We are taking our Daughter to the beach for the 1ST TIME! We are SUPER excited, yet super nervous! She will be 17 months old and she is just everywhere! She never sits still, and she can pitch some tantrums! LOL...She has never been this far away from home (12 hrs) and we are just really nervous! Can you please give me some tips on how to make the trip and the drive easier? Thanks!

Answer
Car DVD player and several of her favorite movies or cartoon DVD's

Take plenty of healthy snacks and drinks for her.

Take beach toys- a pail and shovel, some sand toy molds to make shapes with. Pack a few surprise toys for her during the trip in the car. Check dollar stores for simple little things like a small stuffed animal or something she can play with in the car that won't make a mess. Pull them out every so often and let her have one to keep her entertained and happy on the trip.

Schedule breaks at regular intervals for the potty and just to stretch legs, get a snack etc.. You'd be amazed how pulling off the road for 10 minutes will revive you and keep kids happier in the car!

Lots of sunscreen and one of those little canopy tents to sit in for her or a big umbrella you can all fit under on the beach to protect from the sun.

Another thing with beaches- and I'm assuming it is an ocean beach- be careful about the water. Strong under tows can come in fast and be undetected even from a short wade into the water on the shore. If a little one gets caught by one they can be pulled out far into the water and drown. Be sure someone is holding her hand tight if down by the water and don't let her out of easy grasp for a second.

when is it safe to take a baby to the beach?

I have a five month old baby girl and a 9 year old boy. My son really wants to go to the beach this summer and I'd lke to take him. We live about 20 minutes from the ocean and before the baby came along we'd go about once a week. I'm wondering if my little girl is too fragile to be at the beach. My husband is handicapped so i can't leave the baby home with him.

Answer
I think you should go! We took my daughter at an early age and of course she had a ball.
Here's some ideas that will make it safer for them and less stressful for you.
- lather them up in sunblock 30 minutes before you go (don't forget the top of the ears and head.
- put a sun hat/bonnet on them so the sun rays stay out of their eyes and off of their face
- put a lip balm on their lips so they don't burn
- Bring an umbrella or tent so you can lay them down in the shade
-Bring BABY POWDER! I'm sure you know this, but just in case, sand practically falls off with no problem if you sprinkle baby powder on your skin.
-Bring a few bottles of fresh water for drinking and for flushing out eyes just in case they get sand in their eyes.
- Maybe go later in the evening when its not as hot and the sun isn't so bright. (makes great pictures too!)

You all have fun!
