Im looking for a beach campsite in the Santa Cruz or surrounding areas like Big Sur. We will be camping in a tent and will have 2 young children with us. My only real requirement is hot showers. All of the sites I have found are an average of $60 a night, which I think is ridiculous. Can anyone recommend something that is not so expensive?

Answer
Have you checked out the state park system? I did a quick search and found a number of state beach campgrounds (Manresa, New Brighton, and Sunset for starters) in the Santa Cruz/Watsonville area for $35 a night.

What are good beaches for camping at in CA?

I live in CA and I am planning a camping trip to a beach however I would like to be able to actually setup a tent on the sand and maybe even start a fire pit. I would also like to have a good deal of privacy so probably a beach further away from a city. (I don't like the constant foot traffic, freeway noises and children screaming). What are some good beaches for this?
It would be best if it was in southern CA, however anywhere helps.
The fire is not a big deal, mainly the tenting on the sand closer to the shoreline.

Answer
There is plenty of beach camping in SoCal, but most of it is close to roads and other people. In my experience the sound of the ocean will drown out the traffic noises.

I stayed at Thornhill Broome Beach, and you can set up your tent 10 feet from the water.
