00. Very nice, resort-like. www.beachbedandbreakfast.com/

2. Elsbree Beach Area Bed and Breakfast. San Diego, CA. $150 a night. 1/2 block from the beach!!! http://www.bbinob.com/index.html

3. The Blue Water House. Lewes, Delaware. 1 and 1/2 block walk to the beach. $190 - $215 a night. Beautiful coast! http://www.lewes-beach.com/

Hope this helps!

Personally, I love Maui. Not only because it is my home, but because it is the right size and has a lot of diverse landscapes. We have the rainforest, volcanoe crater, wetlands, valleys, and mountains, and white sand and black sand beaches. And it only takes 2 &1/2 hours at the most to get to places. I wouldn't say it is too overcrowded yet. And we have just enough tourists for locals to live on a comfortable income.

Answer
I live on all the islands but I do love Maui I only like Hana that is the magic area. I really didnât like the rest of the island well north shore of Maui is alright it was way to humid and dry for me, I live there for like 4 months but the cost of gas prices and groceries wow. I am very lucky and fortunate to live in Oahu now, There is so much to do, Am lucky enough to live on the tropical side of Oahu. And the reason why I like Oahu so much is,
If I feel like city life and the mood to go shopping I go down south. If I feel like dessert side and want to motorcross I go west, if I want tropical and surf I go north. I love pipeline. If I feel like mountainside go east and there is shopping there to. I can go to the movie theater for a $1.00 at restaurant row, I know where are all the best hidden local spots and snorkel spots are and there is a best buy here I have access to any electronic CD or DVD I want. If my car breaks down they have the best bus transportation. There are plenty of jobs here and if I need to get away from the crowds I can always go see any island I want for 20.00 and I get free shelter cuz I have friends all over the islands. When I get bored of the islands I go to California and go to magic mountain and Disneyland. And sometimes to Colorado to snowboard. But every island does have there own beauty. I am going to move away from the islands one day I am planning on moving to Cape Town South Africa.

Are there any calm beaches near the north shore in the winter months?

Steve

Staying at Turtle Bay... I know the waves there will be big, wondering the closest beach thats good for swimming, with low waves. I will have a car so can drive a bit. Any suggestions?

Answer
Malaekahana State Park is sheltered by an outer reef so it is usually very calm. It has a beautiful beach (see the URL below) which has very few people. I was just there several days ago and it was great. Goat Island is about 200 feet offshore and has two small secluded beaches. The water is shallow enough to wade out to.

http://www.hawaiigaga.com/oahu/beaches/malaekahana-state-park.aspx

When you drive in to the parking area go all the way to the end then walk out of the end of the parking lot. There is a bathroom and a lot of picnic tables. Just beyond those is a long beach.

You can do a Google Images search for "Malaekahana" and get many more pictures.

Shark's Cove has a very sheltered area for snorkeling but the water is only about three feet deep. The open area of the cove gets large waves in the winter and can be dangerous.

Check with the concierge at Turtle Bay for more up-to-date information.

------------------------
January 23, 2010 UPDATE
To show you how variable the surf is in the winter, this morning the surf is down. Sunset Beach is 2 - 3 feet. Pipeline is 1 - 3 feet. The Volcom Pipeline Pro surf meet was cancelled. This means you can basically swim anyplace. Again, check with the concierge at the hotel for the latest conditions.

Also, when you get to the beach, look for the lifeguard towers. Ask what the conditions are and if there are any problems. Sometimes there can be currents that are not obvious.

Where can I buy extra long tent stakes for beach camping?

beach dream shelter
on Seaside Shelter Stock Image - Image: 26643831
beach dream shelter image

Glenn Beck

Some friends and I are camping at on the beach this summer. Every guide I've read about beach camping says that we must get extra long stakes because of the sand. I'm having a hard time finding these - does anyone know a good store to buy them at, or what terminology I should use to search for them online?

Thanks!

Answer
You need curved or v section pegs, not the straight rod type unless they are very long ....and then you find a rock buried eight inches down just where you're knocking the peg in. Beaches do that deliberate..
If you can find some pegs with a saw-tooth edge, even better.
You can get thick plastic ones like that or straight-edged, quite cheaply, or wide alloy pegs fairly cheap or stainless steel, even titanium...very expensive for those..
Wide pegs can be shorter than thin ones and then you get still more grip in the sand without having to go very deep.
Another trick is to put heavy rocks over the pegs. Bang or push the pegs right in to the sand so they're flush, and use big hopefully flattish rocks so they don't tip or roll, to put some weight on them. Same on snow. Pile some rocks over the pegs and build a bank of snow along the sides and back of the tent for better stability. Some tents have snow valances for doing that...very handy.
You can also use boulders to tie onto, scooping sand out from the base to get low. Sometimes handy for one peg at least to get a good fix in one corner and use the boulder for shelter or privacy. Put the cord through the peg loop and right round the boulder, then tighten up and tie it off. Put the sand over again and you've got a low fixing without using a peg.
Of course sands vary like soils vary. On the west coast of Denmark we drove a convoy of big Army trucks right along the beach for twenty miles on the hard sand ....as good as a road.
Even cycling on it on holiday later was a dream....not hard going at all..
Normal pegs were fine in it too.
Here are some sand and snow stakes...a lot of companies make similar ones.

How do i get over mild depression and help me interpret my dreams.?

ed

Depression has been following me since elementary school. Its on and off, but its been getting progressively worse even though my life has been getting easier and better. I live in a wealthy house. I have good friends but i feel like i lack happiness with everything i do. Every morning i feel sad like the world around me is so fake. And lve been having strange reoccuring dreams for the past 2 years. This one dream i keep seeing is this dark place with nothing around except for this one dark tree. As i go towards it, my teeth fall out and i can never get close enough to the tree. And the other dreams, i have stopped dreaming about people. I just dont know why i feel so empty. I have a wonderful life many people would kill for yet i am ungrateful for everything. And i started to feel much displeasure when people talk to me. I dont need a therapist nor do i need medication. I want to hear your stories and how u got over your depression. I am lost but i want to discover my own solution through others.

Answer
Hi Ed,

I was on some medication that gave me depression. I really hated myself, and felt like I was just a burden on everyone around me. At times I would feel as though an emotion belonged in me, but I couldn't identify one. Like you mentioned, I have nothing I can complain about in my life, but it seemed as though I had nothing to look forward to either. I still feel very cynical, like everyone is just out to do bad things and that life is insignificant, and negative, like happiness can't last and that I'm not going to get anywhere in life. I can't control my tears and I cry even when I'm not sad. I got through the really rough parts by knowing that there are people who really care about me, and would be devastated if anything happened to me. Volunteering and doing good deeds makes me feel as though my life is purposeful and worth living. I don't know what kinds of volunteer opportunities are available to you, but I highly recommend finding a position where you can directly see the good effects of what you are doing. Offer to shovel a neighbor's driveway or volunteer at the animal shelter or a children's fun fair. Do things that make you happy. For me that's going to the beach or singing when nobody's around. Sometimes keeping a diary helps you realize what you are feeling.

As for your dream, I'm not an expert but here's how an online source interprets it:
"To see bare trees in your dream indicate used up energy. You have put your all into some relationship or project and now you are exhausted. Perhaps you are even feeling depressed. Alternatively, the dream signifies the cycle of life or the passage of time. To see a withered or dead tree in your dream indicates that your hopes and desires have been dashed. You are experiencing some instability and setback in your life."
As for your teeth, the dream can mean you are anxious about how people see you. It can also mean you are embarrassed or worried or lacking self-confidence.
Surprisingly, it is actually common to dream that your teeth are falling out.

Best of luck Ed, I hope you are able to get yourself feeling whole again, and able to enjoy life like you deserve to :)

is it legal/safe to camp on the beach in myrtle beach?

Answer
Sort of:

If you're camping in a designated campground then yes, you can camp on the beach (almost). Apache, Ocean Lakes, PirateLand, Myrtle Beach State Park, etc... although, technically, the tent spaces at none of these is east of the dunes. You'd get wet at high tide and your tent would wash away.

Then too, from an experienced (by order of the military) camper; you'd not want to camp on the beach. There are all sorts of really good reasons to be at least 300 yards inland and in a tree line. Not the least are the sand critters that would snack on you but also the winds that whip up and sandblast you or blow your gear away. All of your food would become sand-filled. If a storm came up you'd have no protection. And, most important, IT'S HOT! We had a heat index of 120 here two days ago on the beach - can you imagine what a tent felt like? You need to camp in the tree line.

On public beaches there's a city ordinance that not only can you not camp there - you can't sleep there on your beach towel between 9PM and sunrise either. http://www.myrtlebeach.com/site/pages/myrtle-beach-laws/#11

Safe? I'd think definitely not in a public place. No more safe than sleeping on a park bench or in a KMart parking lot in the open. It'd be a good way to get washed to sea at high tide (ok, you'd really just wake up wet) and would be a clear invitation to the 'bad guys' that you would like to be robbed, beaten, abducted, etc... since you're not sleeping anywhere that has any safety/security at all.

You might make some new homeless friends though who could show you the ropes of being homeless and which wooded lots are best to sleep in.

If you want to camp here - spend the money for a decent campground site. If you're cheap, stay at a state park (we have two on the beach) in a tent site.

Answer
Sorry, Melanie. No, they aren't allowed on the beach. Only the big ones, for a wedding or big parties. I hope you'll have a great time, just the same.

Are there any beaches in orange county ca that allows you to pitch a tent?

not to stay overnight but just for the day?

Answer
Many beaches have regulations against tents. Canopies are generally fine, but anything with sides on it is often prohibited on the beach. The previous poster is incorrect.

Such rules came about so that all may enjoy a view of the water. Also, people were using tents for illicit activities.

What are some really good weekend vacation spots in Georgia, USA?

Scarlett

My boyfriend is a college student and i am graduating high school in 3 weeks. This summer we're planning on going on a vacation together, but obviously it's gotta be really affordable. So we want to be frugal but still have a great time.
Is St. Simons Islands as calm as daytona beach in fl?
I've heard about places like blue ridge, helen, and barnsley gardens but i've never really been anywhere in georgia for vacations.
Need all suggestions!!

Answer
-Fifth Best Vacation Spot in Georgia- Atlanta

Atlanta is certainly the most visited city in Georgia thanks to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Of course this sprawling capital city has much to offer. Fun activities for families and children include Six Flags Over Georgia, the Georgia Aquarium, and Zoo Atlanta. The artsy crowd will enjoy the High Museum of Art, the Fox Theatre, and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. If live events are what you seek, plenty can be found at the Georgia Dome, Aaron's Amphitheatre at Lakewood, and Philips Arena. Sports fans lace up for the Atlanta Hawks, the Atlanta Braves, the Atlanta Falcons, the Atlanta Thrashers, and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Lastly, make a conscious effort to visit Stone Mountain Park's night time laser show and sneak over to nearby Athens Georgia's Sanford Stadium, the home of the Georgia Bulldogs.

-Fourth Best Vacation Spot in Georgia - Lake Oconee

About an hour east of Atlanta rests Lake Oconee, Georgia's best kept secret. Of course Lake Oconee boasts excellent fishing, boating, and water sports. There you will can also enjoy seven of the world's finest golf courses designed by the likes of Jack Nicholas and Ben Crenshaw. Fine dining and world class pampering can be found at the Ritz Carlton Lodge at Reynolds Plantation where several of these golf courses are hidden. This quiet lake community comes alive every year when the entire golf world turns its eyes to Augusta, Georgia for the Masters golf tournament.

-Third Best Vacation Spot in Georgia - Cumberland Island

A trip to Cumberland Island is not an event that can be described in words, rather an encounter that must be experienced. First one must board the Cumberland Island Ferry in mainland St. Mary's, Georgia. Once on Cumberland, you will soak in the best unspoiled scenery that nature has to offer. Sprawling, giant live oaks adorned with Spanish moss provide shelter to low lying palmettos. As you move further away from the mainland you will find the ruins of Nathaniel Greene's home and a myriad of wildlife including turkey, deer, and alligators. Further we go and approach undisturbed beaches where wild horses roam. No high rise hotels. Just you and nature the way it was intended. Don't forget to bring food and water for your excursion and camping on the island is available. Once you return to the mainland St. Mary's has everything you need.

-Second Best Vacation Spot in Georgia - North Georgia Mountains

North Georgia is decorated with the spirited Blue Ridge Mountains. Visit fantastic shops in fabulous towns like Ellijay, Blue Ridge, Dahlonega, and Helen. Of course there are scenic log cabins everywhere you turn available for rent year round. Here you can also hike the Appalachian Trail which begins in Springer Mountain, Georgia and ends in Mount Katahdin, Main.e. Don't miss Chateau Elan in Braselton, Georgia and experience world class spa treatment, golf, dining, lodging, and winery. One can truly find peace and relaxation in this enchanted region.

-The Best Vacation Spot in Georgia - Savannah/ Tybee Island, Georgia

Savannah and Tybee Island, Georgia are a remarkable combination of fun, relaxation, and scenery.

Start your day with a scenic drive out to Tybee Island. Spend the day in the sun on Tybee's beaches and mingle with the very friendly locals. At dusk, stop by the Crab Shack on your way back in. It's "Where the elite eat in their bare feet!". Once back in Savannah, take stroll down the cobblestoned River Street which houses night clubs, restaurants, and gift shops. There will also be plenty of live music and street performers as you watch the moon gleam on the Savannah River. Make sure you stop at Wet Willie's for a frozen treat. Beauty, atmosphere, and culture make Savannah and Tybee Island the best vacation spot in Georgia.

Where are some great places to travel over the summer?

S Son

My girlfriend and I wanted to travel and I've been trying to come up with locations we could visit. In terms of expenses, I'm from northern california, currently have about $2000 saved up, my small toyota echo for transportation and a tent for a possible shelter.

Answer
If I were you I would go to Bodrum. It has lovely, long, clean and hot beaches, sun, clear sea, surf and other water sport opportunities, scenic beauties, water parks, luxury and budget friendly hotels, a lot of British, American and German tourists who can be friends with you, great night life, a lot of historical places, traditional bath, traditional food, traditional music, traditional dance etc and itâs cheaper than the holiday resorts of other European countries.

You may watch videos and find useful info about Bodrum, Mugla at http://magnificentturkey.weebly.com/site_map.html#mugla

They don't list adoption cost on their website, so your best bet it to either call them up or email them. Here is the website. http://www.sbacc.org/Default.asp

How do I go about getting funding to open a shelter for battered women?

tweety1015

I moved to Myrtle Beach 2 years ago and the domestic violence here is horrible and going through it myself I need to help. There is no help for victims here and the legal system is a joke.

Answer
The easiest way to start one is to go to the nearest Womens Refuge group which is currently open (could be a couple of hundred miles away) and ask them to assist you by forming a subgroup. They could then sponsor you to the various funders and other social groups as well as being able to advise you on probable policies and pitfalls.

MiniHL

The vet i went to said it was around 500 dollars.. Is this average?

Answer
Different areas, different prices. Veterinary clinics are a neighborhood business. If you go to a ritzy neighborhood, you will pay ritzy prices. If you go to a blue collar neighborhood, you will most likely pay less. Call around, take notes on who charges what.

Sick pets need vets and you may find yourself in a
position of finding a new one. If you are a first
time pet owner or have moved to a new area you
might want a little help finding that vet, before you
need that vet. Get recommendations from friends or
neighbors that have pets. Find out why they like the
vet they use. Ask at the local dog park or beach. Look
them up online, see if you can find reviews. Visit the
places recommended, see for yourself what the place
is like. Is the place clean, odor free? Is the staff
attentive? How do they relate to the animals? Before
going make a list of questions you will want to ask so
you don't forget. 1-How long have you been in practice?
2- How many vets are on staff here? 3- Will the same
vet see my pet each time or will I get a different vet
without notice? 4- How long have the other vets been
in practice? 4- What are your emergency procedures
during business hours? After business hours? Arrange
for a tour. Ask their procedure in case of an emergency
during business hours and during off business hours.
One thing I would not ask a vet about is to recommend
a pet food. Vets, for the most part, are not nutritionalists.
They will generally recommend what ever brand of food
they stock and it is not necessarily a good quality food.
Please, research your pets food! If possible meet the vet(s).
You want a vet, and staff, you feel comfortable with and
confident about. When you go for that first appointment
does the Doctor listen to what you have to say? Does the
vet answer the questions you ask. Does he/she explain
things to your satisfaction, understanding? How does the
vet talk to your pet? Does the vet use your pets name?
Also you should communicate your expectations to the
doctor. If you want the vet to do what he/she feels
necessary to find the problem, tests, ex-rays, say so. If
you are on a tight budget, say so. The vet should know
whether or not you can afford that MRI that can run a
couple of thousand dollars.

If you need a specialist and have not yet found a vet you
trust to give you a referral call the VMA
(veterinary medical association) for a specialist referral in
your area. Or look the VMA up on line and check out
their list.

If you need low cost vet care, if that is your primary
concern there is hope. When it comes to your pets
health you want the best possible care. If low cost is
the best possible you can do there is a way to find it.
1-Start with your local Humane Society or local animal
shelters. They are probably working with vets that
charge a reasonable fee. Some will even let you bring
your pet to them for a low cost spay/neuter.
2-Vet offices are neighborhood businesses. If you find
a vet in an upper class neighborhood, expect to pay
premium prices. If you find a vets office in a poor
neighborhood the prices will most likely be lower.
3-Pick up the yellow pages and the phone. Have a pad
and paper to keep track of who you call and their answer.
Call vet offices and ask two questions. How much do you
charge for a spay on a 40 pound dog? How much do you
charge for a general exam? Those two questions will
probably tell you who is the most reasonable.

You can also do an engine search on who does low cost spay & neuter in your area.

where can i find a cheap dog at los angelas or long beach?(any kind)?

i am looking for any dog that is small and cute.and that has fur that isn't known as being ferocious.
im looking to adopt

Answer
http://petfinder.com/

Rescue one from a shelter or rescue. They are a couple hundred $$, but remember, they come already fixed, potty trained, UTD on shots, etc. That's much cheaper than getting a free one and paying for a spay/neuter and vaccinations all right off the bat.

As for having $2,500 on hand, like another poster suggested, very few people are wealthy. Most are blue collar workers, so in case of emergency, get a credit card, or you can get payday loans for emergencies and so forth.

What should I do for my 13th birthday?

beach boys shelter
on That's Why God Made the Radio by The Beach Boys on Spotify
beach boys shelter image
Q. I'm turning 13 soon and I don't really know what I should do. I want there to be boys and girls. My house is pretty small so I wanted to rent a "shelter" and the park down the street from my house. Although, as far as all of that goes I don't really know what else to do.

Answer
⢠hawaiian Theme!!!!
for girlzz they can have the option of wearing a grass skirt or coconut bra x]
and for the guys. a tropical hawaiian shirt with shorts. For both sandals or any shoes really. but most defiantly buy leia'z for them when they come!! also have some tropical fruits. Blown palm treez or whatever. Hawaiian music. Uhm.. hmm.. and anything tropical :D

⢠Mask Theme
Your guests have to wear masks. Girlz have to wear fancy dresses. Guys can wear a tuxedo or anything else fancy. You can have it at a fancy restraunt or some place fancy ( can be your home but make shure you make it fancy) you then can ( if you can afford) rent a limo and come to where you guests are. they see you come out like your famous xD haha and have a blast!! you can serve awesome food .. And a great delicious cake!!!

⢠Do a black and white masked ball. Rent a large room decorate in black and white w/ red accents. Guess wear black or white gowns. Guys in tuxes. Lot's of white lights, candles and roses.

⢠The beach!! have a beach party! swim, have a bbq, and dance, and music, and have a dance contest!! winner gets something xD and in the water 2 girls can sit on 2 girls/guys shoulders and the girls on top have to try to knock eachother down xD its so much funz!!!!!

⢠Horror partyy.. Make sure its dark in your house. but have some candles so its gona be kinda creepy. Then You guys can play a game called " haunted house" theres gona be 2 teams. 1 team will try to figure out some ideas to scaree the other team. Then you guys can watch a scary movie.

Hope i helped!!(:

What should my graduation party theme be?

Emma

Okay so my school system is weired and 6th grade is still elementary, so we are going into Jr. High School next year. I am having a graduation party with about 15 people but I don't know what to theme it. Our dance the week before we graduate is a loua theme so I don't want to take that idea.It can even be a color theme all ideas are welcome. Thanks!
P.S. It's a pool party. Sorry I forgot to say that!

Answer
Popular pool party themes include:

Caribbean magic, with appropriate music and snacks
Luaus with leis and other Hawaiian décor
Cruise ship themes with life preservers and passport party invitations
Survivor themes with team buffs, grass shelters and competitive challenges
Waterpark themes when the party is actually at a local waterpark, complete with slides, wave pools, and other diversions
The key to a great teen party theme, however, is to remember not to overdo it. Many teens would prefer an understated theme that hints at coordination instead of an outrageous theme that may backfire.

Teen Pool Party Essentials
With or without a theme, there are several basic necessities every pool party requires.
]Food
Because the party will revolve around water activities, it is best to keep food light: sandwiches, hot dogs, fruit, cookies, snow cones, and cool drinks are great options. Silverware should be limited (opt for cupcakes instead of a birthday cake, for example). Glass plates, bottles, or cups should be avoided to prevent accidents that could cut bare feet. Barbeques are great options for pool parties as well, but be sure to offer vegetarian options for conscientious teens.

Activities
Coordinated party games are not usually necessary for teen parties, but having fun pool activities available will encourage teens to entertain themselves. Beach balls and volleyballs are popular choices, as are different floating pool mats and lounges, diving sticks, and water guns. Appropriate calypso, steel drum, and beach-oriented party music (the Beach Boys are a great choice) can add even more fun and may inspire an impromptu limbo contest.
]Accessories
To make the pool party enjoyable for everyone, be sure to have a good supply of necessary pool supplies on hand, including:

Extra towels, including small towels for hair
Sunglasses or visors
Sunscreen, preferably a quick spray-on formula
Swim goggles or masks
Tanning lotion
Adequate shade from trees, umbrellas, or gazebos
Plastic bags or a safe, dry place to store clothes and other non-pool gear
Waterproof cameras to capture every splash
While most teens will bring their own supplies, having extra on hand will ensure that everyone can have a great time even if they forgot something essential. It is also advisable to have an extra swimsuit or two available if necessary.

Safety
What starts out as a fun party can quickly get out of hand with rambunctious teenage energy. To ensure pool safety, be sure the pool area is clean and free from debris that could be stepped on, tripped over, or used inappropriately. Remove unnecessary equipment (hoses, childrenâs toys, etc.) from the area to free up space and eliminate temptations, and before guests dive in, be sure they understand the safety expectations. Horseplay and dangerous stunts should not be tolerated at any time.

]Pool Fun Out of the Water
A teen pool party isnât just about having fun in the water. There are plenty of ways friends can enjoy pool-oriented activities before they dive in, and many of these activities can also be used to space out eating and swimming to prevent potential cramps or injuries.

Decorate inexpensive flip-flops, sandals, or visors
Stage a swimsuit fashion show
Play a game of beach or lawn volleyball or badminton
Arrange a land-based water fight
Enjoy some tanning time
Relax in a whirlpool if available

Hope this helped! Have Fun!

I would be taking the ferry..what is there to do there? I hear you can look at houses and that there is a museum and lots of restuarants. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
There is basicly not much to do there. If you are staying the night i would check out the bar at Sunset Beach, it is the only large bar and scene on Shelter Island. There are a few art gallery's and a small musem or two. Othe rtahn that you can rent a bike and go on a bike ride around the island or goto crescent beach which is across the street from the Sunset Beach Resort and hang in the beach, i think they have volley ball nets up too. The best reason to go to Shelter Island is Commander Cody's Ribs and fried chciken,. I have traveled the entire countyr and have not had ribs and fried chciken as good as he makes it . He is crazy and you may need to call ahead to make sure he is cooking but it is worth the 2+hr trip from NYC. there is no good shopping and only 1 or 2 other restaraunts worth going to(vVne St., French very good) hope that helps.
